Chapter 6: The Witness Who Disappeared

The name on the visitor record made my hands go cold.

James Walker.

Richard’s own attorney.

For three years, everyone believed James was helping Richard survive the trial.

But the records showed something different.

James continued visiting Richard even after the case ended.

Not once.

Not twice.

Fourteen times.

Each visit was hidden.

Each one marked as confidential.

I looked at the dates.

The first visit happened one month after Emily entered prison.

The last one happened only three weeks before Richard came to see her.

“What were they discussing?”” my father asked.

“I don’t know.””

“But we’re going to find out.””

We requested the visitation logs.

Within hours, we received them.

Most of the conversations were normal.

Legal advice.

Financial issues.

Family matters.

Then we found the last recorded visit.

The notes were incomplete.

Only one sentence had been entered by the officer monitoring the room.

“Subject appeared distressed after visitor mentioned previous agreement.””

Previous agreement.

Those words stayed in my mind.

An agreement between Richard and his lawyer.

An agreement that happened before Emily took the blame.

I returned to the prison and requested to speak with James.

He refused.

That confirmed my suspicion.

People avoid conversations when they’re protecting themselves.

Not when they’re innocent.

Later that day, I found him waiting outside the courthouse.

“You wanted to talk.””

James looked exhausted.

Different from before.

Less like a powerful attorney.

More like a man who had been running for too long.

“You knew,” I said.

He looked away.

“Knew what?””

“You knew Emily was innocent.””

Silence.

That silence was an answer.

I stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you stop it?””

James rubbed his forehead.

“Because I thought I could control it.””

“Control what?””

“The damage.””

I stared at him.

“Start talking.””

He looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

“Richard wasn’t the mastermind.””

I already knew that.

But hearing it confirmed was different.

“Who was?””

James hesitated.

“A man named Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is he?””

James looked at me.

“Someone who never appears on paper.””

“Explain.””

“Richard owed him money.””

“How much?””

“More than Richard could ever repay.””

James continued.

“Victor gave Richard a choice.””

My stomach tightened.

“What choice?””

James swallowed.

“Find someone to take the fall.””

I felt anger rising.

“And Richard chose Emily.””

James nodded.

“He didn’t choose her because she was involved.””

“Then why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because she loved him.””

The words were painful because they were true.

Richard didn’t pick Emily because she was weak.

He picked her because she was loyal.

Because she would protect him.

Because she believed his tears.

I thought about Emily sitting alone in that prison cell.

Nine years.

Gone.

For someone who saw her love as a tool.

“Why didn’t you tell the court?””

James looked ashamed.

“Because Victor threatened my family.””

I watched him carefully.

“Your family?””

“My daughter.””

His voice cracked.

“He knew where she went to school.””

That changed something.

James wasn’t just a greedy lawyer.

He was another person trapped.

But that didn’t erase what happened.

“You still helped him.””

“I know.””

“Emily lost nine years.””

“I know.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I have thought about that every day.””

I believed him.

But guilt didn’t give someone back their life.

“Where is Victor now?””

James looked toward the courthouse.

“He’s closer than you think.””

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he whispered:

“He knows.””

“Who?””

James looked directly at me.

“Victor.””

The call stopped.

Then another notification appeared.

A photo message.

James opened it.

His hands began shaking.

He turned the phone toward me.

The picture showed a young woman leaving a building.

James’ daughter.

Taken that morning.

Underneath the photo were four words.

“Stay away from Emily.””

James closed his eyes.

For the first time, I saw the fear clearly.

Not the fear of a man protecting himself.

The fear of a father.

But Victor had made one mistake.

He thought fear was enough to control everyone forever.

He thought Emily was still alone.

He thought nobody would fight for her.

He was wrong.

Because now we had the recordings.

The missing evidence.

The hidden agreement.

And one person who was finally ready to tell the truth.

James opened his eyes.

“Officer Hayes.””

“Yes?””

“If we do this…”

He looked at the photo of his daughter.

“There’s no going back.””

I looked toward the courthouse steps.

Toward the place where Emily’s life had changed forever.

Then I answered:

“Good.””

Because for three years, Emily had been trapped behind glass.

Now it was time for the people who put her there to feel what it was like.

But neither of us knew that Victor Hale had already planned his next move.

And his first target wasn’t Emily.

May you like

It was the one person who could reopen the case.

My father.
