Chapter 9: The Man Beneath The House
“Son, you finally came home.””
I knew that voice.
Not because it sounded like my father.
Because it was my father.
The same low rasp he used when waking me for school.
The same calm tone he used from the bleachers when I struck out.
The same voice that whispered, “I’m proud of you,” at my wedding.
My knees nearly gave out.
“No.””
Sarah raised the gun.
Claire pulled Emma behind her.
The darkness below us seemed to breathe.
Then the voice came again.
“Still stubborn.””
My hands went numb.
I lifted my phone from the floor.
The flashlight beam trembled across the hallway.
A steel staircase descended beneath the building.
At the bottom, something moved.
“Ryan,” Sarah whispered.
“Don’t go down there.””
I barely heard her.
“You died.””
A soft laugh came from below.
“Yes.””
“No.””
“I did.””
I took one step toward the stairs.
Sarah grabbed my jacket.
“I said don’t.””
I pulled free.
“You expect me to stand here?””
“I expect you to survive.””
Claire whispered, “He wants you close.””
“Why?””
Neither woman answered.
That frightened me more than Michael’s voice.
I shouted into the darkness.
“Come up.””
Silence.
Then:
“I can’t.””
Sarah’s jaw tightened.
“Because he’s chained.””
I looked at her.
“You kept my father chained under this house?””
“He is not your father.””
“He raised me.””
“He used you.””
Michael laughed again.
“You always were dramatic, Sarah.””
She aimed toward the staircase.
“Shut up.””
He ignored her.
“Ryan, ask Claire why she never killed me.””
Claire went pale.
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you?””
She stared into the dark.
“I tried.””
A metal chain rattled below.
“Poor Claire,” Michael said.
“Always trying.””
Emma began crying.
I turned immediately.
“Take her outside.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“What?””
“The exits may be watched.””
“By who?””
“Thomas.””
Of course.
I almost laughed.
One monster chained under us.
Another somewhere outside.
Perfect.
My phone vibrated.
One bar of service.
A message from Daniel.
I’M OUTSIDE. TWO VEHICLES APPROACHING FROM NORTH ROAD.
I typed back.
THOMAS?
His reply came.
DON’T KNOW.
I looked at Sarah.
“We have company.””
Her expression hardened.
“How many?””
“Two vehicles.””
Claire hugged Emma tighter.
“Thomas.””
Michael’s voice floated upward.
“No.””
We all froze.
Sarah stepped closer to the stairs.
“What did you say?””
“Thomas doesn’t travel with two cars anymore.””
I stared down.
“How would you know?””
“He visited me.””
Claire went rigid.
“When?””
“Last week.””
Sarah swore.
Claire whispered, “That’s impossible.””
Michael chuckled.
“You people really love that word.””
I moved to the top step.
Sarah blocked me again.
“Ryan.””
“I need answers.””
“You need distance.””
“That has gotten me lied to for eleven years.””
She flinched.
Good.
I descended.
One step.
Then another.
The air grew colder.
The concrete walls were lined with pipes.
At the bottom stood a reinforced steel cage.
Inside sat an old man in a chair.
Thin.
White-haired.
One ankle chained to the floor.
He lifted his face.
My heart stopped.
Jack Carter.
Older.
Emaciated.
But unmistakable.
The scar above his eyebrow from when he taught me to skate.
The crooked little finger he broke repairing our garage.
The mole beneath his left ear.
Alive.
I gripped the railing.
“You.””
He smiled.
“Hello, Ryan.””
My throat closed.
“I watched you die.””
“Yes.””
“I buried you.””
“You buried a body.””
The room tilted.
“Whose?””
“A man approximately my age.””
“You switched bodies.””
“With help.””
“From who?””
His smile disappeared.
“Thomas.””
I stared at him.
“You and Thomas worked together after everything?””
“Enemies cooperate when survival requires it.””
Sarah came down behind me.
Gun raised.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Michael looked at her.
“Still pretending you aren’t my daughter?””
Sarah’s face tightened.
“I am your daughter biologically. That is all.””
My stomach turned.
So that much was true.
Michael looked at me.
“And you.””
“What?””
“Not mine.””
I almost laughed.
“Good.””
His expression softened strangely.
“You really loved me.””
I hated that he said it like a discovery.
“I thought you were my father.””
“For most of your life, I thought I could become him.””
My anger exploded.
“You kidnapped children. You tortured Claire. You lied to me every day.””
His face hardened.
“You know fragments.””
“Then fill them in.””
Sarah snapped, “Ryan.””
“No.””
I looked directly at Michael.
“You tell me now.””
He leaned back.
“Margaret found my financial records in 1986.””
“My biological mother.””
“Yes.””
“She wanted to expose you.””
“She wanted leverage.””
“You got her pregnant.””
“Yes.””
The admission was casual.
I hated him more for that.
“Then she gave me to Evelyn.””
“She ran with you.””
“Because she was scared.””
“Because Thomas convinced her I would kill you.””
“Would you?””
Michael stared at me.
Long enough.
That was the answer.
I continued.
“Evelyn raised me with you.””
“Eventually.””
“You tracked her down.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she run again?””
His gaze dropped.
“Because I promised you would live if she stayed.””
Sarah whispered, “And she believed him.””
Michael ignored her.
“She became inconvenient.””
I felt cold.
“What did you do to her?””
He looked at me.
“Nothing.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I did not kill Evelyn.””
“Then who did?””
“Thomas.””
A voice above us shouted.
“Wrong.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel.
He came down the stairs with his gun raised.
Behind him stood Anna.
And behind Anna—
Thomas Mercer.
Older than Michael.
Tall.
Silver hair.
A pistol pressed against Anna’s back.
Claire gasped.
“Dad.””
Thomas’s eyes moved to her.
For the first time, the hard expression on his face broke.
“Claire.””
Daniel aimed at him.
“Let her go.””
Thomas ignored him.
He stared at Claire like a starving man looking at food.
“My girl.””
Claire backed away.
“Don’t call me that.””
Thomas flinched.
Michael laughed from the cage.
“Touching.””
Thomas’s face turned murderous.
“You should already be dead.””
Michael smiled.
“You tried.””
Daniel moved his gun toward Thomas.
“Put yours down.””
Thomas tightened his grip on Anna.
“You first.””
Anna whispered, “Daniel, don’t.””
Claire looked at her.
Fifteen years of separation passed between them in one glance.
“You’re alive,” Anna said.
Claire started crying.
“So are you.””
Thomas snapped, “Enough.””
Emma screamed, “Mommy!””
Thomas looked at her.
His granddaughter.
His face collapsed.
Claire pulled Emma behind her.
“Don’t.””
Thomas whispered, “She looks like you.””
“You don’t get to look at her.””
Michael leaned forward.
“This is what you wanted, Thomas. Family reunion.””
Thomas turned on him.
“You destroyed my family.””
Michael laughed.
“No. You sold them.””
Silence.
Daniel stared at his father.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas said nothing.
Michael continued.
“Tell them.””
“Shut up.””
“Tell Daniel who gave Claire to me.””
Claire went completely still.
Daniel whispered, “Dad?””
Thomas’s grip loosened on Anna.
Claire looked at him.
“No.””
Michael’s voice became almost gentle.
“Thomas handed Claire over in exchange for protection.””
“Liar.””
Claire’s face twisted.
“You said Michael took me.””
Thomas shook his head.
“He would have killed all of us.””
“So you gave him me?””
“I thought I could get you back.””
“Fifteen years?””
Thomas started crying.
It was the ugliest thing I had seen all night.
“Claire—”
She slapped him.
The sound cracked through the basement.
Thomas stumbled.
Anna moved instantly.
Daniel grabbed her and pulled her clear.
Sarah aimed at Thomas.
Claire stood inches from him.
“You left me there.””
Thomas whispered, “I was afraid.””
Claire laughed through tears.
“I was twenty-four.””
Emma began sobbing.
I stepped toward her.
Then Michael said:
“Ryan.””
I turned.
He was holding something.
A small metal key.
He had somehow worked it from beneath the chair.
He inserted it into the ankle cuff.
Click.
Sarah raised the gun.
“Don’t move.””
Michael stood.
Thomas aimed at him.
Daniel aimed at Thomas.
Sarah aimed at Michael.
Claire held Emma.
Anna stood frozen between them.
And I realized suddenly that every adult in the room was still trapped in the same old story.
Who betrayed whom.
Who lied first.
Who deserved revenge.
Emma was crying.
Lily was somewhere outside.
And none of it mattered if these people kept repeating the same violence.
I stepped between the guns.
“Put them down.””
Sarah stared at me.
“Move.””
“No.””
“Ryan.””
“No more.””
Thomas barked, “Get out of the way.””
I looked at him.
“You gave away your daughter.””
He flinched.
I turned to Michael.
“You stole my life.””
His expression hardened.
Then to Sarah.
“You’re trying to protect Emma. Fine. Then stop making her watch this.””
Sarah looked at the child.
Her gun lowered first.
Daniel followed.
Then Claire took one step toward the stairs.
Thomas lifted his weapon.
“Claire, don’t.””
She froze.
Michael smiled.
There it was.
The thing men like them always revealed eventually.
Not love.
Ownership.
Thomas aimed at Claire.
“If you leave, I lose everything.””
Daniel raised his gun again.
“Dad.””
Thomas’s finger tightened.
I moved.
The gun went off.
Claire screamed.
Emma screamed.
For one horrifying second, I felt nothing.
Then Thomas fell.
Not Claire.
Thomas.
A dark stain spread across his chest.
Behind him, Anna stood shaking.
The pistol she had taken from Daniel’s waistband smoked in her hand.
Thomas looked at her.
Shock.
Then recognition.
“Anna…”
She whispered:
“My name is Anna Voss.””
Then she lowered the gun.
Thomas collapsed.
And behind us came the sound of metal striking concrete.
Michael was gone.
The cage door stood open.
So did the emergency exit at the far end of the basement.
On the floor beside it lay a single piece of paper.
I picked it up.
A map.
My house circled in red.
And beside it, in Michael’s handwriting:

EVELYN NEVER HID THE ARCHIVE FROM YOU.
SHE HID IT INSIDE YOU.
