Chapter 6: The Secret Before Me

I opened the door slowly.

A woman stood on the porch holding a small envelope.

She looked nervous.

“Are you Mark?””

“Yes.””

She looked inside the house.

Then at Claire.

Her expression changed.

“I’m sorry.””

Claire stepped forward.

“No.””

The woman swallowed.

“I have to.””

I looked between them.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Rachel Miller.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Claire reacted instantly.

She took a step back.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Rachel looked at her.

“I tried not to come.””

“What is this?”” I asked.

Rachel handed me the envelope.

“I think you should read what’s inside.””

I opened it.

The first page was a printed email.

I read the first line.

My hands went cold.

*"I need help proving he is unstable before the custody hearing.""*

I looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked closer.

The email was from Claire.

My wife.

Rachel spoke quietly.

“She contacted me three months ago.””

“Why?””

“She wanted me to testify.””

“About what?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

“She wanted me to say that Lily had behavioral problems.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted a stranger to say that about my daughter?””

Rachel nodded.

“She said Lily was aggressive. Manipulative. Dangerous.””

Lily moved closer to me.

Her small hand grabbed mine.

Claire shook her head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Rachel looked at her.

“I know exactly what happened.””

I turned to Rachel.

“How do you know?””

“Because I’m the person Claire asked to evaluate Lily.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Evaluate?””

“I’m a child counselor.””

The room went silent.

Claire had planned this.

Not just emotionally.

Not just privately.

She had been building a case.

Against her own daughter.

Rachel continued.

“She told me Lily was lying constantly.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter stared at the floor.

“What did you find?””

Rachel sighed.

“I found a scared child.””

Claire looked away.

Rachel continued.

“I asked Lily simple questions.””

“What kind?””

“Questions about home.””

My chest tightened.

“And?””

“She was afraid to answer.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked directly at Claire.

“Because she kept asking if Mommy would know.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my wife.

“You were going to take my daughter from me.””

Claire started crying.

“I was desperate.””

“Desperate enough to destroy her?””

“No.””

“Then what was this?””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel handed me another paper.

“This is the part you need to see.””

I read it.

It was a note from Claire.

A plan.

A timeline.

Dates.

Conversations.

Things she intended to say.

My stomach twisted as I read one sentence.

*"If Mark believes Lily is difficult, he will eventually give up.""*

I looked up slowly.

“You thought I would give up on my daughter?””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“How else could it mean?””

She covered her face.

“I thought you loved me.””

The words stunned me.

“You thought loving you meant abandoning her?””

“No.””

“But that’s what you wanted.””

Claire looked at the children.

And for a brief second, I saw regret.

Real regret.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

She grabbed it.

I saw the fear return.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

She stepped back.

“No.””

David moved beside me.

“Mark.””

I looked at him.

“That’s not the only thing she’s hiding.””

I stared.

“What do you mean?””

David looked at Claire.

“Tell him.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“I don’t have to.””

Rachel frowned.

“Mark…”

“What?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said:

“The custody case wasn’t her first plan.””

My heart sank.

“What was?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

Then at Noah.

“She had another way to make you leave.””

I felt the room closing in.

“What way?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked down.

His face was filled with fear again.

“What?””

He pointed toward Claire’s phone.

“She wasn’t just talking about taking Lily away.””

A cold silence followed.

“She was talking about making it look like you hurt her.””

My blood froze.

I looked at Claire.

She didn’t deny it.

And that was the moment I realized the truth was much bigger than I ever imagined.

May you like

My wife hadn’t only been hiding what she did to my children.

She had been preparing to destroy me if I ever found out.
