Chapter 9: The Truth Buried For Years
I stood inside the elevator, unable to move.
The doors slowly closed.
But I barely noticed.
My mind was stuck on one sentence.
*Your mother did.*
The elevator reached the lobby.
I walked out without remembering the distance between the elevator and the front doors.
Everything felt unreal.
My mother.
The woman who sang to me when I couldn’t sleep.
The woman who sat beside my hospital bed when I broke my arm as a child.
The woman who told me I was the reason she was happy.
She had been behind this.
Or at least that was what someone wanted me to believe.
And I had learned one thing from my family.
Never trust the first truth you hear.
I drove straight home.
Lily was sitting on the couch watching a movie when I entered.
The moment she saw me, she smiled.
“Daddy.””
That one word reminded me why I was fighting.
Not for revenge.
Not for pride.
For her.
I sat beside her.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She leaned against me.
“Did you find the bad people?””
I looked at her.
“What makes you think there are bad people?””
She shrugged.
“Because good people don’t make children scared.””
I closed my eyes for a moment.
A six-year-old shouldn’t understand that.
She should be worried about toys and cartoons.
Not family betrayal.
I kissed her forehead.
“I’m going to make sure nobody ever scares you again.””
That night, I opened the flash drive.
I didn’t watch it alone.
I called Emma.
She arrived with a laptop and a serious expression.
“We need to be careful.””
I nodded.
“Play it.””
The video started.
My father’s office appeared.
The same recording.
My mother walked in.
But this time, Emma enhanced the audio.
Their conversation became clearer.
My father looked exhausted.
“You went too far.””
My mother crossed her arms.
“You’re the one who started this.””
My heart tightened.
My father continued.
“I wanted Daniel to return.””
My mother laughed.
“You wanted him broken.””
Silence.
Then my father said:
“I never wanted Lily involved.””
My eyes widened.
Emma paused the video.
“Did you hear that?””
I nodded.
My father had not planned it.
But my mother had.
We continued watching.
My mother sat across from him.
“You don’t understand Daniel.””
My father looked angry.
“I understand him better than anyone.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You raised him. I created him.””
That sentence made my blood run cold.
My mother continued.
“He has always been different.””
My father leaned forward.
“What did you do?””
She smiled.
“I prepared him.””
The video glitched.
Then returned.
My father looked furious.
“You used my son?””
My mother’s voice became cold.
“I used what I had.””
The screen went black.
Emma looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I stared at the laptop.
My mother had manipulated everything.
But why?
What was she trying to achieve?
Then the flash drive revealed another file.
A folder.
Created recently.
Inside was a single document.
A scanned page from my grandfather’s records.
At the top was a name.
*Bennett Family Trust Agreement.*
Emma read it quickly.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
She looked shocked.
“You are the primary beneficiary.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She turned the screen.
My grandfather had left control of the family trust to me.
Not my father.
Not Mark.
Me.
The reason my father feared me.
The reason my mother manipulated me.
The key wasn’t just about exposing secrets.
It was about ownership.
My grandfather had known what kind of people my family could become.
He had protected the future from them.
Then another line caught my attention.
*The beneficiary may activate the trust only when evidence of family misconduct is submitted.*
I stared.
“They needed me to find the evidence.””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
I leaned back.
Suddenly everything changed.
My family wasn’t trying to hide the key because it could destroy them.
They were trying to stop me from using it because it could remove their power.
My phone rang.
This time, I recognized the number.
My mother.
I answered.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was shaking.
“We need to talk.””
“No.””
A pause.
“Please.””
I looked at Lily sleeping in the next room.
“You already talked.””
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“You tried to take my daughter.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You made choices.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I did what I had to do.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She started crying.
“I was protecting myself.””
I looked at Emma.
She was listening.
“From who?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Then I heard another voice in the background.
A man.
Older.
Familiar.
My father.
But he wasn’t speaking to my mother.
He was speaking to someone else.
“Did you finish?””
My mother whispered:
“Yes.””
My blood ran cold.
They were together.
After everything.
They were working together.
My mother suddenly realized I heard him.
“Daniel, wait—”
I ended the call.
Because I finally understood.
They wanted me to think they were enemies.
They wanted me chasing shadows.
But the truth was much worse.
My parents had been partners from the beginning.
And they had one final plan.
May you like
To take Lily away.
And destroy me completely.
