Chapter 2: The Man At The Door
The doorbell rang at 2:17 in the morning.
Once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
Slow.
Patient.
Claire squeezed my wrist so hard her nails dug into my skin.
“Do not answer it.””
I stared at her.
“Who is outside?””
She shook her head.
“Ryan, please.””
The doorbell rang again.
Emma crawled backward until her shoulders hit the wall.
Her entire body began trembling.
That reaction told me more than Claire did.
I crouched beside her.
“Emma, do you know who that is?””
Claire snapped, “Don’t ask her.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because she’s terrified.””
“So am I.””
“Ryan.””
“No. We’re done with secrets.””
Downstairs, someone knocked.
Three heavy blows.
Lily covered her ears.
“Daddy, make it stop.””
That decided it.
Whatever was happening between Claire and me could wait ten seconds.
My daughters—
I stopped myself.
My daughter.
Lily was my daughter.
Emma was…
I couldn’t even finish the thought.
I lifted Lily into my arms.
“Stay with Mommy.””
Claire flinched at the word.
I noticed.
“Ryan, don’t go downstairs.””
“Someone is pounding on our door at two in the morning.””
“I know.””
“Exactly.””
I handed Lily to her.
Then I looked at Emma.
She was still gripping the front of my shirt.
“I’ll come back.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
The word came out sharp.
Desperate.
“No, Daddy.””
My stomach clenched.
Claire covered her mouth again.
I gently loosened Emma’s fingers.
“I’m not leaving the house.””
She whispered, “He’ll take me.””
That froze me.
“Who?””
She shook her head violently.
“Who will take you?””
“Ryan,” Claire said.
I stood.
“This is your last chance before I call the police.””
“You can’t call them.””
I stared at her.
“Excuse me?””
“You can’t.””
“That child just said somebody is here to take her.””
“If you call the police, everything gets worse.””
“For who?””
She didn’t answer.
“For you?””
Claire’s face hardened.
“For Emma.””
That was the first thing she had said all night that sounded certain.
I studied her.
“Why?””
Another knock.
This time a man’s voice came through the front door.
“Claire.””
My blood went cold.
He knew her name.
“Claire, I know you’re in there.””
She went completely still.
I looked at her.
“Who is that?””
She whispered, “Daniel.””
“Daniel who?””
Her eyes lifted to mine.
“My brother.””
I blinked.
“Your brother?””
I had been married to Claire for eleven years.
In eleven years, I had never met a brother named Daniel.
As far as I knew, Claire had been an only child.
Her parents, Richard and Elaine Bennett, had both died before Lily was born.
I had seen family albums.
School pictures.
Holiday cards.
There had never been a brother.
“You don’t have a brother.””
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“That’s what my parents told everyone.””
Another knock.
“Claire!””
Emma whimpered.
Claire rushed toward the hidden door.
“Everyone stays here.””
I blocked her.
“You are not going anywhere until you explain.””
“Then he’s going to break the door down.””
As if summoned by her words, something slammed against the front entrance.
Lily screamed.
I moved immediately.
“Stay here.””
“Ryan!””
I was already running.
Through the narrow passage.
Into the hallway.
Down the stairs.
The house that had felt safe for six years now seemed filled with places I had never truly seen.
I reached the foyer.
The porch lights were on.
Through the frosted glass beside the door, I could see the outline of a man.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Hands shoved into the pockets of a dark jacket.
Another car sat behind mine in the driveway.
Black SUV.
No front plate.
I grabbed my phone.
911 was one touch away.
“Ryan!””
Claire hurried down the stairs.
I turned.
“I told you to stay upstairs.””
“I need to talk to him.””
“You need to stay away from the door.””
“Daniel won’t hurt me.””
“Emma thinks he’ll take her.””
Claire stopped.
“So you do know what this is about.””
She looked toward the door.
“Unfortunately.””
Daniel knocked again.
“Claire, open the door.””
I stepped toward the side window and pulled back the curtain.
The man outside looked around forty.
Dark hair.
Unshaven.
A scar ran from his left eyebrow toward his temple.
He looked exhausted rather than violent.
But exhausted men could still be dangerous.
I called through the door.
“Who are you?””
Silence.
Then, “You must be Ryan.””
My grip tightened on the phone.
“And you must be Daniel.””
Claire whispered behind me, “Don’t tell him anything.””
Daniel heard her.
“Claire, stop this.””
“Go away.””
“I can’t.””
“Yes, you can.””
“I gave you enough time.””
Her expression collapsed.
I turned.
“Enough time for what?””
Daniel answered through the door.
“To tell him.””
Claire shut her eyes.
“Tell me what?””
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“She still doing that?””
I moved closer to the door.
“Doing what?””
“Controlling the story.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
“Ryan,” he called, “ask your wife why your daughter has been hidden in that house for four years.””
The air left my lungs.
Claire whispered, “He’s lying.””
Daniel continued.
“Ask her why Emma’s birth certificate has your name on it.””
I turned slowly.
Claire was crying.
Not denying it.
Just crying.
“Is that true?””
“Ryan…”
“Is my name on her birth certificate?””
She looked away.
I felt something inside me tear.
The family photos.
The anniversaries.
The Christmas mornings.
The whispered conversations in bed.
The trust I had treated like gravity.
Permanent.
Invisible.
Always there.
Gone.
I unlocked the door.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“No!””
I pulled it open but kept the chain engaged.
Cold night air rushed inside.
Daniel stood on the porch.
Up close, he looked worse.
Bloodshot eyes.
Mud on his shoes.
Dark circles beneath them.
His gaze moved from me to Claire.
“You finally opened the door.””
I held up my phone.
“One wrong move and I call the police.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Do that.””
Claire stepped forward.
“No.””
He looked past me.
“You still scared of them?””
“Go to hell.””
“Already been there.””
I stared between them.
“This conversation ends now unless somebody tells me what’s happening.””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“You really don’t know?””
“No.””
His anger faded.
Something worse replaced it.
Pity.
“I’m sorry.””
“Don’t.””
“I mean it.””
“Start talking.””
Daniel glanced at Claire.
She shook her head.
He ignored her.
“Five years ago, Claire called me from a hospital in Connecticut.””
Claire went pale.
“She had just given birth.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“She was alone.””
“No.””
“She told me the baby couldn’t come home.””
“Stop,” Claire whispered.
“She said if anyone knew the truth, they would take the child.””
I looked at my wife.
“Five years ago?””
Claire’s lips trembled.
We had been married six years at that point.
Trying for a baby.
Or at least I thought we were.
She had disappeared for six weeks that year.
Her mother was supposedly dying.
Claire had stayed with her.
I had believed every word.
“Your mother was sick.””
Claire started crying harder.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Our mother was already dead.””
I stared at him.
“No. Elaine died four years ago.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Ryan.””
My throat tightened.
“She died nine years ago.””
Silence.
I actually laughed.
It sounded insane.
“That’s impossible. I went to her funeral.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“You went to somebody’s funeral.””
I turned toward my wife.
Her face answered before her mouth did.
“What did you do?””
Claire whispered, “I was trying to protect us.””
“From what?””
Daniel leaned toward the opening.
“From the Bennetts.””
I almost yelled.
“You are Bennetts.””
“No.””
Claire snapped, “Stop.””
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“Tell him your real name.””
She said nothing.
“Claire.””
“Stop.””
“Tell him.””
I looked at her.
“What real name?””
Her shoulders collapsed.
“Ryan…”
“What is your real name?””
For several seconds, the only sound was the wind moving through the porch trees.
Then Claire whispered, “Claire Bennett wasn’t the name I was born with.””
I felt numb.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Jesus.””
I stared at her.
“Who did I marry?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped away from the door.
“Who are you?””
Claire wiped her face.
“My name was Caroline Mercer.””
“Was?””
“I changed it.””
“Why?””
“Because I had to.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“She means because our father made her.””
Claire whirled toward him.
“He would have killed me.””
“And hiding Emma was better?””
“I kept her alive.””
“You locked her behind a wall.””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“I hid her.””
“For four years?””
Daniel’s silence told me yes.
I felt nauseated.
I looked toward the stairs.
“Where did Emma live before that room?””
Claire stared at me.
“Ryan…”
“Answer me.””
“She moved.””
“With who?””
“With me.””
“When?””
“Whenever you traveled.””
The answer sliced through me.
My consulting job took me away several times a year.
Sometimes for days.
Sometimes for a week.
I pictured Claire in this house.
Lily asleep upstairs.
Me calling from hotel rooms.
Claire smiling into the phone.
Telling me she missed me.
While another child lived hidden somewhere I never saw.
“You brought her here when I was gone?””
“At first.””
“At first?””
“Then it became too dangerous to move her.””
“So you built a room inside the wall.””
Claire nodded.
My hand went to my mouth.
“Who built it?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Our father.””
Claire spun toward him.
“You don’t know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
“He’s dead.””
Daniel looked at her with something close to hatred.
“No, Claire.””
Everything stopped.
She stared at him.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Claire’s face emptied.
“That’s impossible.””
“He’s alive.””
“No.””
“He contacted me three weeks ago.””
“No.””
“He knows about Emma.””
Claire staggered back.
I caught her before she hit the table.
She ripped herself away.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“Where is he?””
Daniel glanced at the dark street.
“I don’t know.””
“You said he contacted you.””
“He called.””
“What did he say?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the stairs.
“He said he wanted his granddaughter back.””
Claire made a sound that barely seemed human.
Then we heard a tiny creak above us.
I looked up.
Emma stood halfway down the staircase.
Lily beside her.
Both girls holding hands.
Claire rushed toward them.
“Emma, go back upstairs.””
Emma didn’t move.
She was staring at Daniel.
Daniel stared back.
His face crumpled.
“God,” he whispered.
“You look just like her.””
I stepped between them.
“Like who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Ryan, there’s something else you need to know.””
Claire shouted, “No!””
But Emma spoke first.
“My mommy.””
I looked down at her.
“What about your mommy?””
She pointed at a framed photo on the foyer table.
A picture of Claire and me from our wedding.
Except she wasn’t pointing at Claire.
She was pointing behind us.
At the edge of the photograph.
A bridesmaid I had almost forgotten.
Claire’s childhood friend.
A quiet woman named Sarah who had disappeared from our lives shortly after the wedding.
Emma whispered, “That’s my mommy.””
My skin turned to ice.
I lifted the frame.
Sarah was smiling at the camera.
Daniel’s voice came from behind me.
“Emma isn’t Claire’s daughter.””
I turned.
Claire looked like she might faint.
Daniel’s next words landed harder than anything that had come before.
“She’s Sarah’s.””
I stared at the photograph.
Then at Emma.
Then at my wife.
“If Sarah is her mother…”
I could barely force the words out.
“Why is my name on Emma’s birth certificate?””
Claire began sobbing.
Daniel answered for her.
“Because five years ago, Sarah was pregnant.””
May you like
He paused.
“And she told Claire the baby was yours.””
