Chapter 9: The Family Member Behind Her
“My sister?””
I could barely get the words out.
My lawyer, Thomas, was silent for a moment.
“Yes.””
“Which one?””
“Your older sister, Lauren.””
I leaned back in the chair.
Lauren.
My own sister.
The woman who had hugged Lily at Christmas.
The woman who brought Noah birthday gifts.
The woman who had looked me in the eye and said Claire was “so patient” with the children.
“That can’t be right.””
“I thought you’d say that.””
Thomas continued carefully.
“Lauren gave Claire information about your schedule, your finances, and your parenting arrangements.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of information?””
“When you traveled for work. When you were likely to come home late. How much time you spent with Lily. Even details about your previous marriage.””
I stared at the desk.
“Why?””
“That’s what we’re trying to establish.””
Then Thomas said something that made me sit up.
“She also provided a written statement saying she had personally witnessed you screaming at Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“When?””
“According to her statement, six months ago.””
“That never happened.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because she gave a second statement after seeing the evidence from your house.””
I frowned.
“She changed her story?””
“She admitted she wasn't there.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why would she lie?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“She says Claire pressured her.””
I almost shook my head.
“No. Lauren doesn't scare easily.””
“She wasn't only pressured.””
“What else?””
Thomas paused.
“She was promised money.””
Silence.
“How much?””
“She says Claire offered her twenty thousand dollars.””
I stared at the wall.
Twenty thousand.
For lying about me.
For helping build a case against my daughter.
For turning my own family against me.
“What was Claire going to get?””
Thomas answered immediately.
“Full control of the house and primary custody.””
I felt sick.
“And Lauren?””
“She was promised a share of the property after the sale.””
I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.
I called Lauren.
She answered on the third ring.
“Mark?””
Her voice sounded nervous.
“Did Claire offer you money?””
Silence.
“Lauren?””
“I can explain.””
“Did she?””
“Yes.””
My chest hurt.
“How long?””
“Please let me talk.””
“How long have you been helping her?””
“I didn't know what she was really doing.””
“You gave her my schedule.””
“I thought she needed help.””
“You told a lawyer I was abusing Lily.””
“I didn't say that exactly.””
“You signed the statement.””
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were scared?””
She started crying.
“Claire said if I didn't help, I'd lose everything.””
“What did that mean?””
“She knew about the money.””
“What money?””
Lauren hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The inheritance from Dad.””
I froze.
“My father’s estate was settled years ago.””
“Not all of it.””
I sat back down.
“What are you talking about?””
Lauren explained.
There was one investment account my father had established before he died, but I had never touched it. I had assumed it had been divided years ago.
“Claire found the paperwork,” Lauren said.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
“She knew the account was eventually meant to benefit Lily.””
My hands went numb.
“That wasn't public.””
“I know.””
“How did Claire find it?””
Lauren started crying.
“I showed her.””
I closed my eyes.
All those years of trusting her.
All the family dinners.
All the stories.
All the times I had left my children around people I believed loved them.
“What did you expect from Claire?””
“She said she would give me part of it.””
“You knew she was hurting Lily.””
“I knew she was strict.””
“Strict?””
My voice cracked.
“She locked a five-year-old in a basement.””
Lauren started sobbing.
“I didn't know.””
“You knew enough.””
There was a long silence.
Then Lauren said something I would never forget.
“Mark, Claire told me Lily would be better off without you.””
I stood.
“Why?””
“She said you were too attached to her.””
My jaw tightened.
“That doesn't even make sense.””
“I know that now.””
“No. You knew it then.””
She cried harder.
“I made a terrible mistake.””
“You made several.””
I ended the call.
For a long time, I just sat there.
Then Thomas spoke.
“Mark.””
“Yes?””
“There's one more thing.””
I looked up.
“Lauren turned over additional evidence.””
“What kind?””
“Bank transfers.””
I frowned.
“From Claire?””
“Yes.””
“To whom?””
He slid a document across the desk.
There were several payments.
One to Lauren.
Another to someone I didn't recognize.
And a third.
The recipient was the same family-law consultant who had helped Claire assemble her case.
But the date on the first payment was six weeks before the basement videos.
Before the bread.
Before I came home early.
Before I knew anything was wrong.
Claire had been preparing this for months.
Thomas looked at me.
“You need to hear the rest.””
“What?””
“The consultant wasn't only helping her build a custody case.””
“What else was he doing?””
“He was helping her create a paper trail that would make it look like you were neglecting Lily.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“So every accusation was planned.””
“Yes.””
I stared at the documents.
Then Thomas said:
“And there's something in Lauren's testimony that changes the entire case.””
“What?””
“Lauren says Claire wasn't doing this alone.””
I frowned.
“Who else?””
Thomas looked at me.
“The person who originally convinced Claire that Lily needed to disappear from your life…”
He paused.
“…was Lily’s own biological mother’s sister.””
I stopped breathing.
Because Lily's mother had been gone for years.
And her family had never contacted us.
Not once.
May you like
Yet somehow, someone from that side of the family had entered my children's lives without me knowing.
And according to Thomas, she had been waiting for the right moment.
