Chapter 9: The Last Lie Jason Told
The message from Jason stayed on my screen for hours.
Not because I was afraid of him.
Because I knew what it meant.
He wasn’t trying to fix anything.
He wasn’t trying to rebuild a relationship with Emily.
He was trying to control the story.
And people who are desperate to control the story usually have something to hide.
Emily sat across from me at the kitchen table.
She kept looking at her phone.
“He knows something.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“What if it’s something terrible?””
I looked at her.
“Emily, whatever happened eighteen years ago, it doesn’t change one thing.””
“What?””
“You were loved.””
Her eyes filled.
“But what if there’s more?””
“There probably is.””
She looked surprised.
“You’re not scared?””
I thought about that.
Of course I was scared.
Not for myself.
For her.
Because every new piece of information was another piece of the childhood she thought she understood being taken apart.
“I’m scared you’ll get hurt again.””
She looked down.
“I think I already was.””
That was the hardest thing to hear.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
The next morning, my attorney arranged another meeting.
This time, Jason agreed to come.
But he didn’t come alone.
Rachel came with him.
The moment she entered the room, she looked at me.
Not with anger.
With shame.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were the first words she said.
I nodded.
“Sit down.””
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Jason placed a folder on the table.
“You want the truth?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
He pushed it forward.
“Then you should know everything.””
Emily reached for the folder.
But Rachel stopped her.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I need to say it.””
The room became quiet.
She looked at Emily.
“I was afraid.””
Emily frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
Rachel took a breath.
“After the test results came back, Jason left.””
Emily looked at Jason.
He looked away.
Rachel continued.
“I thought my life was over.””
She looked at me.
“Then Mark came into our lives.””
I stayed silent.
“You didn’t know this, Emily, but Mark was not just helping me.””
Her voice broke.
“He was the reason I survived that year.””
Emily looked at me.
I shook my head.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
She wiped her tears.
“She needs to know.””
Then she looked back at Emily.
“When you were a baby, there were medical bills. Rent. Everything.””
She pointed toward me.
“Mark paid for things without asking for anything.””
Emily’s eyes filled.
Rachel continued.
“He never asked me to marry him because of you. He never used your situation to get closer to me.””
She took a breath.
“He loved you before anyone promised him anything.””
The room was silent.
Jason finally spoke.
“And I was the one who walked away.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time, he didn’t look angry.
He looked tired.
“I was twenty-eight.””
Nobody responded.
“I thought being a father meant having my blood in your veins.””
He looked at Emily.
“I was wrong.””
Emily stared at him.
“Then why did you come back?””
Jason closed his eyes.
“Because I saw what I lost.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
He admitted it.
“It isn’t.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I saw your graduation announcement online.””
Emily froze.
“Online?””
Jason nodded.
“I saw your university. Your achievements.””
He swallowed.
“And then I searched your mother’s name.””
Rachel looked away.
“I found out about Mark.””
My expression hardened.
“What about me?””
Jason looked embarrassed.
“I found out you had built a successful company.””
Emily whispered:
“So you saw his money.””
Jason didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt her.
But it was honest.
“I told myself I wanted a relationship with you.””
He looked at Emily.
“And maybe part of me did.””
“Part of you?””
Jason nodded.
“But another part of me saw a chance to have the life I abandoned.””
Emily looked away.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I waited for you.””
Jason closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t know what it felt like watching other kids with their dads.””
Jason had no response.
“You don’t know what it felt like when I won awards and looked at the door hoping you would walk in.””
She paused.
“You don’t know because you weren’t there.””
That sentence broke something in the room.
Jason lowered his head.
Then Rachel spoke.
“There’s one more thing.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at the folder.
“The hospital records weren’t the only thing hidden.””
She reached inside.
She pulled out another document.
Emily stared.
“What is that?””
Rachel looked at her.
“A letter Jason wrote the day he left.””
Jason immediately stood.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“For once, she deserves the whole truth.””
She handed it to Emily.
Emily opened it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
I watched her face change.
“What does it say?””
She didn’t answer.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“He wrote that he hoped someone else would raise me.””
Jason looked devastated.
“Emily—”
She looked up.
“Is that true?””
Jason couldn’t lie.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Emily folded the paper.
And something changed.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Acceptance.
“I spent my whole life trying to prove I was worth staying for.””
She looked at him.
“But you left before I could even try.””
Jason began crying.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“You were.””
Then she turned toward me.
And I knew.
The daughter I thought I lost had finally found her way back.
But there was still one thing left.
The inheritance.
The documents.
The future.
And the decision only she could make.
Because the next morning, my attorney called.
May you like
He told me Emily had made a request.
A request that shocked everyone.
