Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Mask

Vanessa’s phone slipped slightly in her hand.

For the first time since I met her, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Adrian noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes moved across the screen again, reading whatever message had appeared.

“Vanessa.””

His voice sharpened.

“What did you do?””

That question changed everything.

Because for months, Adrian had defended her.

He had trusted her.

He had chosen her words over mine.

But now, when she looked scared, his first instinct wasn’t to protect her.

It was to question her.

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s nothing.””

I almost laughed.

Nothing.

That was the same word people used when they wanted to hide a disaster.

“Show him,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

I walked closer.

“No. But you spent months telling my husband what to think. I think he deserves to know what you’ve been hiding.””

Adrian looked between us.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa’s confidence returned for half a second.

“Adrian, she’s trying to distract you.””

“Then show me the phone.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You don’t trust me?””

The question was clever.

Very clever.

She wasn’t answering.

She was changing the subject.

I watched Adrian realize the same thing.

“Vanessa.””

His voice became colder.

“Show me.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was the answer.

Adrian reached for the phone.

She pulled it away.

A mistake.

A very small mistake.

But enough.

Because Adrian had spent his entire career reading people during negotiations.

He knew when someone was hiding something.

“What is on that phone?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re really choosing her side now?””

“No.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m asking a question.””

I stood silently.

Watching.

For the first time, I wasn’t fighting to prove my innocence.

I didn’t need to.

The truth was beginning to expose itself.

Vanessa finally placed the phone on the table.

“Fine.””

Adrian picked it up.

His eyes moved across the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Adrian…”

“What is this?””

His voice echoed through the room.

I stepped closer.

“What did you find?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me.

Because anger was easy to understand.

Shock was different.

Shock meant something had broken inside.

Adrian placed the phone down.

“There are messages between Vanessa and someone from our competitor.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She moved toward him.

“They were asking questions. I was gathering information.””

“Information?””

Adrian stared at her.

“You told me Claire leaked our files.””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“I thought she did.””

“You thought?””

That one word carried more damage than a scream.

Because Adrian finally heard the uncertainty.

The doubt.

The thing he ignored when it came from me.

I walked toward the table.

“Let me guess.””

Both of them looked at me.

“You were investigating the leak.””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“You found out someone inside the company was involved.””

Still silence.

“But instead of finding the real person, you needed someone to blame.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“And that someone was my wife?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice stopped her.

“No more explanations.””

That was the first time I saw Vanessa lose control.

She had built her entire relationship with Adrian around confidence.

Around knowing exactly what to say.

But now she was facing something she couldn’t charm.

Evidence.

I looked at Adrian.

“You never asked why those emails appeared.””

He didn’t answer.

“You never checked the security logs.””

Silence.

“You never spoke to the IT department.””

His expression changed.

Because he knew.

He had accused me without investigating.

He had trusted the person standing beside him instead of the person who shared his life.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

My father.

I answered immediately.

“Dad.””

“Claire.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

That was when I knew things had moved further than I expected.

“Are you safe?””

I glanced at Adrian.

Then at Vanessa.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

A pause.

“I have something you need to hear.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What is it?””

My father never sounded uncertain.

But now there was something different.

Concern.

“Before you married Adrian, I had my team run a background check.””

I froze.

“You did?””

“I respected your decision to live independently, but I wanted to make sure the man entering your life wasn’t using you.””

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

“And?””

My father paused.

“We found something.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What?””

“Claire, Adrian Mercer was not as successful as he wanted people to believe when you met him.””

I looked at Adrian.

He noticed my expression.

“What did he say?””

I ignored him.

“Keep going, Dad.””

“Mercer Dynamics was struggling. Investors were losing confidence. Then, shortly after your relationship became serious, the company received several major opportunities.””

I slowly understood.

My father continued.

“Opportunities that came from connections linked to your family.””

My heart sank.

“Are you saying…”

“I’m saying Adrian may have known exactly who you were before you told him.””

The words hit harder than anything that happened that night.

Because the pain wasn’t about the belt anymore.

It wasn’t about Vanessa.

It was about the possibility that the entire marriage had been built on a lie.

I looked at Adrian.

The man I loved.

The man I defended.

The man I trusted.

And suddenly, I had one question.

A question that terrified me.

“Dad…”

My voice became quiet.

“Did Adrian marry me because he loved me?””

The silence on the phone lasted three seconds.

Then my father answered.

“We need to find out.””

I hung up.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I didn’t see my husband.

I saw a mystery.

And I needed answers.

Because if my father was right…

The biggest betrayal had not happened tonight.

May you like

It had started years ago.

On the day Adrian first said, “I love you.””
