Chapter 2: The Promise Of Revenge

I carried Lily out of the mansion without saying another word.

The cold night air hit my face as soon as we stepped outside.

She buried her head against my chest.

“Daddy…”

Her voice was small.

Broken.

“I’m sorry.””

I stopped walking.

I looked down at her.

“Why would you say that?””

She wiped her tears with her tiny hand.

“Because everyone was mad.””

My heart cracked.

“No, sweetheart.””

I touched her hair gently.

“They should be sorry.””

She looked at me.

“But Aunt Victoria said nobody would believe me.””

Those words followed me all the way home.

Because that was the part that hurt the most.

My daughter wasn’t only afraid of what happened.

She was afraid nobody would protect her.

When we arrived home, I cleaned every scratch carefully.

Lily sat on the bathroom counter while I checked each bruise.

Every time she flinched, my anger grew.

Not wild anger.

Not careless anger.

The kind of anger that becomes a plan.

“Daddy?””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

“Are you mad at me?””

I froze.

“No.””

“Are you leaving because of me?””

That question almost destroyed me.

I knelt in front of her.

“Listen to me, Lily.””

She looked into my eyes.

“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””

I held her small hands.

“Nothing you did caused this.””

She nodded slowly.

But I could see she was still scared.

After she fell asleep, I sat alone in the living room.

The house was silent.

My phone sat on the table.

I had hundreds of unanswered messages.

Most were from my family.

My brother.

My mother.

My father.

Victoria.

I ignored them all.

Then one message appeared.

From Victoria.

*You really embarrassed yourself tonight.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*Dad is furious. You should apologize before this gets worse.*

I almost laughed.

Apologize?

For protecting my daughter?

I put the phone down.

Then I opened my laptop.

For years, my family believed I was just the quiet son.

The one who walked away.

The one who refused the family business.

They thought I had nothing.

They were wrong.

Very wrong.

Three years earlier, I had built my own company from nothing.

I kept it private.

No family connections.

No family money.

No Bennett name.

Just my work.

And now I understood why that mattered.

Because my family had spent their entire lives believing power belonged to them.

They forgot someone else could have it too.

The next morning, I walked into my office.

My assistant, Emma, immediately noticed something was wrong.

“Daniel?””

I placed my coat down.

“I need everything we have on Bennett Holdings.””

She looked surprised.

“Your father’s company?””

“Yes.””

“Are you sure?””

I looked out the window.

“Find every contract, every partnership, every connection.””

Emma studied my face.

“What happened?””

I paused.

Then answered.

“They hurt my daughter.””

Her expression changed immediately.

“Understood.””

By noon, the first reports arrived.

And what I saw shocked even me.

Because the dinner party wasn’t just about Victoria.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

My family had been hiding things.

Things involving money.

Deals.

People they had used.

And one name kept appearing.

Victoria Bennett.

I stared at the documents in front of me.

Then my phone rang.

It was my father.

I answered.

“Daniel.””

His voice was cold.

“You made a mistake coming after this family.””

I leaned back.

“No.””

A pause.

“I made a mistake believing this family was worth protecting.””

My father became silent.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Your sister didn’t tell you everything about that night.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Another pause.

Then my father whispered:

“Ask Victoria why Lily was chosen.””

The call ended.

I sat there staring at the phone.

Because suddenly I understood.

What happened to my daughter wasn’t random.

May you like

It was planned.

And someone had a reason for targeting my little girl.
