Chapter 2: Five Minutes

Adrian stared at his phone like it had become something dangerous.

The arrogance was gone.

The anger was gone.

Only confusion remained.

I had seen that expression before.

Not on him.

On business executives who realized they had underestimated someone.

“Answer it,” I said.

His eyes moved toward me.

“You’re serious?””

I almost laughed.

After everything that happened, that was the question he chose to ask.

“Yes.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Adrian, don’t let her manipulate you.””

I looked at her.

Interesting.

Even now, she still believed she was in control.

Adrian finally answered.

“Hello?””

The color drained from his face within seconds.

I didn’t need to hear the voice on the other end.

I already knew.

My father didn’t waste words.

He didn’t threaten.

He simply moved.

“Who is it?”” Vanessa asked.

Adrian ignored her.

“Mr. Ellison, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””

A misunderstanding.

That phrase almost made me smile.

Because that was how powerful people often described consequences.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding that cost someone millions.

A mistake that destroyed a reputation.

My father’s voice became sharper through the phone.

Adrian stepped away.

“No, sir. That isn’t necessary.””

A pause.

Then:

“Sir, please listen.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

She finally understood.

This wasn’t a normal argument between husband and wife.

Something much bigger had entered the room.

She walked toward Adrian.

“Who is that?””

He covered the phone.

“Not now.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Adrian.””

Not once had I seen Vanessa ignored.

She was used to being the most important person in every room.

But now she was watching someone else take that position.

Me.

I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water.

My hands were still trembling.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my body was finally processing what had happened.

The home around me suddenly looked different.

The photographs.

The furniture.

The memories.

Everything I built with Adrian.

Everything I believed was real.

I heard his voice behind me.

“Claire.””

I turned.

He was no longer angry.

That was almost worse.

Now he was careful.

“Your father is making a mistake.””

I stared at him.

“My father hasn’t even started.””

Adrian swallowed.

“You don’t understand how serious this is.””

I looked at him.

“Do you?””

The question silenced him.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what he had done.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Claire, let’s be adults.””

I looked at her.

Adults.

That word sounded ridiculous coming from someone standing in another woman’s home wearing her robe.

“You accused me of corporate sabotage.””

She remained silent.

“You helped create evidence against me.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then what happened?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, Vanessa didn’t have a perfect sentence ready.

My father always told me something when I was younger.

“People reveal themselves when they believe they have power over you.””

I finally understood what he meant.

Vanessa wasn’t brave.

She was comfortable.

There was a difference.

She was only confident because she believed Adrian would protect her.

Now she wasn’t sure.

Adrian ended the call.

The room became silent.

I waited.

He looked at me.

“What did you tell him?””

“The truth.””

“You told him everything?””

I looked at the belt still lying on the floor.

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“Claire, you have no idea what you’ve done.””

I walked closer.

“No, Adrian.””

My voice was quiet.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

He looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

The man who had once looked me in the eyes and promised forever couldn’t even look at me now.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, the name on the screen made Vanessa step back.

“Adrian?””

He didn’t answer.

He just stared.

“What’s happening?”” she asked.

Adrian slowly sat down.

The confidence that had filled this room minutes earlier had disappeared.

“My board members are calling.””

I said nothing.

“My investors are calling.””

Still nothing.

Then he looked at me.

“Your father contacted them?””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights glittered against the glass.

Three years ago, I stood in this exact spot wearing a wedding dress, believing I had found the person who would protect my heart.

Tonight, I stood there knowing I had to protect it myself.

Adrian’s voice became smaller.

“Claire…”

I turned.

“Yes?””

He hesitated.

For the first time since I met him, Adrian Mercer looked like a man who knew he had lost something.

“Who exactly is your father?””

I looked at him.

And I gave him the answer he should have discovered before hurting me.

“Robert Ellison.””

His face went completely still.

Because everyone in the business world knew that name.

And everyone knew one other thing.

When Robert Ellison decided someone had crossed a line…

He never stopped halfway.

Adrian’s phone buzzed again.

Then again.

Then again.

Five minutes had passed.

And my husband finally realized the woman he thought was powerless had been the one person standing between him and his own destruction.

But before I could say another word, Vanessa’s phone rang.

She looked down.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Adrian…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

She slowly lifted her eyes.

May you like

“It’s about me.””

And whatever she had just seen on that screen made her hands begin to shake.
