Chapter 1: The Cake That Wasn't Supposed to Survive

He chose her. I will make him regret it.

That was what Simone thought as she stood behind her older stepsister, watching her put the final touches on a wedding cake that was supposed to be the centerpiece of tomorrow's celebration.

Simone smiled.

Not because she was happy for Aaliyah.

But because she had already decided that her sister wasn't going to get the wedding she had dreamed about.

Inside a small family bakery in Baltimore, Maryland, Aaliyah Carter was putting the finishing touches on a three-tier pearl-white wedding cake.

The bakery had belonged to her father, Warren, for nearly thirty years. Its faded blue sign hung above the entrance, and the sweet smell of buttercream, vanilla, and freshly baked pound cake seemed permanently trapped in its walls.

Aaliyah had practically grown up there.

At eight, she had stood on an overturned milk crate to watch her father decorate birthday cakes.

At sixteen, she had learned how to pipe roses.

At twenty-two, she had started creating wedding cakes that customers drove from neighboring cities to order.

Now, at twenty-eight, she was preparing the most important cake of her career.

Her own.

The cake stood on a silver display stand near the stainless-steel sink. Three perfectly level tiers were covered in smooth ivory buttercream, with delicate pearl details running along the edges. Handmade sugar flowers rested between the tiers.

Beside it lay a carefully marked sketch, a piping bag, several decorating tools, and a small box containing the final sugar flower.

Aaliyah stepped back.

"Almost there," she whispered.

Her best friend, Tasha, had left twenty minutes earlier after helping clean the kitchen.

The bakery was quiet now, except for the hum of the refrigerator and the soft jazz playing from an old radio.

Aaliyah picked up the final flower.

It was a white garden rose, made from sugar petals so thin that the light seemed to pass through them.

She had spent almost two hours making it.

"Beautiful, isn't it?""

Aaliyah turned.

Simone stood in the doorway.

At twenty-seven, Simone was only eleven months younger than Aaliyah, though they had grown up in very different circumstances.

Aaliyah was Warren's biological daughter from his first marriage. Simone was the daughter of Monique, the woman Warren married after Aaliyah's mother passed away.

They had shared a house for nearly twenty years.

But they had never truly shared a family.

"Thank you," Aaliyah said, returning her attention to the cake.

"I just need to place this one.""

Simone walked closer.

"Must be nice.""

Aaliyah glanced at her.

"What?""

"Getting everything you want.""

Aaliyah sighed.

"Simone, please. I'm exhausted. Can we not do this tonight?""

"Do what?""

"Whatever this is.""

Simone picked up the corner of the cake sketch.

"Five tiers? I thought you were making three.""

"That was the original design. I decided to change it.""

"Of course you did.""

Aaliyah gently took the sketch from her.

"Don't bend that. It's the final design.""

Simone laughed without humor.

"You really think you're special, don't you?""

Aaliyah placed the sketch back on the table.

"I think I'm getting married tomorrow. That's all.""

"To Marcus.""

"Yes.""

Simone's jaw tightened.

Marcus had been part of their social circle for years. He was a successful real estate attorney with a warm smile, a quiet confidence, and a habit of remembering little things about people.

Simone had liked him long before he ever noticed her.

She had flirted with him at family cookouts. She had offered to help him decorate his new apartment. She had even sent him late-night messages pretending she needed advice about her career.

But Marcus had always been polite.

Then he met Aaliyah again at a charity fundraiser.

Six months later, he proposed.

Simone had never forgiven her sister for accepting.

"He's going to regret it," Simone muttered.

Aaliyah stopped working.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

"Nothing.""

"Simone.""

"Just finish your cake, Aaliyah.""

Aaliyah turned toward the counter to retrieve another decorating tool.

That was when Simone moved.

She stepped behind the cake stand.

Placed both hands against the silver base.

And shoved.

Hard.

The cake tilted.

For one terrible second, the three tiers seemed to hang in the air.

Then gravity took over.

The entire structure crashed sideways into the stainless-steel sink.

A heavy thud echoed through the bakery.

Buttercream splattered across the counter. Sugar flowers shattered against the metal basin. One tier slid onto the floor, its beautiful pearl decorations disappearing beneath a mess of frosting and broken cake.

Aaliyah spun around.

The white garden rose was still in her hand.

Her mouth fell open.

Then she looked at Simone.

"SIMONE!""

Simone raised both hands.

"Oops. Slipped.""

Aaliyah stared at the wreckage.

Then at the cake sketch.

Then back at her stepsister.

"Tomorrow is my wedding!""

Simone shrugged.

"I said I slipped.""

"You pushed it!""

"Don't start screaming at me.""

Footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Warren appeared first, followed by Monique.

"What happened?"" Warren demanded.

Aaliyah pointed at the sink.

"Look at it! Simone pushed the entire cake!""

Monique immediately moved in front of her daughter.

"Watch your tone.""

Aaliyah stared at her.

"Are you serious?""

"Don't speak to Simone like she's some criminal.""

"She just destroyed my wedding cake!""

Monique examined the sink.

Then she glanced at Simone.

"Accidents happen.""

Aaliyah looked at her father.

"Dad, you saw how hard she pushed it. She did it on purpose!""

Warren rubbed his forehead.

"Aaliyah, calm down.""

"Calm down?""

"Just order another cake.""

Aaliyah's fingers tightened around the sugar rose.

"Another cake? Dad, I made this one. I spent three days preparing it.""

"Then you should have ordered one from somewhere else.""

The words landed harder than the cake had.

Aaliyah waited.

She waited for him to look at Simone and ask why she had done it.

She waited for him to defend the daughter who had spent years helping in his bakery.

Instead, Warren picked up his phone.

Monique touched his arm.

"Come on, Warren. Let her cool off.""

Simone stepped closer to Aaliyah.

Her voice dropped low enough that only her sister could hear.

"Marcus is going to be embarrassed tomorrow.""

Aaliyah didn't move.

Simone tilted her head.

"He should have chosen me. He was always supposed to choose me.""

Aaliyah finally understood.

This wasn't about the cake.

It had never been about the cake.

Monique took Simone by the arm.

"Let's go, baby.""

Warren followed them.

Nobody offered to clean the sink.

Nobody picked up the broken sugar flowers.

Nobody asked Aaliyah if she was okay.

The bakery door closed.

And just like that, she was alone.

For several minutes, Aaliyah remained standing in the middle of the kitchen.

Her hand slowly opened.

The sugar rose dropped onto the counter.

She sat down on a wooden stool and stared at the ruined cake.

Her eyes burned.

She pressed both palms against her face.

She had imagined tomorrow so many times.

Marcus seeing the cake.

His mother smiling.

Her father standing beside her.

A photograph of the two of them cutting the first slice.

Now all she could see was a pile of buttercream in a stainless-steel sink.

She cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for the tears to fall onto her apron.

Then she looked at the sketch.

The beautiful design she had spent hours planning was still there.

Untouched.

Aaliyah wiped her cheeks.

She stood up.

Rolled her shoulders.

And slowly pushed her sleeves toward her elbows.

"Okay," she whispered.

Her voice was different now.

"Okay.""

She picked up the ruined sketch, smoothed its corners, and placed it carefully inside a folder.

Then she looked at the empty cake stand.

"Let's see what I can do.""

May you like

But Aaliyah had no idea that the destruction of that cake was about to reveal something much bigger than Simone's jealousy.

And the first clue was waiting in a box she hadn't opened in years.
