Chapter 8: The Vows That Exposed a Family Secret

The ceremony began twelve minutes late.

But nobody complained.

The guests were still discussing the confrontation in the ballroom when the musicians began playing the wedding processional.

Aaliyah stood behind the closed ceremony doors.

Her bouquet trembled slightly in her hands.

Marcus was waiting at the altar.

Tasha stood beside her, adjusting the veil.

"You okay?"" Tasha whispered.

Aaliyah nodded.

"Yes.""

"Really?""

Aaliyah looked at the doors.

"I don't know if my father is going to walk me down the aisle.""

Tasha's expression softened.

"Do you want him to?""

Aaliyah didn't answer immediately.

For twenty-eight years, she had imagined that moment.

Her father offering his arm.

Her mother watching from somewhere in the front row.

The music rising as she walked toward the man she loved.

But now the thought of taking Warren's arm made her stomach tighten.

Tasha gently touched her shoulder.

"You don't need his permission to have a beautiful wedding.""

Aaliyah looked at her friend.

"Will you walk with me?""

Tasha's eyes widened.

"Me?""

"You've stood beside me through everything. I'd like you beside me for this, too.""

Tasha pressed her lips together.

Then she nodded.

"Absolutely.""

The doors opened.

The music began.

And Aaliyah walked into the room with Tasha beside her.

A soft murmur moved through the guests.

Marcus stood at the altar, his expression changing the moment he saw her.

He smiled.

Not a polite smile.

Not a camera-ready smile.

A genuine one.

The kind that made Aaliyah feel as though the rest of the room had disappeared.

When she reached him, he took both her hands.

"You look beautiful," he whispered.

"So do you.""

The officiant smiled.

"Shall we begin?""

Aaliyah nodded.

As the ceremony continued, she noticed Warren sitting in the second row.

Monique was beside him.

Simone sat on the opposite side, staring straight ahead.

Warren looked smaller than he had that morning.

He wasn't holding a microphone now.

He wasn't giving instructions.

He was simply watching.

The officiant began speaking about commitment, respect, and the responsibility of choosing one another every day.

Then came the vows.

Marcus went first.

"Aaliyah, the first thing I noticed about you was your laugh. The second was the way you remembered everybody's name at that charity event. But the thing that made me fall in love with you was watching how you treated people when nobody was paying attention.""

He paused.

"You have a heart that keeps giving, even when the world gives you reasons to stop. I promise to never make you feel like you have to earn your place beside me. You already belong.""

Aaliyah's eyes filled.

Marcus continued.

"I promise to celebrate your gifts, protect your peace, and stand beside you when things get difficult. Not because you're incapable of standing alone, but because love means choosing to stand together.""

Aaliyah wiped one tear.

Then she unfolded her own vows.

"Marcus, I used to think love meant making everyone happy. I thought if I worked hard enough, forgave enough, and stayed quiet enough, I could keep the people I loved from leaving.""

She glanced briefly toward the second row.

"But you taught me that real love doesn't ask me to disappear.""

Marcus squeezed her hands.

"I promise to be honest with you. To laugh with you. To build a home where neither of us has to compete for kindness. And when life gets difficult, I promise that we will face it together.""

Her voice trembled.

"Most of all, I promise never to forget who I am while loving you.""

The officiant smiled.

"By the authority vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife.""

Marcus kissed her.

The ballroom erupted.

Tasha screamed.

Guests clapped.

Several people stood.

For the first time that day, Aaliyah felt completely free.

Then Marcus leaned close.

"Mrs. Carter.""

She laughed.

"Mr. Carter.""

He kissed her again.

At the reception, the newlyweds entered beneath a shower of gold confetti.

The five-tier cake stood waiting.

Denise approached with a microphone.

"Before we begin the reception, I want to recognize someone special.""

Aaliyah looked confused.

Denise smiled.

"Tonight's wedding cake was designed and created by the bride herself. Every flower, every detail, every gold decoration was made by hand.""

The guests applauded.

"And I think we should give her the recognition she deserves.""

The applause grew louder.

Tasha stood on her chair.

"THAT'S MY GIRL!""

Aaliyah laughed and covered her face.

Marcus wrapped an arm around her waist.

"See? Told you people would love it.""

She leaned against him.

Then Denise continued.

"There's actually one more thing. Aaliyah, would you mind joining me near the cake?""

Aaliyah approached.

Denise handed her the microphone.

"I wanted to ask you about the inscription.""

Aaliyah looked down at the bottom tier.

*Built with love. Protected by courage.*

She smiled.

"My mother taught me that.""

A few guests nodded.

"She passed away when I was younger. But she was the first person who taught me how to bake. She always said that creating something beautiful was a way of giving love to people.""

Aaliyah paused.

"Last night, I almost gave up on this cake. Someone destroyed the first one, and I thought that meant the whole day was ruined.""

She looked around the room.

"But I remembered something my mother wrote to me years ago. She said that a beautiful thing doesn't become less beautiful because someone tries to destroy it.""

Her voice strengthened.

"So I made another one.""

The guests applauded again.

Warren lowered his eyes.

Monique leaned toward him.

"She really did make it.""

Warren didn't respond.

Simone was staring at the cake.

Her expression was unreadable.

Then Denise announced the cake-cutting ceremony.

Marcus handed Aaliyah the knife.

Together, they cut the first slice.

The guests cheered.

Marcus tasted a little of the vanilla buttercream.

His eyes widened.

"Baby.""

"What?""

"This is incredible.""

Aaliyah laughed.

"You're supposed to say that.""

"No. I'm serious.""

He leaned closer.

"You're making our anniversary cake, too.""

She smiled.

"Every year.""

The first slices were served.

Guests complimented the flavors.

The salted caramel tier disappeared quickly.

Aaliyah watched the servers carry plates around the room.

For a brief moment, she forgot about everything that had happened.

Then she noticed a woman approaching.

It was Aunt Renee, Warren's older sister.

She hugged Aaliyah.

"Sweetheart, that was beautiful. Your mother would be proud.""

"Thank you, Aunt Renee.""

Renee glanced toward Warren.

Then she lowered her voice.

"There's something you should know.""

Aaliyah frowned.

"What is it?""

Renee looked uncomfortable.

"Your father told Monique something last night. Something about the bakery.""

Aaliyah's smile faded.

"What about it?""

Renee took a breath.

"Monique has been asking Warren to sign over the business.""

Aaliyah stared at her.

"Why?""

Renee looked toward the family table.

"Because they want Simone to run it.""

Aaliyah felt the room tilt.

"Since when?""

"Months, sweetheart. Your father was planning to announce it after the wedding.""

Aaliyah looked across the ballroom.

Warren was speaking with Monique.

Simone was standing beside them.

All three seemed to be discussing something intensely.

Renee touched Aaliyah's arm.

"I didn't want to ruin your day. But I thought you deserved to know.""

Aaliyah swallowed.

"Thank you for telling me.""

She turned toward Marcus.

He noticed her expression immediately.

"What happened?""

Aaliyah leaned close.

"My father is planning to give the bakery to Simone.""

Marcus looked at her.

"The bakery you helped build?""

She nodded.

"The bakery my mother and I started working in together. The bakery I've spent years keeping alive.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Does he own it?""

"Part of it.""

"Part of it?""

Aaliyah stared at him.

Then she remembered something.

Her mother had left her a document years ago.

A document Warren had told her was only a sentimental keepsake.

It was still inside the old wooden box.

And suddenly, Aaliyah understood why Warren had been so determined to keep her away from certain business decisions.

She looked toward the family table.

Her father was no longer looking at her.

May you like

He was looking at Monique.

And Monique was holding a folder.
