Chapter 3: Sarah’s Secret
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The photograph shook in my hand.
Sarah.
The woman smiling behind Claire in the picture.
The woman I remembered as quiet, polite, almost painfully reserved.
The woman who had stood beside my wife on our wedding day.
The woman Daniel had just said was Emma’s mother.
And the woman who had supposedly told Claire that Emma was mine.
I looked at Daniel.
“You’re lying.””
He didn’t flinch.
“I’m not.””
“You expect me to believe I had a child with Sarah and somehow forgot about it?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
I stepped toward him.
“Then explain it.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Ryan, don’t.””
I pulled away.
“No. You’ve had eleven years to decide what I was allowed to know. You’re done deciding.””
Emma stood on the stairs clutching Lily’s hand.
Her eyes moved between the adults like she understood enough to be afraid.
I forced my voice lower.
“Lily, sweetheart, take Emma upstairs.””
Lily looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“Can she sleep in my room?””
The question nearly broke something inside me.
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Emma didn’t move.
Her gaze stayed fixed on me.
“Daddy comes too?””
My throat tightened.
“In a minute.””
She hesitated.
Then Lily tugged gently on her hand.
“Come on. I have the bunny night-light.””
The girls disappeared upstairs.
I waited until I heard Lily’s bedroom door close.
Then I turned back to Claire.
“What happened with Sarah?””
Claire wrapped her arms around herself.
“It wasn’t what Daniel thinks.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“I know exactly what happened.””
“You know what I told you.””
“And that was already bad enough.””
I slammed the photograph onto the foyer table.
“Enough.””
Both of them stopped.
I pointed at Claire.
“You first.””
She stared at the floor.
“Sarah was my best friend.””
“I know that much.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“She was the only person who knew where I came from. The only person outside my family who knew my real name.””
“Caroline Mercer.””
She nodded.
“Sarah helped me disappear.””
Daniel leaned against the doorframe.
“She helped Claire steal another woman’s identity.””
Claire looked at him sharply.
“You weren’t there.””
“I cleaned up the mess afterward.””
I turned to Claire.
“What identity?””
She closed her eyes.
“Claire Bennett existed.””
A chill passed through me.
“What does that mean?””
“She was real.””
“Who?””
“A girl I knew in college.””
I stared at her.
“You took someone else’s name?””
“She died.””
Daniel added, “And our father had the paperwork altered.””
Claire’s eyes flashed.
“You keep saying it like I planned it.””
“Didn’t you?””
“No!””
Her shout echoed through the foyer.
Then she remembered the children upstairs and lowered her voice.
“I was twenty-two. Dad had already put me in the hospital twice.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
Claire looked at me.
“He controlled everything. Bank accounts. Phones.
Where we went. Who we spoke to. He worked private security for men with enough money to make problems disappear.””
“You told me your father sold insurance.””
“I lied.””
“Clearly.””
She flinched.
I hated myself for feeling satisfaction.
But only for a second.
“Sarah found out what he was doing to me. She helped me leave.””
“And then?””
“Dad found us.””
Daniel pushed away from the doorway.
“He always found us.””
Claire shot him a warning look.
I pointed between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“That our father didn’t just abuse us.””
Claire whispered, “Daniel.””
“He sold information.””
“Stop.””
“He blackmailed clients.””
“Daniel.””
“He made people disappear when the price was right.””
Claire turned pale.
I stared at him.
“You’re saying your father was some kind of criminal fixer?””
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“That’s the clean version.””
I thought about every holiday Claire had claimed her parents were traveling.
Every time she avoided discussing childhood.
Every time she dismissed questions about old friends.
There had always been blank spaces in her life.
I had mistaken silence for privacy.
“Fine,” I said.
“Your father was dangerous. You changed your name. Sarah helped you. What does any of that have to do with Emma?””
Claire looked toward the stairs.
“Sarah met him too.””
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“And he became obsessed with keeping her close.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because she knew things.””
“What things?””
Claire swallowed.
“Names. Dates. Accounts. Places.””
Daniel said, “She kept copies.””
I looked between them.
“Of what?””
“Dad’s records.””
Claire wiped her face.
“Sarah believed if she had enough evidence, he couldn’t hurt us.””
“But?””
Claire laughed softly.
“But people like my father don’t get scared when you collect evidence.””
Daniel finished for her.
“They get interested in where you hid it.””
The wind pressed against the front door.
I suddenly became aware that it was still standing open.
I shut it.
Locked it.
Then turned around.
“Now tell me about the baby.””
Claire’s face changed.
“That part is complicated.””
“No. It’s simple. Sarah got pregnant.
You said she told you the baby was mine. Why?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Because Sarah and Ryan were together.””
I looked at him.
“No, we weren’t.””
“Yes, you were.””
“I think I’d remember.””
“Maybe you don’t.””
Something in his tone stopped me.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
Claire whispered, “Daniel, don’t.””
He ignored her.
“Summer of 2020. Boston.””
I frowned.
“I was in Boston for work.””
“For six weeks.””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“So was Sarah.””
I felt my pulse in my neck.
“She lived there.””
“Exactly.””
Claire sat down on the bottom stair.
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded once.
“Sarah called me.””
“When?””
“After you came home.””
“What did she say?””
Claire pressed her palms together.
“She said something happened.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She said you spent one night together.””
“No.””
“She said you were drunk.””
“No.””
“She said you called her because we had fought.””
My memory surfaced.
A hotel room.
Rain against glass.
Three whiskeys after a client dinner.
A brutal phone argument with Claire because she had accused me of caring more about work than our marriage.
Then nothing.
I remembered waking up with a headache.
My clothes on the floor.
A water glass beside the bed.
No Sarah.
No woman.
Nobody.
I had assumed I came back alone.
My stomach twisted.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire looked at me.
“I asked her the same thing.””
I shook my head.
“She never said anything to me.””
“She was ashamed.””
“Or she was lying.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Maybe.””
I looked at him.
“That’s your answer?””
“No. My answer is that Sarah told Claire the baby was yours. That doesn’t mean she was right.””
I turned toward Claire.
“You put my name on the birth certificate based on that?””
Her eyes widened.
“I didn’t.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I did not put your name on Emma’s birth certificate.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s not what you told me.””
“I lied.””
He stared at her.
“You what?””
She stood.
“The certificate was already completed when I arrived.””
My skin went cold.
“By who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Sarah?””
“She was unconscious.””
“What happened to her?””
Claire looked away.
I grabbed the banister.
“What happened to Sarah?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“She gave birth at a private clinic outside Hartford.””
“Why?””
“Because she was hiding.””
“From your father?””
Claire nodded.
“I got there six hours after Emma was born.””
“And Sarah?””
“She had lost a lot of blood.””
My anger weakened.
“Did she die?””
Claire looked at me.
“No.””
I exhaled.
“Then where is she?””
Silence.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You told me she died.””
Claire’s face crumpled.
“I thought she did.””
“What does that mean?””
“When I came back into the room, she was gone.””
I stared.
“Gone?””
“The bed was empty. Her bag was gone. The nurse said Sarah had checked herself out.””
“After nearly bleeding to death?””
“I knew it made no sense.””
Daniel’s voice turned cold.
“So you took the baby.””
Claire flinched.
“I took Emma because someone had to.””
“And hid her?””
“I panicked.””
“For five years?””
“I thought Sarah would come back.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“So you kept my possible daughter hidden from me while waiting for her mother to return?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know if she was yours.””
“You didn’t think I deserved to know?””
“Dad knew about the baby.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Claire wiped her cheek.
“Two days after Emma was born, someone left an envelope under my hotel door.””
“What was inside?””
“A photograph of Emma.””
My stomach sank.
“And a note.””
Daniel went rigid.
“What did it say?””
Claire looked at him.
Then at me.
“It said, ‘Bring back what belongs to me, or Ryan learns what Sarah did.’”
I frowned.
“What Sarah did?””
“I didn’t understand.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You never told me that.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t trust you.””
He laughed once.
“Fair.””
I stepped closer.
“Do you still have the note?””
Claire hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She looked toward the hidden room upstairs.
“Behind the mattress.””
I turned immediately.
Claire caught my arm.
“There’s more.””
I faced her.
“What?””
Her lips trembled.
“Sarah left something too.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
My heartbeat accelerated.
“For who?””
Claire looked directly at me.
“You.””
I stared at her.
“You had a letter from Sarah addressed to me for five years?””
“Yes.””
“And you never gave it to me?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what it said?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“Of what you’d do after reading it.””
I started upstairs.
She followed.
Daniel came behind us.
We reached the hidden passage.
Lily’s bedroom door remained shut.
Good.
I entered the narrow room again.
The mattress looked even smaller now.
More obscene.
Claire knelt and pulled one corner away from the wall.
Behind it was a loose floorboard.
She lifted it.
Inside was a plastic document pouch.
My hands felt numb as she handed it to me.
I opened it.
There was the birth certificate.
Emma Rose Miller.
Mother: Sarah Miller.
Father: Ryan Carter.
My name.
My date of birth.
Even my Social Security number.
I looked up.
“How did she have this?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel muttered, “Someone had access.””
Under the certificate was the note Claire had described.
Five handwritten words.
Bring back what belongs to me.
Then another line.
Or Ryan learns the truth.
No signature.
Beneath that was an envelope.
RYAN.
Sarah’s handwriting.
I recognized it from birthday cards.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Claire turned away.
Daniel watched silently.
Inside was one page.
Ryan,
If Claire gives you this, then I failed.
Emma may have your name, but before you decide what that means, you need to know what happened in Boston.
You did not betray Claire.
I did something unforgivable to protect someone I loved.
My breath stopped.
I read the next line.
Then again.
Because the first time, my mind refused to understand it.
There had never been an affair.
There had never been a drunken night together.
Sarah had lied.
But Emma was still connected to me.
Just not in the way anyone had claimed.
My eyes moved to the final paragraph.
And suddenly I knew why Claire had hidden the letter.
Sarah had written:
Emma is not your daughter.
May you like
She is your sister.
And if Thomas Mercer ever learns she survived, he will come for her.
