Chapter 4: The Neighbor’s Secret

I stood frozen in the hallway, phone pressed against my ear.

Mrs. Hartwell’s voice had dropped to a whisper.

“Mark, I didn’t know what to do.””

“Tell me everything.””

“I tried talking to Claire.””

“What did she say?””

“She threatened me.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Threatened you how?””

“She said if I interfered, she would tell the neighborhood I was making things up because I was jealous of your family.””

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at the floor.

“No,” she whispered.

Mrs. Hartwell continued.

“I should have called you sooner.””

“What did Lily tell you?””

Another pause.

“She said your wife had a rule.””

“What rule?””

“She wasn't allowed to cry.””

I closed my eyes.

Lily’s words suddenly returned to me.

She learned nobody would come.

I walked into the living room.

“Mrs. Hartwell, when did Lily come to you?””

“Three weeks ago.””

Three weeks.

That meant my daughter had already been trying to tell someone.

While I went to work every day believing my home was safe.

“What happened that day?””

“I was watering my plants when I heard pounding on my back door.””

“Pounding?””

“Yes. I opened it and Lily was standing there.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was hugging herself now.

“She had no shoes on,” Mrs. Hartwell said.

My stomach twisted.

“No shoes?””

“No.””

“What did she say?””

Mrs. Hartwell’s voice cracked.

“She said, ‘Please don't send me back yet.’”

I couldn't breathe.

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

I held up my hand.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

Mrs. Hartwell kept talking.

“I brought Lily inside and gave her some milk and crackers.””

A five-year-old had crossed the yard barefoot to beg a neighbor for food.

I felt ashamed that I hadn't seen it.

“What else did she tell you?””

“She said Mommy made her stay in the basement when you went to work.””

I looked toward the basement door.

“She also said your wife sometimes took away her coat and made her sit in the laundry room when it was cold.””

Claire immediately shouted.

“That never happened!””

Mrs. Hartwell went silent.

I put the phone on speaker.

“You're on speaker. Say that again.””

Mrs. Hartwell hesitated.

“She told me her hands were cold.””

Claire shook her head.

“She lies.””

Lily flinched.

That one word made me turn toward Claire.

“You keep calling her a liar.””

“Because she lies!””

“She's five.””

Claire stepped closer.

“You don't understand what I've dealt with.””

“Then explain it.””

“I was trying to make her respect me.””

“You don't earn respect by starving a child.””

Her eyes flashed.

“She isn't my daughter!””

The words came out before she could stop them.

Silence swallowed the room.

Noah stared at his mother.

Lily stopped breathing for a second.

And I felt something inside my marriage collapse completely.

Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.

“I didn't mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

“No, Mark—”

“You just said exactly what you've been showing them.””

She began crying.

But I couldn't comfort her.

Not this time.

Mrs. Hartwell spoke again.

“Mark…”

I turned toward the phone.

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“I didn't tell you this before because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“When Lily came to my house, she wasn't alone.””

My chest tightened.

“Who was with her?””

“I saw Noah standing across the street.””

I looked at my stepson.

He was crying now.

I walked toward him.

“Noah, did you follow Lily to Mrs. Hartwell’s?””

He nodded.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted someone to help her.””

Claire covered her face.

I crouched in front of him.

“What did you see before she went outside?””

Noah swallowed.

“Mom was in the kitchen.””

“What was she doing?””

“She was packing Lily’s lunch.””

I frowned.

“I thought Claire hid her lunchbox.””

“She did.””

“Then why was she packing it?””

Noah looked toward the floor.

“Because she didn't want you to notice.””

I felt sick.

“What do you mean?””

“She packed food in a bag.””

“What happened to it?””

“She took it back.””

“Why?””

“Because she said Lily hadn't earned it.””

I looked at Claire.

She said nothing.

Noah continued.

“Then she told me something.””

“What?””

“She said if I ever told Dad, he'd leave too.””

I stared at him.

“Your mother said that?””

He nodded.

“She said Dad would think I was a bad kid.””

I pulled him into my arms.

His small body shook against my chest.

“You are not bad.””

He cried harder.

“I should've told you sooner.””

“You were scared.””

He nodded.

I released him and looked toward Lily.

She was standing near the sofa, clutching her blanket.

I walked to her.

“Sweetheart, did Mommy ever hurt you anywhere else?””

Lily looked at Claire.

Claire stared back.

Lily's eyes dropped.

Then she quietly touched her wrist.

I noticed a faint red mark around it.

My blood ran cold.

“What happened there?””

Claire immediately said, “She fell.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Claire turned pale.

I knelt.

“Tell me.””

Lily whispered:

“Mommy held me there when I tried to get upstairs.””

“When?””

“On Tuesday.””

I thought about Tuesday.

I had come home late.

Claire had told me Lily was already asleep.

She had even kissed me and said, “You work too hard.””

I remembered believing her.

Lily suddenly looked past me toward the front door.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Don't go to work tomorrow.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

She squeezed her blanket.

“Because Mommy said tomorrow is the day she was going to make me disappear.””

My entire body went numb.

Claire stumbled backward.

“That is not what I said.””

I stood slowly.

“What exactly did you say to her?””

“I was angry.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“I didn't mean it literally.””

Mrs. Hartwell gasped through the speaker.

“Mark, call the police.””

Claire spun toward the phone.

“No!””

That single word was louder than anything she had said all morning.

And for the first time, I understood what terrified her most.

It wasn't losing me.

It wasn't losing the house.

It wasn't even being exposed.

She was terrified because someone else knew what she had done.

Then a knock sounded at the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Claire went completely still.

Noah grabbed my shirt.

Lily hid behind me.

I walked toward the door.

May you like

And before I touched the handle, a man’s voice came from outside.

“Mark? We need to talk about your wife.””
