Chapter 2: The Secret In The Wreckage

I didn’t close the door.

I should have.

Every part of me told me to.

Ryan had already hurt me once.

There was no reason to stand there and listen to another explanation, another excuse, another carefully prepared story designed to make me feel sorry for him.

But something in his voice stopped me.

It wasn’t manipulation.

It wasn’t anger.

It was fear.

“Who was in the car with you?”” I asked.

Ryan looked at his mother.

That tiny movement told me everything.

Linda knew.

She had known before she came to my house.

“You knew,” I said.

Her face tightened.

“Sarah—”

“No.””

I stepped outside.

The cold rain hit my hair and shoulders.

“You don’t get to show up at my door with suitcases and secrets and expect me to just accept it.””

Ryan looked miserable.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I laughed quietly.

“How else was I supposed to find out? After I became your nurse?””

His eyes closed.

That reaction hurt more than anger would have.

Because guilt meant he knew exactly what he had done.

“Tell me,” I said.

Ryan swallowed.

“Jessica wasn’t driving.””

I waited.

The rain fell between us.

“Then who was?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that silence felt worse.

Linda finally whispered:

“Her brother.””

I frowned.

“Her brother?””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“His name is Ethan.””

I felt confused.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Ryan looked away.

“The police found him at the scene.””

“And?””

His hands tightened.

“He ran.””

The words landed differently.

“What?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Ethan left the car before emergency services arrived.””

I stared at him.

“You’re saying Jessica’s brother was there and abandoned you?””

Ryan nodded.

“He panicked.””

I almost smiled.

The irony was impossible to ignore.

The woman my husband left me for had a family member who left him behind when he needed someone most.

But then another thought came.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

Linda looked down.

That was enough.

“You didn’t want me to know.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You wanted me to believe Jessica simply left because caring for you was difficult.””

Ryan looked ashamed.

“She did leave.””

“But there’s more.””

He didn’t deny it.

I stepped back inside the house but didn’t invite them in.

I couldn’t.

Not yet.

I stood by the doorway while Ryan explained.

The accident happened after midnight.

Jessica had called him, saying she needed help.

She claimed she was scared because Ethan had been drinking and was acting strangely.

Ryan drove to pick her up.

That was what he told himself, anyway.

That he was helping someone.

That he was being kind.

But when he arrived, Ethan was already there.

And according to Ryan, the argument started before they even left.

“Jessica wanted me to drive them home,” Ryan said.

I crossed my arms.

“And you agreed.””

“Yes.””

“Of course you did.””

He flinched.

Because he knew what I meant.

Ryan had spent months choosing Jessica.

Even after leaving me, he was still choosing her problems over the woman who had stood beside him for eleven years.

“What happened next?””

Ryan stared at the ground.

“Ethan was angry.””

“About what?””

“He said things.””

“What things?””

Ryan hesitated.

Then Linda spoke.

“About money.””

I looked at her.

“What money?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That was the moment I knew there was another layer.

A bigger one.

“Ryan.””

His face changed.

“I found out Jessica had been lying to me.””

My chest tightened.

“About what?””

He looked at me.

“She wasn’t living alone.””

The world seemed strangely quiet.

“What?””

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“Sarah, Jessica’s apartment wasn’t just hers.””

I waited.

“She had been sharing it with Ethan.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you telling me?””

Ryan looked devastated.

“Because I think I was being used.””

The words should have made me happy.

They didn’t.

Because all I could think about was how many times I had warned him.

How many times I had asked him if he was sure.

How many times he told me I was just jealous.

“You left me for someone you barely knew.””

“I know.””

“You destroyed our marriage.””

“I know.””

“You hurt me.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

I looked away.

Because hearing him admit it didn’t repair anything.

It only proved he understood the damage after it was too late.

Ryan’s phone suddenly rang.

All three of us froze.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?”” Linda asked.

Ryan didn’t answer.

He just stared.

I noticed his hand shaking.

“Ryan?””

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

A name appeared on the screen.

Jessica.

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After leaving him.

After refusing to care for him.

She was calling.

Ryan answered.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Where did you get this number?””

A pause.

Then Ryan’s eyes lifted toward me.

“Sarah…”

I felt a chill.

“What?””

He put the phone on speaker.

Jessica’s voice came through.

Broken.

Panicked.

“Ryan, you need to listen to me.””

Ryan stared ahead.

“Why are you calling?””

Her breathing shook.

“Because I know what Ethan did.””

The rain outside seemed to disappear.

Everyone went silent.

Jessica continued.

“And if Sarah finds out the truth, she’s going to hate you forever.””

My stomach tightened.

Ryan looked at me.

And I knew.

Whatever happened that night was not just about an accident.

It was about a secret someone had been trying to bury.

May you like

Then Jessica whispered one sentence that made Ryan’s face go completely pale.

“I know who was really responsible for the crash.””
