Chapter 9: The Person Behind Every Lie
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was trying to remember.
The voice from the phone.
The words.
The accusation.
“You really don’t remember what you did, do you?””
The sentence kept repeating in my head.
I sat on the floor beside my bed, surrounded by old photographs, trying to find something I had missed.
Something hidden in plain sight.
For years, I believed my marriage ended because Ryan fell in love with someone else.
A simple betrayal.
A painful but understandable reason.
But now I knew better.
Someone had been moving pieces around.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been waiting.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was one sentence.
*“Check the old storage box in your basement.””*
I stared at the screen.
My first instinct was to ignore it.
But something inside me told me not to.
The basement smelled like dust and old memories.
I turned on the light and walked toward the corner where I kept things I couldn’t throw away.
Old birthday cards.
Family photographs.
Documents from years ago.
The box was exactly where the message said it would be.
I had no idea who moved it.
Or how they knew.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were things from my marriage.
Our first apartment lease.
Our wedding invitations.
Letters Ryan wrote me when we were dating.
Then I saw something strange.
A small black notebook.
I didn’t recognize it.
I opened the cover.
The first page made my blood run cold.
My handwriting.
My name.
But I had never seen it before.
The entries were dated months before Ryan left.
I read the first one.
*“I don’t know how much longer I can pretend everything is okay.””*
My breath caught.
The next page.
*“Ryan doesn’t know the truth yet.””*
The next.
*“If anything happens to me, Linda promised she would protect him.””*
I dropped the notebook.
“What is this?””
My voice echoed in the basement.
Because I knew that handwriting.
It was mine.
But I didn’t remember writing those words.
I brought the notebook upstairs.
Ryan was awake.
The moment he saw my face, he stood as quickly as he could from his wheelchair.
“What happened?””
I placed the notebook on the table.
“Read it.””
He opened it.
His expression changed with every page.
“What is this?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked at me.
“Sarah…”
“I’m telling you the truth.””
He closed the notebook.
“I believe you.””
Those words surprised me.
After everything.
After all the damage between us.
He believed me.
“Why?””
Ryan looked down.
“Because I spent eleven years knowing you.””
A painful silence followed.
Then he whispered:
“And I spent months pretending I didn’t.””
I looked away.
That hurt.
Because it was true.
Marcus arrived an hour later.
He studied the notebook carefully.
“This changes everything.””
“What does it mean?”” Ryan asked.
Marcus flipped through the pages.
“I think someone wanted Sarah to believe she was responsible for something.””
“Something like what?”” I asked.
He looked serious.
“Possibly the accident.””
I shook my head.
“But I wasn’t even there.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You were.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
He pointed to the notebook.
“These entries suggest you knew something was happening.””
I grabbed the notebook.
“No.””
I looked at the words.
“I don’t remember.””
Marcus nodded.
“That’s the important part.””
“What do you mean?””
“Trauma can affect memory.””
Ryan looked at him.
“You think someone manipulated her?””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Until Ryan suddenly stood still.
His face changed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Your sister.””
I froze.
“What about her?””
Ryan looked terrified.
“She was the one who knew everything.””
I frowned.
“My sister Emily?””
He nodded slowly.
“Sarah, she was the person who introduced Jessica to me.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“I never told you.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t want to make things worse.””
I stared at him.
“My own sister introduced you to the woman you cheated with?””
Ryan nodded.
“I thought it was a coincidence.””
Marcus closed the notebook.
“Maybe it wasn’t.””
We found Emily that evening.
She didn’t answer her door.
She didn’t answer her phone.
But her car was outside.
Marcus knocked.
Nothing.
Then he noticed something.
The door wasn’t locked.
We entered slowly.
The apartment was empty.
Not abandoned.
Empty.
Like someone had left in a hurry.
Drawers were open.
Clothes were missing.
A suitcase was gone.
“She knew we were coming,” Marcus said.
Ryan looked around.
Then stopped.
“What is that?””
On the kitchen counter was a photograph.
The four of us.
Me.
Ryan.
Emily.
Jessica.
Taken at a dinner years ago.
Before everything collapsed.
On the back was a handwritten message.
I turned it over.
My hands went cold.
*“You always wondered why your husband chose her.””*
Below it:
*“He didn’t.””*
Ryan looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared on my phone.
From Emily.
*“Come alone if you want the truth.””*
My heart started pounding.
Because I knew.
The final secret was waiting.
May you like
And this time…
I was going to hear it from the person who started everything.
