Chapter 8: The Truth About My Baby

I couldn’t hear the whispers anymore.

I couldn’t hear the guests.

I couldn’t hear the music that had been playing only hours before.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

And my baby’s.

My hand moved over my stomach.

A protective instinct took over.

Because no matter what happened between me and Daniel, there was one person in that room who deserved my attention more than anyone.

My child.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Emily, please.””

I looked at him.

The man I once trusted more than anyone.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I know what it looks like.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You know what it is.””

His face collapsed.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I looked at the screen.

“At what point does a mistake become a choice?””

He had no answer.

Because there were too many choices.

Too many moments where he could have told me.

Too many nights where he held me and said he loved me while hiding the truth.

Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“You’re exaggerating.””

Everyone looked at her.

Even Chloe.

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“This family needed stability.””

I turned toward her.

“You mean money.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s what you keep saying.””

I stepped closer.

“You keep telling me I don’t understand.””

I pointed at the torn dress still hanging from my body.

“But I understand this.””

My voice became stronger.

“You looked at a pregnant woman and decided humiliating her was acceptable.””

Eleanor’s face tightened.

“You embarrassed us.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You embarrassed yourselves.””

The words landed harder than shouting.

Because they were true.

My father moved beside me.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Is there anything else?””

He hesitated.

That scared me.

Because my father always had an answer.

“What?””

He handed me another folder.

“I hoped I wouldn’t have to show you this.””

My stomach tightened.

I opened it.

Inside was a medical document.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

I looked at my father.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“What did you do?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Emily, wait.””

The room became silent again.

I looked at the document.

It was a request.

A legal request.

For access to my child’s future trust.

Before my baby was even born.

I looked at Daniel.

“You tried to control my child’s inheritance?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

I stared at him.

“Our family?””

I held the paper.

“You mean your family.””

He stepped closer.

“I thought if I could secure things before the baby arrived…”

I cut him off.

“Before the baby arrived?””

The words echoed.

Because suddenly I understood.

My pregnancy.

My child.

Everything had become part of their plan.

Daniel covered his face.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You were.””

A silence followed.

Then Chloe spoke softly.

“I never wanted this.””

Everyone turned.

She looked broken.

For the first time, she looked human.

“I thought Emily was just lucky.””

I looked at her.

“But you never even tried to know me.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

That admission surprised me.

Because cruelty often hides behind excuses.

But sometimes people finally face what they did.

“I was jealous,” Chloe whispered.

“I hated that you were kind and still powerful.””

I looked at her.

“And you thought destroying me would make you feel better.””

She cried quietly.

“Yes.””

No excuse.

No defense.

Just the truth.

My father stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.””

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?””

My father’s expression was cold.

“It means every legal action begins tomorrow morning.””

Daniel went pale.

“Robert, please.””

My father shook his head.

“You had years to be honest.””

I looked around the ballroom.

The same place where I had arrived hoping to be accepted.

The same place where they tried to destroy me.

But I was no longer the woman who walked in.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From my lawyer.

I opened it.

One sentence.

“Emily, we found the final account.””

I frowned.

Final account?

Then another message arrived.

“Your husband has been transferring money from your personal account for eighteen months.””

My heart stopped.

Eighteen months.

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed when he saw my expression.

Because he knew.

He knew what I had discovered.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“Daniel.””

He froze.

“How much did you take from me?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

And after everything I had learned that night, I still wasn’t prepared for his answer.

Because the amount he whispered was not just money.

May you like

It was proof that he had planned his betrayal long before he ever said:

“I love you.””
