Chapter 6: The Brother Who Wasn’t Mine
I read the note three times.
Then five.
Then ten.
But the words didn’t change.
*Your brother is not yours.*
My hands felt numb.
I sat on the floor surrounded by pieces of my childhood.
Old toys.
Old pictures.
Old memories that suddenly felt fake.
Mark.
My brother.
The person I grew up with.
The person I defended.
The person who stood at that dinner table and watched my daughter suffer.
I picked up my phone.
I almost called him.
Almost.
Then I remembered his face.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Guilt.
He knew.
The next morning, I went to the Bennett family estate.
Not because I wanted answers.
Because I needed the truth.
Mark was outside near the garden.
The same garden where Lily had been hurt.
When he saw me, his face changed.
“Daniel.””
I walked toward him.
“Tell me.””
He looked away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
I showed him the note.
His expression changed instantly.
For the first time in years, my brother looked afraid.
“Where did you get that?””
I stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
Mark swallowed.
“Dad kept that hidden.””
“Why?””
He looked at the ground.
“Because he never wanted you to know.””
“Know what?””
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“I’m not your brother.””
The world seemed to stop.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Mark looked like he hated himself.
“I found out when I was eighteen.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“It’s true.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I backed away.
“You knew?””
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“You knew my whole life was a lie.””
“I was scared.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You were scared?””
I pointed toward the mansion.
“And Lily?””
Mark looked down.
“I tried to stop them.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I didn’t.””
The honesty hurt more.
“Why?””
Mark looked toward the house.
“Because Dad promised he would destroy me if I went against him.””
I stared.
“Destroy you?””
He nodded.
“Everything I had. Everything I built.””
I shook my head.
“So you let him hurt my daughter to protect yourself?””
Mark had no answer.
That was the answer.
I turned away.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
He spoke quietly.
“There’s more.””
I looked back.
“Of course there is.””
Mark took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t adopt me because he wanted another son.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then why?””
“Because of your mother.””
I waited.
“She had a secret.””
“What secret?””
Mark looked toward the mansion.
“She knew about the key.””
I felt anger rising again.
“Everyone keeps talking about this key.””
Mark nodded.
“Because it contains proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Proof that Bennett Holdings was never built the way everyone thinks.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Mark stepped closer.
“Your grandfather left something behind.””
I remembered the old stories.
My grandfather.
The man who started everything.
The man my father rarely talked about.
“What did he leave?””
Mark looked at me.
“A record.””
“Of?””
“Every illegal deal. Every person your father betrayed. Every secret he buried.””
I looked down at the key in my hand.
“So my father hurt Lily because he thought I had it?””
“Yes.””
“And Victoria?””
“She was trying to find it.””
I clenched my fist.
“My own family.””
Mark looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
For years, I had wanted my brother to stand beside me.
Now I realized he had been standing beside the wrong people.
I walked away.
But before I reached my car, Mark called out.
“Daniel!””
I turned.
His face was pale.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
He whispered:
“Your father knows you found the key.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
Mark looked toward the mansion.
“Because he was the one who put it there.””
I froze.
“Why would he hide it if he wanted it?””
Mark’s voice became barely audible.
“Because he wasn’t hiding it from you.””
A pause.
“He was hiding it from someone else.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Mark looked terrified.
Then he said:
“The person who really planned what happened to Lily.””
And from inside the mansion…
a window curtain moved.

Someone had been watching us.
Someone who already knew I was getting close.
