Chapter 7: The Attack On The Truth
The morning my father was supposed to sign the request to reopen Emily Carter’s case, he never made it to his office.
At 7:42 a.m., I received a call from the courthouse security department.
“Officer Hayes, you need to come immediately.””
The voice on the other end was tense.
“What happened?””
A pause.
“Judge Hayes was involved in an incident.””
My heart dropped.
I drove faster than I should have.
When I arrived, the courthouse entrance was surrounded by officers.
My father was standing near the steps.
Alive.
Standing.
But holding a piece of paper in his hand.
I ran toward him.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.
Not for himself.
For what had almost happened.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded slowly.
“I’m fine.””
“What happened?””
He handed me the paper.
I unfolded it.
Three words were written in black ink.
LET IT GO.
My jaw tightened.
“Victor.””
My father looked around.
“He wanted me to know he could reach me.””
The message wasn’t a threat.
It was a warning.
A reminder.
Victor Hale had spent years controlling people by making them believe they were powerless.
But now he knew we were close.
Too close.
That afternoon, we moved everything to a secure location.
The investigation team gathered all the evidence.
The recordings.
The missing documents.
The visitor logs.
James Walker’s testimony.
But something was still missing.
Proof connecting Victor directly to the crime.
Without that, we could expose Richard’s betrayal.
But we couldn’t put Victor behind bars.
“We need the original financial records,” James said.
He sat across from us, looking exhausted.
“The ones from before Emily confessed.””
My father looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Richard didn’t create the accounts.””
James opened a folder.
“Victor did.””
Rachel leaned forward.
“You knew about this?””
James looked ashamed.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“You let an innocent woman go to prison based on suspicion?””
James looked down.
“I was afraid.””
Nobody spoke.
Because fear explained his actions.
But it didn’t excuse them.
My father finally said:
“Where are those records?””
James hesitated.
“Richard has them.””
I frowned.
“Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Why would he keep evidence that could destroy him?””
James gave a bitter smile.
“Because Richard always believed he was smarter than everyone else.””
That sounded exactly like him.
A person who survives by manipulation eventually starts believing they are untouchable.
The plan was simple.
Find Richard’s hidden files.
Recover the evidence.
Expose the truth.
But getting those files wouldn’t be easy.
Richard had been transferred to a different facility after the investigation began.
He knew something was happening.
And he knew we were getting closer.
When I arrived at the prison the next day, Richard was already waiting in the interview room.
He looked different.
The confidence was gone.
“Officer Hayes.””
I sat across from him.
“Richard.””
He smiled slightly.
“You’re investigating me.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
He leaned back.
“Because of Emily?””
“Because of the truth.””
He laughed quietly.
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
Richard shook his head.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
I watched him carefully.
“Then explain it.””
His expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something real.
Fear.
“Some things are bigger than you.””
“Who?””
He looked away.
“I can’t.””
“You mean you won’t.””
Richard stayed silent.
I placed a folder on the table.
Inside were copies of the recordings.
His own words.
His own confession.
“You said Emily sacrificed nine years for you.””
He looked at the folder.
“You recorded that?””
“Yes.””
His face lost color.
“You can’t use that.””
“Why?””
Because he knew.
He knew exactly why.
The recording wasn’t just embarrassing.
It proved he had lied.
It proved he knew Emily was protecting him.
But before I could continue, Richard leaned closer.
“You think you’re saving her.””
“I am.””
“No.””
His voice became quiet.
“You’re putting her in danger.””
I studied him.
“Is that supposed to scare me?””
“It’s supposed to warn you.””
“From Victor?””
Richard froze.
That reaction confirmed everything.
“You know him.””
His silence was enough.
“Richard, you need to tell me everything.””
He looked at the floor.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Because he’ll kill me.””
The room went silent.
For the first time, Richard wasn’t acting.
He was terrified.
But then he looked up.
And something changed.
The old Richard returned.
The manipulator.
The survivor.
“If you want the truth,” he said, “bring Emily here.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she deserves to hear it from me.””
I didn’t trust him.
Not for a second.
But something about his expression bothered me.
He wasn’t planning something against Emily.
He looked like a man running out of time.
Before I left, he said one more thing.
“Officer Hayes.””
I stopped.
“Don’t trust James.””
I turned around.
“Why?””
Richard stared at me.
“Because he’s not telling you everything.””
That night, I reviewed every piece of evidence again.
And then I found something strange.
A hidden message inside the original case file.
A note written by the first investigator.
Only one sentence.
“Check the person who discovered the money.””
I stared at the words.
Because the person who discovered the missing money was not Richard.
Not Emily.
Not Victor.
It was the witness who started the entire case.
A witness who had disappeared immediately after Emily’s conviction.
A witness everyone thought had left the country.
But the records showed something different.
He never left.
May you like
He had been living under a new identity.
And his real name was connected to Victor Hale.
