Chapter 4: The Cake They Never Expected to See
Simone couldn't move.
Through the bakery window, she could see the enormous midnight-blue wedding cake standing inside the delivery vehicle. Its gold decorations caught the morning sunlight, and the white sugar roses looked almost too delicate to be real.
Five tiers.
Aaliyah had made five tiers.
Simone slowly turned toward Warren.
"She made another one?""
Warren glanced through the window.
"Apparently.""
Monique adjusted her earrings.
"Well, that's good. At least we won't have to deal with a last-minute disaster.""
Simone's mouth tightened.
"That's not what I meant.""
"What did you mean?"" Monique asked.
Simone pointed toward the cake.
"Look at it!""
Warren shrugged.
"It's a cake, Simone.""
"It's better than the first one.""
"Then why are you complaining?""
Simone stared at him.
Because he didn't understand.
He never understood.
She had expected Aaliyah to spend the morning panicking, begging someone to help, or calling a professional bakery to order something ordinary.
Instead, her stepsister had created something that looked like it belonged in a luxury wedding magazine.
And she had done it without their help.
Simone pulled open the bakery door.
The bell above it rang.
Aaliyah looked up from the delivery vehicle.
Her expression remained calm.
"Good morning.""
Simone walked inside.
"Where did you get that cake?""
Aaliyah glanced toward the five-tier masterpiece.
"I made it.""
"Since when?""
"Since last night.""
Simone laughed sharply.
"Don't lie.""
Tasha stepped between them.
"She worked all night. I was here.""
Simone ignored her.
"You expect me to believe you made five tiers in one night?""
Aaliyah wiped her hands on a clean towel.
"I don't need you to believe anything.""
Monique entered behind Simone.
"Well, at least somebody was responsible enough to fix the situation.""
Aaliyah turned toward her.
"Fix what situation?""
Monique waved her hand toward the cake.
"The mess from last night.""
"Last night wasn't a situation. It was an act of sabotage.""
Warren stepped forward.
"Enough, Aaliyah.""
She looked at him.
"Did you come here to apologize?""
He frowned.
"For what?""
"For watching Simone destroy my wedding cake and then telling me to order another one.""
Warren glanced toward Monique.
"We've discussed this.""
"No, Dad. You decided it wasn't important enough to discuss.""
Monique crossed her arms.
"Your father has enough responsibilities without being dragged into another argument between you two.""
Aaliyah looked directly at her.
"Then perhaps you should teach your daughter not to destroy other people's work.""
Simone's face flushed.
"I told you it was an accident!""
Tasha let out a disbelieving laugh.
"With both hands?""
"Stay out of it, Tasha!""
Aaliyah raised one hand.
"Stop.""
The room fell silent.
She walked toward the cake and carefully inspected the protective covering.
"Today is my wedding. I'm not spending another minute arguing about what happened yesterday.""
Warren nodded as if satisfied.
"Good. That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Aaliyah turned.
"But don't mistake my decision to move forward for forgiveness.""
His expression changed.
She picked up her handbag.
"Everything is ready. The cake will arrive at the venue before the guests.""
Monique looked at the cake again.
"Your father can help you transport it.""
"No, thank you. Tasha is coming with me.""
Warren's jaw tightened.
"I'm your father.""
Aaliyah held his gaze.
"Then you should have acted like it.""
Nobody spoke.
Tasha quietly opened the delivery vehicle's side door.
Aaliyah climbed inside to check the cake one final time.
Simone remained near the entrance, staring at the gold patterns.
Then she noticed something.
A small inscription beneath the bottom tier.
It was written in delicate gold lettering.
*Built with love. Protected by courage.*
Simone read it twice.
Her stomach tightened.
"What's that supposed to mean?""
Aaliyah looked over her shoulder.
"It's for me.""
Simone scoffed.
"Everything has to be about you.""
Aaliyah gently closed the vehicle door.
"Today, yes.""
She climbed into the driver's seat.
Tasha settled into the passenger seat.
As the engine started, Aaliyah glanced once through the windshield.
Warren was standing with his hands on his hips.
Monique was whispering something to Simone.
And Simone was still staring at the cake.
Aaliyah turned away.
The vehicle pulled out of the parking space.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Tasha burst out laughing.
"Did you see Simone's face?""
Aaliyah smiled.
"I saw it.""
"She looked like somebody had stolen her birthday.""
Aaliyah kept her eyes on the road.
"Let her look.""
Tasha turned toward her.
"You're really not going to tell Marcus what happened?""
"I'll tell him after the ceremony.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to get married today without giving my family another opportunity to ruin something.""
Tasha nodded.
"Fair enough.""
They drove toward the waterfront venue where the ceremony and reception would take place.
The ballroom was decorated in ivory and gold, with tall windows overlooking the harbor. White roses covered the tables, and soft instrumental music played through the sound system.
When the event coordinator, Denise, saw the cake being unloaded, she hurried toward them.
"Please tell me that's the wedding cake.""
Aaliyah smiled.
"It is.""
Denise stopped walking.
"Oh, my goodness.""
She circled the display stand.
"Who designed this?""
"I did.""
Denise stared at her.
"You made this?""
"Yes.""
Denise looked at the cake again.
Then she pulled out her phone.
"I need to take a photograph before anyone touches it.""
Aaliyah laughed.
"Go ahead.""
The coordinator snapped several pictures.
"This is going to be the most beautiful centerpiece we've had in this ballroom all year.""
Tasha gave Aaliyah a knowing look.
Aaliyah simply smiled.
They carefully positioned the cake near the center of the reception hall.
The ballroom lights reflected against the gold details.
It was magnificent.
And soon, everyone would see it.
But Aaliyah didn't know that Simone had already started making another plan.
May you like
Because as the sisters prepared for the wedding, Simone was sending a message to someone who had access to the reception hall.
And this time, she wasn't planning to use her hands.
