Chapter 8: The Choice Rachel Made

I read Rachel’s letter at midnight.

I didn’t want to.

Part of me wanted to leave the past buried.

Some wounds survive because we stop touching them.

But Rachel had already opened that door.

And after eighteen years, I deserved to know why.

The letter was handwritten.

The paper was old.

The first line made my chest tighten.

*Mark, if you are reading this, then the truth finally came out.*

I stopped.

I almost put it down.

But I kept going.

*I know you will wonder why I kept this from Emily. I know you will wonder why I let you believe you were only helping raise another man’s child.*

My hands tightened.

Another man’s child.

That was exactly how I had felt.

Until I remembered the little girl who called me Daddy.

The letter continued.

*When Emily was born, Jason changed.*

I kept reading.

*Before the test results, he was excited. He talked about being a father. But when he learned the truth, everything changed.*

I looked away.

Because I already knew that part.

*Jason wanted to leave immediately. He said he couldn’t raise a child who wasn’t biologically his.*

My jaw tightened.

Then came the sentence I never expected.

*But you were the only person who didn’t ask whether Emily was yours.*

I stopped breathing for a moment.

The memory came back.

The hospital.

The tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

Rachel crying.

Me standing beside her.

I remembered holding Emily for the first time.

I remembered looking down at her tiny fingers.

I remembered saying:

“She doesn’t need a perfect father. She just needs someone who stays.””

I had forgotten those words.

Rachel hadn’t.

The letter continued.

*That was the moment I knew you were different.*

A tear landed on the page.

*You knew the truth before anyone else, Mark. I told you everything. I told you Jason might leave. I told you Emily might never know the difference.*

I swallowed.

Because I remembered.

I remembered Rachel asking me a question that changed my life.

*“If you stay, will you still love her knowing she isn’t yours?””*

And my answer had been immediate.

Yes.

The letter continued.

*You never asked for recognition. You never asked for a reward. You just stayed.*

I closed my eyes.

For years, I thought I had been the forgotten father.

But Rachel had known.

She had seen everything.

The final pages explained what happened afterward.

Jason came back years later.

Not because he suddenly understood fatherhood.

Because he saw what he had lost.

A successful daughter.

A comfortable life.

A family he could benefit from.

Then I reached the last paragraph.

And everything changed.

*Mark, there is something else you need to know.*

I read slowly.

*The inheritance was never created because you wanted to punish Emily. It was created because you were afraid.*

I frowned.

Afraid?

The next sentence answered it.

*You were afraid that one day someone would convince her that blood mattered more than love.*

I stared at the page.

Because Rachel was right.

That fear had always existed.

Even when Emily was little.

Even when she called me Dad.

A part of me worried that one day she would look at me and realize I wasn’t her biological father.

And that was exactly what happened.

The difference was…

She came back.

A knock interrupted my thoughts.

I looked up.

Emily stood in the doorway.

“You’re still awake.””

I folded the letter.

“Yeah.””

She noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

Then handed it to her.

She read quietly.

Every few seconds, her expression changed.

When she finished, she looked at me.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

“She knew everything.””

Emily sat down beside me.

“I feel like my whole life was a lie.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“But it was.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“The lie was that blood was the most important thing.””

She was quiet.

“The truth is that love was there the entire time.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“But you came back.””

She looked at me.

“I almost didn’t.””

That honesty surprised me.

“What changed?””

She looked down.

“After Jason left the graduation ceremony, I sat alone.””

She took a breath.

“I watched other families taking pictures.””

I listened.

“And I realized something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The person I wanted beside me wasn’t the person who gave me a name.””

A tear fell.

“It was the person who gave me everything else.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for years, I had wanted those words.

But hearing them now came with sadness too.

Then Emily’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She just turned the phone toward me.

Jason.

But this time, he wasn’t calling to apologize.

A message appeared beneath his name.

*I know about the trust. If Emily doesn’t convince Mark to change it, I’ll reveal what really happened the night she was born.*

Emily looked terrified.

I stared at the message.

Because Jason wasn’t finished.

He had one more secret.

May you like

And this time, it wasn’t about money.

It was about the night everything began.
