Chapter 8: The Witness Who Came Back
Finding the missing witness changed everything.
His name was Daniel Brooks.
Three years earlier, he was the person who reported the financial crimes.
The man who told investigators that Emily had access to the accounts.
The man whose testimony helped convince everyone she was guilty.
But now we discovered something impossible.
Daniel Brooks had lied.
The next morning, we located him.
He lived in a quiet neighborhood two hours outside the city.
A simple house.
No luxury.
No signs of the powerful witness everyone remembered.
When he opened the door and saw us, his face went pale.
“You found me.””
My father stepped forward.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at the badge.
Then at me.
“Is this about Emily?””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew this day would come.””
Inside the house, Daniel sat at the kitchen table.
His hands shook as he poured coffee.
“I didn’t want anyone hurt.””
I looked at him.
“But Emily was.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Why did you lie?””
Daniel stared at the cup.
“Because Victor told me to.””
The answer came too easily.
Like he had repeated it in his head for years.
“How did you know Victor?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He owned the company where I worked.””
“Owned?””
“Not officially.””
There was that word again.
Not officially.
Victor’s entire world existed in the shadows.
“He controlled everything,” Daniel said.
“People. Money. Information.””
My father leaned forward.
“Tell us what happened.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The money wasn’t stolen by Emily.””
We already knew that.
But hearing him say it mattered.
“Richard was involved?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard worked for Victor.””
I felt anger rise.
“He wasn’t just a boyfriend.””
“No.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“He was an employee.””
The room became silent.
Emily had not fallen for a criminal boyfriend.
She had been chosen by one.
“What was Victor’s plan?”” I asked.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Create a person everyone would believe.””
“And Emily?””
“The perfect target.””
“Why?””
“Because she had no criminal history.””
“Exactly.””
Daniel continued.
“People would believe she made one terrible mistake.””
My hands tightened.
“And Richard?””
Daniel gave a sad smile.
“Richard was the bait.””
The words hit hard.
Bait.
That was all Emily had been.
A person used to make the story believable.
Then Daniel reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need proof.””
Inside was a flash drive.
My father looked at him.
“What is this?””
“Everything.””
Daniel looked at the drive.
“Victor’s original instructions.””
My heart raced.
“The entire plan?””
Daniel nodded.
“Every message.””
“Every payment.””
“Every conversation.””
For three years, the truth had been hidden inside a tiny piece of plastic.
We had spent months searching for answers.
And Daniel had been carrying them the entire time.
“Why didn’t you come forward?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Victor found my family.””
The room went quiet.
“He threatened my wife.””
“Your children.””
“I thought staying silent protected them.””
My father looked at him.
“And now?””
Daniel looked toward the drive.
“Now I know silence protected him.””
That evening, the team analyzed the files.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Messages between Victor and Richard.
Payments.
Instructions.
A detailed plan.
And one message that destroyed everything.
Victor had written:
“Once the woman accepts responsibility, she becomes the story. Nobody questions the story.””
Nobody questioned the story.
Until now.
But just as we prepared to release the evidence, another alert appeared.
Richard had requested an emergency meeting.
Not with his lawyer.
Not with investigators.
With Emily.
The reason?
He wanted to confess everything.
But there was one condition.
He wanted the meeting held without cameras.
Without recordings.
Without witnesses.
I looked at the request.
Something felt wrong.
Richard had spent three years lying.
Why would he suddenly tell the truth?
Then my phone rang.
A blocked number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Victor Hale.
“You’re getting close.””
I didn’t respond.
He continued.
“But you made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“You forgot Emily is still inside my game.””
The call ended.
And seconds later, the prison alarm sounded.
An emergency alert flashed across my screen.
INMATE EMILY CARTER — IMMEDIATE SECURITY INCIDENT.
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because Victor had found the only thing he could still use against us.
Emily herself.
