Chapter 7: The Father Who Lied in Front of 200 Guests
For three seconds, Aaliyah couldn't breathe.
She stood at the top of the staircase leading into the ballroom, one hand gripping her bouquet and the other holding the folded screenshots.
Below her, nearly two hundred guests were watching Warren Carter stand beside the wedding cake.
He held the microphone with the confidence of a man who believed nobody would challenge him.
"My daughter didn't make this cake," he repeated.
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Warren continued.
"I know people are impressed by it, but I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea. She ordered it from a professional bakery and brought it here this morning.""
Aaliyah closed her eyes.
Tasha whispered, "I'm going to kill him.""
"Don't," Aaliyah replied quietly.
"Girl, he's lying about you at your own wedding.""
"I heard him.""
Downstairs, Monique approached Warren and whispered something.
He nodded and continued.
"Of course, Aaliyah has always been creative. She's worked in our family bakery for years. But I know what it takes to produce something like this. It's not something you make overnight.""
Several guests nodded politely.
Simone stood near the front table, pretending to look uncomfortable.
But the corners of her mouth were lifting.
Aaliyah recognized that expression.
It was the same one Simone had worn when the first cake collapsed into the sink.
A woman near the dance floor raised her hand.
"Mr. Carter, are you saying your daughter lied about making it?""
Warren cleared his throat.
"I'm saying we should give credit where credit is due.""
Aaliyah started down the stairs.
Her heels clicked against the marble.
Tasha followed closely.
The first guest noticed her.
Then another.
Within seconds, the room grew quiet.
Warren turned.
His expression changed when he saw his daughter approaching in her wedding gown.
"Aaliyah," he said, lowering the microphone.
"We were just discussing something.""
She stopped in front of him.
"Apparently.""
Warren glanced at the guests.
"Let's not do this here.""
"Where would you prefer? The bakery? The kitchen? Somewhere you can pretend nobody heard you?""
A few people looked down.
Monique stepped forward.
"Sweetheart, your father is only trying to explain—"
"Please don't call me sweetheart.""
Monique froze.
Aaliyah turned toward Warren.
"Did you make this cake?""
"No.""
"Did you watch me make the first cake?""
"That's different.""
"Did you see me working on the second one?""
Warren shifted his weight.
"I wasn't here all night.""
"Exactly.""
Aaliyah reached into her handbag and removed the folded screenshots.
She handed them to Denise.
"Would you mind putting these on the screen?""
Denise nodded.
She had prepared the ballroom's presentation system for photographs and wedding videos.
Within moments, the large screen behind the head table changed.
A message appeared.
*SIMONE: Just keep the staff away from the cake for a few minutes.*
Then another.
*SIMONE: If you don't help me, I'll tell Denise you stole the vendor's deposit money.*
A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.
Simone's face went white.
"What is this?"" she demanded.
Aaliyah looked at her.
"Something you sent.""
"That's fake!""
Denise stepped forward.
"Darius provided the original messages from his phone. I verified them.""
Simone looked around desperately.
"He's lying!""
From the kitchen entrance, Darius appeared.
He was still wearing his black event-staff uniform.
"I have no reason to lie," he said.
Simone stared at him.
"You agreed to help me!""
Darius shook his head.
"I agreed because you told me the cake was dangerous. Then I found out you were lying.""
Warren turned toward Simone.
"What is he talking about?""
Simone swallowed.
"Nothing, Dad.""
Aaliyah lifted the second sheet.
"There's more.""
The screen changed again.
This time, it showed the family group chat.
Simone's accusation that Aaliyah had purchased the cake.
The photograph she had attached.
And the time stamp.
Then Denise displayed a photograph Tasha had taken inside the bakery at 5:58 a.m.
Aaliyah stood beside the finished cake.
Her apron was stained with buttercream.
Her hands were covered in gold edible paint.
The five-tier cake was clearly visible behind her.
The date and time appeared in the corner.
A guest near the front whispered, "She really did make it.""
Another woman shook her head.
"After somebody destroyed the first one?""
Aaliyah looked at Warren.
"Would you like to explain why you told everyone I didn't make it?""
Warren's face reddened.
"I was trying to prevent embarrassment.""
"Whose embarrassment?""
He didn't answer.
Monique moved closer.
"Aaliyah, this is a family matter. You don't need to humiliate your father in front of everybody.""
Aaliyah slowly turned toward her.
"Your daughter tried to destroy my wedding cake twice. My father stood beside her both times. And now you're asking me to protect the family's reputation?""
Monique's lips tightened.
"Simone made a mistake.""
"Twice?""
"She was upset.""
"Then she should have spoken to someone instead of destroying my work.""
Simone suddenly stepped forward.
"Because you always get everything!""
The room went silent.
Aaliyah stared at her.
Simone's voice cracked.
"You got Dad. You got Marcus. You got the bakery.
Everybody loves you. Even when you do something wrong, people defend you!""
Aaliyah's eyebrows lifted.
"Everybody loves me?""
Simone laughed bitterly.
"Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.""
Aaliyah took one step closer.
"Marcus didn't choose me because I took him from you. He chose me because he loves me. And the bakery wasn't handed to me. I worked there while you spent years telling people it was beneath you.""
Simone's eyes filled with tears.
"I loved him first.""
"That doesn't make him yours.""
The words were quiet.
But they landed like a slap.
Warren raised his voice.
"Enough! This is still my family!""
Aaliyah looked at him.
"Then why have I spent my entire life feeling like an outsider in it?""
Warren opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
At that moment, the ballroom doors opened.
Marcus entered.
He had been waiting in the groom's preparation room when the coordinator told him something had happened.
He walked straight toward Aaliyah.
"Baby, what's going on?""
She looked at him.
For the first time that morning, her composure began to crack.
"My father told everyone I didn't make the cake.""
Marcus looked at Warren.
Then at the cake.
Then at the photographs on the screen.
He turned back to Aaliyah.
"Did you make this?""
"Yes.""
He smiled.
"Then why are we discussing it?""
A few guests laughed softly.
Marcus took her hand.
"I don't care whether you made it, bought it, or asked somebody else to make it. I love you. That's what matters.""
He turned toward the room.
"But since we're discussing honesty, I want everyone to understand something.""
Warren stiffened.
Marcus continued.
"Aaliyah spent the entire night creating that cake after someone deliberately destroyed her first one. I know because she told me this morning. She didn't want to upset me before the wedding.""
He looked directly at Simone.
"And I know exactly who she said did it.""
Simone's face drained of color.
Marcus squeezed Aaliyah's hand.
"Now, I think it's time we stop giving this behavior any more attention.""
He turned toward the ceremony doors.
"Come on, sweetheart. Let's get married.""
Aaliyah looked once more at her father.
Warren was standing beside the cake.
The microphone hung loosely in his hand.
She could have said more.
She could have listed every birthday, every holiday, every moment he had chosen silence over defending her.
But she didn't.
She simply turned away.
As Marcus led her toward the ceremony, Simone whispered something behind them.
"You're going to regret this.""
Aaliyah stopped.
She looked over her shoulder.
"No, Simone. That's what I used to do. Regret standing up for myself.""
May you like
Then she walked away.
And for the first time in years, Warren watched his daughter leave without turning back to see whether he was following.
