Chapter 8: The Betrayal Beneath The Betrayal
The name sat between us like a weapon.
I couldn’t process it.
Neither could Ryan.
“No,” he said.
Linda looked at him sadly.
“Yes.””
Ryan shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“You need to stop saying that.””
Her voice was tired.
“Too many impossible things have already happened.””
I looked between them.
“Tell us everything.””
Linda hesitated.
Then she walked to the kitchen table and sat down.
For the first time since I met her, she looked old.
Not powerful.
Not judgmental.
Just exhausted.
“I knew Ryan was having an affair before you did.””
Ryan looked away.
“I figured.””
Linda continued.
“I hated Jessica.””
I almost smiled.
At least someone was honest.
“But not because she took my son.””
She looked at me.
“Because she was dangerous.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then why did you let him leave me?””
Linda’s eyes filled.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could control everything.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty surprised me.
“I made that mistake.””
Linda explained that she discovered Jessica’s real intentions months before Ryan left.
Jessica had debts.
Large ones.
She had been looking for someone wealthy.
Someone who could save her.
And Ryan was the perfect target.
“He wasn’t just in love,” Linda said.
“He was being manipulated.””
Ryan looked angry.
“Mom, don’t make me a victim.””
Linda looked at him.
“You were still responsible for your choices.””
The room went quiet.
Because even Linda admitted it.
Ryan had been manipulated.
But he had still betrayed me.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
Linda looked down.
“I confronted Jessica.””
“And?””
“She denied everything.””
Linda sighed.
“She threatened me.””
“With what?””
“She said if I exposed her, she would tell Ryan things about me.””
Ryan frowned.
“What things?””
Linda looked at him.
“That I knew about your father’s business problems.””
Ryan went silent.
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
Linda looked at me.
“Your father-in-law didn’t lose everything naturally.””
A chill went through me.
“What?””
“Years ago, someone betrayed him.””
Ryan stared.
“Who?””
Linda didn’t answer.
Because she was looking at me.
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
She whispered:
“I’m saying Jessica wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
I felt like I was falling into another version of reality.
Every time I thought I understood what happened, another door opened.
Another secret waited behind it.
Ryan looked at me.
“Sarah?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what she means.””
Linda stood.
“I believe you.””
The sentence shocked me.
“Why?””
“Because the person who framed you wants you to doubt yourself.””
She walked toward a cabinet.
Then pulled out a file.
“I kept this because I knew someday the truth would come out.””
She placed it on the table.
Inside was a report.
A police report.
From years earlier.
I read the name.
My heart stopped.
My name.
My information.
But not my signature.
“What is this?””
Linda looked at me.
“Someone has been using your identity for years.””
I looked at Ryan.
“What?””
He looked equally confused.
Marcus picked up the document.
“This is bigger than the accident.””
Linda nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Someone has been setting Sarah up for a long time.””
The room went silent.
Then Ryan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice I recognized.
My blood turned cold.
Because I had heard it before.
Many times.
The voice said:
“Sarah, you need to stop searching.””
I grabbed the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You really don’t remember what you did, do you?””
My heart raced.
“Who are you?””
The person laughed quietly.
And then said:
“I’m the reason your marriage fell apart.””
The call ended.
Ryan looked at me.
“Sarah…”
I stared at the phone.
Because I knew that voice.
I had known it for years.

And the terrifying truth was…
the person who destroyed my marriage had been standing beside me the entire time.
