Chapter 9: The Daughter They Tried to Steal
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly stood, keeping one hand on Lily's shoulder.
He looked at Eleanor.
“Is Daniel telling the truth?””
His mother didn't answer.
“Mom. Look at me.””
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
“Lily is your granddaughter?””
Eleanor nodded.
“No. Not exactly.””
Daniel laughed.
“Why don't you tell him everything?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“I'm sorry.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Don't you dare.””
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“Evelyn, please. I need to understand.””
She took a trembling breath.
“Lily was born five years ago. I was pregnant with her, but I suffered complications during delivery.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
He remembered the hospital.
He remembered being told that Evelyn had nearly died.
He remembered holding a tiny baby while a nurse explained that his wife needed several days of recovery.
Evelyn continued.
“When I woke up, the doctors told me Lily had been taken to the neonatal unit. But I couldn't see her.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Your mother said the baby needed specialized care.””
Eleanor began crying.
“I was trying to prevent a scandal.””
Evelyn's voice rose.
“What scandal?””
Eleanor looked at Marcus.
“Your father had arranged a private adoption.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“Your father believed that the Bennett family needed an heir. He had discovered that you might never have children because of a medical condition you suffered as a teenager.””
Marcus felt sick.
That was true.
Years earlier, doctors had warned him that having biological children might be difficult.
But he had never considered that information relevant to his marriage.
Eleanor continued.
“When Evelyn gave birth, Richard believed the baby was a miracle. But he also feared that if the child wasn't biologically related to you, the family inheritance could become complicated.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Lily is my daughter.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She is. Richard arranged for a DNA test without telling us. He claimed the hospital had made a mistake.””
Daniel interrupted.
“And the test showed something interesting.””
Evelyn turned toward him.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored her.
“The child was not biologically related to either Marcus or Evelyn.””
Marcus looked down at Lily.
The little girl was watching the adults with frightened eyes.
Evelyn knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, go sit with Margaret for a moment.””
Lily hesitated.
“Are you going to leave again?””
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
“Never without telling you.””
Margaret took Lily's hand and led her toward the sitting room.
Once she was gone, Evelyn continued.
“Richard had arranged for a baby to be brought into the hospital under a false identity. He wanted Marcus to believe the child was his biological daughter.””
Marcus stared at his father.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because the baby had been born to a woman who died during childbirth. She had no surviving family, and Richard had secretly arranged everything through a private medical foundation.””
Daniel smirked.
“Very convenient, wasn't it?””
Evelyn glared at him.
“Richard thought he could control everyone's lives.””
Marcus turned toward Eleanor.
“And Vanessa?””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Vanessa was the nurse who handled the transfer.””
The truth began falling into place.
Vanessa had been inside the hospital when Lily was born.
She had helped Richard arrange the adoption.
She had later become Marcus's assistant.
And eventually, she had positioned herself to become his wife.
But something still didn't make sense.
“Why did Vanessa want to marry me?””
Eleanor looked toward Daniel.
“Because she wanted access to the family trust.””
Marcus frowned.
“Daniel told me she was his wife.””
Daniel laughed.
“Not legally.””
Eleanor continued.
“Vanessa had been working with Daniel for years. They planned to use Lily's adoption records to blackmail Richard. But when Evelyn discovered the truth, everything changed.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I found the original hospital documents. I also found a recording of Richard admitting that he had arranged the transfer.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“And that's why they imprisoned you.””
“Yes.””
He looked toward Daniel.
“Where is Vanessa now?””
Detective Harris answered.
“She was taken to the station.””
Daniel suddenly smiled.
“Then you haven't heard the best part.””
He reached into his folder and removed a small USB drive.
“Vanessa kept a copy of the original hospital footage.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because I want something.””
“What?””
“Immunity.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“That's not something you can negotiate here.””
Daniel ignored him.
“I'll give you the footage, the financial records, and the location of the original trust documents. In exchange, I want protection.””
Marcus stared.
“You expect me to help you after everything you've done?””
Daniel shrugged.
“I expect you to understand that we're family.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You tried to destroy my wife.””
“I tried to protect the company.””
“You tried to take my daughter.””
Daniel's smile faded.
“She was never yours.””
Marcus grabbed him by the collar.
“Say that again.””
Detective Harris immediately separated them.
“That's enough!””
Daniel straightened his jacket.
Then he looked toward Evelyn.
“You still haven't told him about the second recording.””
Evelyn went pale.
Marcus turned.
“What second recording?””
Daniel smiled.
“The one Richard made the night he died.””
Marcus frowned.
“You said Dad was alive.””
“He is.””
“Then what does a recording of his death have to do with anything?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Because the man who died that night wasn't your father.””
Marcus stared.
Daniel pointed toward the photograph in Margaret's folder.
“Look at the man standing beside Vanessa.””
Marcus examined it.
The photograph showed three people.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And Richard.
But now that he looked carefully, something seemed wrong.
The man wearing his father's watch had a different scar on his chin.
Marcus remembered his father's scar.
A small white line beneath his left ear.
It wasn't there.
He looked up.
“Who is that man?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“His identical twin brother.””
Marcus froze.
“My father had a twin?””
Eleanor nodded.
“His name was Robert.””
“Where is he?””
Daniel smiled.
“Dead.””
Evelyn suddenly grabbed Marcus's hand.
“Marcus, don't listen to him. Your father is alive, but Robert wasn't the only person who disappeared.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She reached into her pocket and removed a folded piece of paper.
It was a hospital discharge document.
The name at the top was unfamiliar.
But the date was recent.
Only three weeks earlier.
Marcus read the name twice.
*PATIENT: RICHARD BENNETT.*
Underneath, someone had written:
*TRANSFERRED TO PRIVATE CARE FACILITY — AUTHORIZED BY MARCUS BENNETT.*
He stared.
“I never signed this.””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“I know.””
Then she pointed to the signature.
“Look at the handwriting.””
Marcus leaned closer.
It was his signature.
Perfectly copied.
And beneath it was a second line.
*PATIENT'S NEXT OF KIN: LILY BENNETT.*
Before Marcus could process the document, his phone rang again.
An unfamiliar voice answered when he picked up.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Dr. Collins. I'm calling from Westbrook Private Medical Center.””
Marcus's heart began pounding.
“What happened?””
“Your father has just regained consciousness.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Is he okay?””
There was a pause.
Then the doctor spoke.
“Mr. Bennett, there's something you need to know.””
“What?””
“Your father has been asking for his granddaughter.””
Marcus looked toward the sitting room where Lily was waiting.
Then the doctor added:
“He says the little girl currently living in your house is not the child he arranged to bring home five years ago.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
“Then who is she?””
The doctor lowered his voice.
“Mr. Bennett, according to the original medical records, your daughter was never transferred out of the hospital.””
Marcus stared at Lily through the doorway.
The little girl looked back at him.
And smiled.

Then the doctor said the words that shattered everything Marcus thought he knew.
“Someone switched the babies before the adoption was completed.””
