Chapter 6: The Mother-in-Law Who Created The Monster

The entire ballroom turned toward Eleanor.

For years, she had controlled every conversation.

She decided who was respectable.

Who belonged.

Who was beneath her.

But now, for the first time, everyone was waiting for her to explain herself.

And she looked afraid.

“Daniel,” Eleanor said quietly.

It was not a warning.

It was a plea.

That alone told me everything.

I stared at my husband.

“What do you mean someone forced you?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That sentence describes our entire marriage.””

He looked at Eleanor.

“My mother knew.””

The room went silent.

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice trembled.

“I’m done protecting everyone except myself.””

I watched him carefully.

Because after everything, I still didn’t know whether this was another manipulation.

Another performance.

But then he said something I never expected.

“She created the plan.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

“She found Emily first.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew your identity before I did.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

Eleanor.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who called me a parasite.

The woman who tore my dress.

She knew exactly who I was.

“You knew?”” I asked.

Eleanor said nothing.

“Answer me.””

Her perfect expression finally cracked.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

“You knew my family.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was a Hayes.””

“Yes.””

“And you still spent years treating me like I was worthless.””

Her lips tightened.

“You were hiding your identity.””

I stared at her.

“That was my choice.””

“No.””

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“That was a mistake.””

A mistake.

My entire life.

My kindness.

My desire for a simple marriage.

She saw all of it as a weakness.

Daniel stepped forward.

“My mother contacted me after she discovered Emily.””

I looked at him.

“She recruited you.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The truth hurt differently when spoken aloud.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it confirmed my worst fear.

The beginning of my marriage had been a strategy.

Not a love story.

“What did she promise you?”” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Eleanor answered.

“Security.””

I turned toward her.

She looked almost angry now.

“You don’t understand what it was like.””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

I looked at my torn dress.

“I understand exactly what it was like.””

Eleanor ignored me.

“Daniel was struggling. He had nothing after losing his position at Hayes International.””

My father’s expression changed.

“You mean after he was fired for misconduct.””

Eleanor glared at him.

“You ruined his career.””

My father shook his head.

“No. He did.””

Daniel looked down.

And I realized something.

For all of Eleanor’s manipulation, Daniel still made choices.

He chose to lie.

He chose to marry me.

He chose to let me stand alone tonight.

I looked at him.

“You could have told me.””

He whispered:

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

The answer should have hurt.

But it didn’t.

Not anymore.

Because I finally understood.

He was not afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing what I represented.

My father’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“Send it immediately.””

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He turned to me.

“The final evidence arrived.””

Daniel went pale.

Eleanor stepped back.

“What evidence?””

My father looked directly at them.

“The reason Daniel and Eleanor thought Emily would never discover the truth.””

He handed me another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A meeting.

A date.

A location.

And two people sitting across from each other.

Daniel.

And Chloe.

My breath caught.

“What is this?””

My father’s voice was quiet.

“Your husband wasn’t the only person involved.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Chloe.

The bride.

The woman who accused me of stealing.

The woman who destroyed my dress.

She had been part of this from the beginning.

Then I saw the date.

The meeting happened three days before Daniel proposed to me.

Three days.

I looked at Chloe.

Her face had lost all color.

And for the first time all night, she whispered the words I never expected to hear.

“Emily…”

May you like

I stared at her.

“Why were you planning my marriage before I even knew you?””
