Chapter 2: The Secret My Husband Never Knew

The ballroom doors opened.

But nobody entered.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, everyone simply stared at me.

The woman with the torn dress.

The pregnant woman who had finally stopped apologizing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who was that?””

I looked at him.

The same man who had watched his mother humiliate me.

The same man who had handed over my purse like I was a stranger.

“You don’t know?””

His jaw tightened.

“I asked you a question.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was Daniel.

He always wanted answers.

But he never wanted to hear the truth.

Before I could respond, Chloe crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Her voice was louder now.

She was trying to regain control.

“She’s creating drama because she got caught.””

I turned toward her.

“Caught doing what?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Stealing my ring.””

“Then why haven’t you found it?””

The room went quiet again.

Chloe’s face hardened.

“Maybe you hid it.””

Eleanor immediately stepped in.

“Enough pretending.””

She pointed at my torn gown.

“You embarrassed yourself tonight.””

I looked down at the ripped fabric.

Then back at her.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You embarrassed yourself.””

A few guests exchanged looks.

Eleanor’s expression changed.

She was not used to being challenged.

“You think making one phone call changes anything?””

I held my phone in my hand.

“Yes.””

She laughed.

“You have no idea who you are dealing with.””

I looked at Daniel.

“No. You don’t.””

That was the first time I saw uncertainty on his face.

Because Daniel knew there were parts of my life I had never discussed.

He knew I came from a wealthy family.

But he believed I had walked away from that world completely.

And I had.

When I met Daniel, I wanted someone who loved me without knowing my last name.

I wanted a normal life.

I wanted a husband who saw me, not my family’s influence.

So I never told him everything.

I never told him about the company my father built.

I never told him about the boardrooms where people waited for my father’s decisions.

I never told him that the reason I lived simply was because I wanted peace.

Not because I was poor.

But Daniel’s family had spent years confusing my humility with weakness.

And tonight they learned the difference.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From my father.

“Security footage acquired.””

My heart stopped.

Chloe noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“You’re bluffing.””

Another message appeared.

“Your husband’s family made a mistake. They forgot the ballroom belongs to one of our partner hotels.””

I looked around the room.

The beautiful decorations.

The expensive flowers.

The giant crystal lights.

Suddenly everything looked different.

Because they thought they owned this night.

They didn’t.

Daniel saw the message.

“What does that mean?””

I locked my phone.

“It means the truth is about to arrive.””

Five minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

A man in a dark suit walked inside carrying a tablet.

Behind him were two security officers.

The whispers began immediately.

Eleanor’s face changed.

Because she recognized the man.

“Mr. Carter?””

The security director nodded politely.

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

Chloe looked confused.

“Why is he here?””

The man turned toward me.

“Mrs. Hayes.””

The entire room froze.

Mrs. Hayes.

Not the name they called me.

Not the woman they mocked.

The name connected to a family they never expected.

Daniel stared.

“Hayes?””

I looked at my husband.

“Yes.””

His face went pale.

“My real surname.””

The security director lifted the tablet.

“We reviewed the footage from the ballroom cameras.””

Chloe’s confidence disappeared.

“What footage?””

The man pressed play.

The entire ballroom watched the screen.

And there it was.

The moment before the accusation.

The moment Chloe walked behind me.

The moment she removed her own ring from her finger.

The room exploded with gasps.

“No,” Chloe whispered.

But the video continued.

It showed Eleanor stepping on my dress.

It showed Daniel standing there.

Watching.

Doing nothing.

Daniel looked sick.

“I didn’t know.””

I stared at him.

“That’s the problem.””

The security director turned off the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“Your father asked me to inform you that the next part is ready.””

My stomach tightened.

“The next part?””

The man nodded.

“He said there was one thing you needed to see before he arrived.””

He handed me a second envelope.

My name was written across the front.

But beneath it was another name.

A name I had never expected.

Daniel saw it.

And his expression changed instantly.

Because he knew that name.

He stepped backward.

“No…”

I looked between him and the envelope.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because my father had uncovered something about my husband.

May you like

Something Daniel had hidden since the day we met.

And when I opened that envelope, my entire marriage was about to collapse.
