Chapter 6: The Truth He Buried

I spent the entire night awake.

Not because I believed Jason.

Because I knew him.

People like Jason rarely revealed the truth out of honesty.

They revealed it when the truth could benefit them.

The next morning, Emily came downstairs carrying two cups of coffee.

She looked like she hadn’t slept either.

“You heard from the lawyer?””

I nodded.

She placed the coffee on the table.

“What does he mean?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know yet.””

“But Jason knows something.””

“Maybe.””

She frowned.

“You don’t believe him.””

“No.””

“Why?””

I looked at the old family photos on the wall.

“Because Jason has spent eighteen years choosing himself.””

Emily became quiet.

Then she asked:

“What if he really does know something?””

That was the question I feared.

Not because I was afraid of Jason.

Because I was afraid of what it could do to Emily.

“I’ll find out.””

She nodded.

“Can I come with you?””

I studied her face.

The girl who once pushed me away was now asking to stand beside me.

“Yes.””

The meeting happened at a small law office downtown.

Jason was already there.

He looked different from graduation day.

Less confident.

Less polished.

Almost nervous.

When he saw Emily, he smiled.

“There she is.””

She didn’t smile back.

“Why are we here?””

Jason looked at me.

Then at the lawyer.

“I think everyone deserves the truth.””

I almost shook my head.

The man who avoided responsibility his entire life suddenly wanted truth.

“Then tell it.””

Jason sat down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he pulled out an envelope.

Emily stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Something your mother and I kept from you.””

My daughter froze.

“My mother?””

Jason nodded.

“This isn’t just about me.””

He looked at me.

“It’s about Mark too.””

I leaned forward.

“Stop talking around it.””

Jason opened the envelope.

Inside were old documents.

Medical records.

Hospital papers.

Emily looked confused.

“What am I looking at?””

Jason took a breath.

“When you were born, there was a mistake.””

The room went silent.

“What kind of mistake?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“The hospital mixed up information during a records transfer.””

Emily stared at him.

“Are you saying I’m not your daughter?””

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Emily’s face went pale.

“No.””

I reached toward her.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“Tell me.””

Jason looked down.

“You are my daughter.””

She exhaled.

“But?””

Jason swallowed.

“But there was another man.””

The words felt like they changed the air.

Emily sat completely still.

“What man?””

Jason looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen from him.

Fear.

“He was the reason I left.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Jason looked away.

“I found out Rachel had been keeping something from me.””

Emily whispered:

“What did she keep?””

Jason pushed the documents across the table.

“I discovered that the man listed in these records was not me.””

Emily looked down.

Then slowly looked up.

“Who was it?””

Jason’s eyes moved toward me.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“No.””

Jason said nothing.

Emily followed his gaze.

Her face changed.

“Mark?””

Nobody spoke.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Then Jason whispered:

“Your biological father was never the man you thought.””

Emily stared at me.

I couldn’t move.

Because the impossible thought I had buried for years suddenly came back.

A conversation from eighteen years ago.

A secret Rachel begged me never to repeat.

A truth I had protected because I believed it was better for Emily.

But now it was standing in front of us.

And Jason had just opened the door.

Emily’s voice trembled.

“Mark…”

I looked at her.

And before I could answer, Jason placed one final document on the table.

“This proves everything.””

Emily reached for it.

Then stopped.

May you like

Because written across the top were words that would change the way she saw her entire life.
