Chapter 3: Five Tiers of Something They Couldn't Destroy
At 5:58 a.m., the bakery windows began to glow.
The streets of Baltimore were still quiet.
A delivery truck rumbled past the corner. Somewhere outside, a bus hissed as it pulled away from a stop. The sky slowly changed from charcoal gray to a pale shade of blue.
Inside the family bakery, Aaliyah Carter was still standing.
Her feet hurt.
Her shoulders ached.
There was a faint streak of gold edible paint across her left wrist, and a little buttercream near her elbow.
But she was smiling.
In front of her stood the finished wedding cake.
Five magnificent tiers.
Midnight blue buttercream covered each layer, so smooth that the surface reflected the overhead lights.
Antique-gold patterns wrapped around the cake in delicate geometric designs. The lines were inspired by traditional African textile motifs, carefully painted by hand.
Between the tiers, white sugar flowers opened like garden roses.
Some were small and delicate.
Others were larger, with dozens of individually shaped petals.
At the very top sat a single white garden rose.
The same kind of flower she had been holding when Simone destroyed the first cake.
Only this one was surrounded by tiny gold leaves.
Aaliyah stepped back.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then she slowly turned toward the large glass cabinet behind the worktable.
Her reflection appeared beside the cake.
Her eyes were tired.
Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, with a few curls escaping around her face.
There were dark circles beneath her eyes.
But her shoulders were straight.
Her chin was lifted.
She looked like a woman who had finally stopped asking permission to take up space.
Tasha came out of the back room carrying two cups of coffee.
She stopped immediately.
"Oh, wow.""
Aaliyah smiled.
"Finished.""
Tasha put the coffee down.
She walked around the cake slowly, taking in every detail.
"The gold...""
She leaned closer.
"The flowers...""
Then she looked at Aaliyah.
"You did all of this tonight?""
Aaliyah nodded.
"Most of it.""
Tasha shook her head.
"Your mother would have lost her mind.""
Aaliyah looked at the photograph resting near the mixing bowl.
"She would have told me the bottom tier needed another coat.""
Both women laughed.
Then Tasha's expression softened.
"How are you feeling?""
Aaliyah looked at the cake.
"Honestly?""
"Honestly.""
"I'm angry.""
Tasha nodded.
"I'm heartbroken, too. Not because of the cake. Because I thought my father would stand up for me.""
Tasha pulled out a chair.
"That's the part that hurts, isn't it?""
Aaliyah sat beside her.
"He watched her destroy something I made with my own hands. And he couldn't even ask why.""
"That's not your fault.""
"I know.""
Aaliyah stared at her fingers.
"When my mother died, I thought my father and I would become closer. Instead, he built a new family and expected me to fit wherever there was room.""
Tasha reached across the table.
"You deserved better.""
Aaliyah nodded.
For years, she had convinced herself that keeping the peace was the same as being loved.
She had swallowed insults.
Excused Simone's jealousy.
Accepted Monique's constant comparisons.
And whenever Warren failed to defend her, she told herself he was simply trying to avoid conflict.
But last night had changed something.
Not because a cake had fallen.
Because her father had watched it happen and had chosen not to care.
Her phone buzzed.
Aaliyah glanced at the screen.
A message from Warren.
*Dad:* Where are you? We need to discuss transportation for the wedding.
She stared at the words.
No apology.
No question about whether she had managed to make another cake.
Nothing.
A second message appeared.
*Dad:* Also, Monique says the bakery needs to be cleaned before we leave. Don't forget.
Tasha read it over her shoulder.
"Unbelievable.""
Aaliyah placed the phone facedown.
"I'll handle it.""
"Are you going to tell him about the cake?""
"No.""
Tasha looked at the enormous five-tier masterpiece.
"You're going to surprise everybody?""
Aaliyah smiled.
"Something like that.""
Her phone buzzed again.
This time, it was Marcus.
*Marcus:* Good morning, future Mrs. Carter. I hope you're getting ready to make me the happiest man alive.
Aaliyah's smile widened.
She took a photograph of the cake.
But before sending it, she hesitated.
Then she deleted the picture.
Some things deserved to be seen in person.
*Aaliyah:* Getting ready. I have a surprise for you.
*Marcus:* Should I be worried?
*Aaliyah:* Only if you don't like surprises.
*Marcus:* I love anything you create.
She put the phone down.
Tasha grinned.
"That man has no idea what's coming.""
"Neither does anyone else.""
At 6:24 a.m., they began preparing the cake for transportation.
The bakery had a special reinforced delivery vehicle with adjustable shelving. Aaliyah had used it for years to deliver elaborate wedding cakes around Baltimore.
Tasha helped secure the bottom tier.
Aaliyah checked the temperature inside the vehicle and adjusted the supports.
Every tier had to remain stable.
Every flower needed protection.
Every gold detail had to survive the journey.
She placed the small wooden box containing her mother's letter into her handbag.
Then she returned to the kitchen for one final look.
The old cake stand was still sitting beside the sink.
Aaliyah picked it up.
For a moment, she remembered the three-tier cake that had collapsed there.
She remembered Simone's smile.
Monique's excuses.
Her father's careless words.
Then she looked at the new cake waiting by the delivery door.
Five tiers.
Midnight blue.
Gold.
White roses.
She reached into her pocket and found the little photograph of her mother.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Tasha appeared behind her.
"Ready?""
Aaliyah nodded.
Together, they carefully rolled the cake toward the loading area.
The morning sun slipped through the front windows, touching the gold details and making them shimmer.
Aaliyah stopped once more.
She turned toward the large glass cabinet.
In its reflection, she could see herself standing beside the finished masterpiece.
Her eyes still carried the exhaustion of a sleepless night.
But she was no longer looking at the woman who had sat crying beside a broken cake.
She was looking at someone who had rebuilt it.
Someone who had taken the worst night of her life and turned it into something extraordinary.
She smiled at her reflection.
"Today's my day," she whispered.
Tasha heard her.
"That's right.""
Aaliyah gently adjusted the top rose.
Then she stepped back.
"Let's go.""
Neither of them noticed the black SUV slowing outside the bakery.
A few seconds later, it pulled into the parking space directly in front of the entrance.
The driver's door opened.
Warren stepped out.
Monique followed.
And Simone climbed out of the passenger side, holding a garment bag over one arm.
They had arrived early.
They had come to check whether Aaliyah had somehow managed to replace the destroyed cake.
Simone looked through the front window.
Her eyes moved across the empty display shelves.
Then she spotted Tasha near the delivery vehicle.
"Where is she?"" Simone asked.
Warren frowned.
"Probably still cleaning.""
Monique adjusted her handbag.
"Well, she better hurry. We have a wedding to get to.""
Simone walked toward the bakery door.
She was already preparing what she would say when she found Aaliyah with no cake, no solution, and no choice but to admit defeat.
But the moment she reached the glass entrance, she stopped.
Through the narrow opening between the curtains, she saw a flash of midnight blue.
Then gold.
Then five perfectly stacked tiers.
Her smile disappeared.
"What..."" Simone whispered.
Warren turned toward her.
"What is it?""
Simone didn't answer.
She pressed her face closer to the glass.
And for the first time that morning, the woman who had pushed the first cake into the sink looked genuinely afraid.
Because Aaliyah hadn't just replaced the cake.
May you like
She had made something far more beautiful.
And Simone was about to discover that destroying her sister's first masterpiece had been the biggest mistake she had ever made.
