Chapter 6: The Confession That Never Happened
The police arrived seven minutes later.
Two patrol cars pulled through the mansion gates, followed by a black sedan.
Marcus stood beside Evelyn and Lily on the terrace.
Richard waited near the entrance, holding his briefcase.
A tall officer approached.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“I'm Detective Harris. We received a report of a possible kidnapping, unlawful confinement, and child endangerment.””
Marcus pointed toward the maintenance entrance.
“My wife has been held beneath this property for almost two years.””
Detective Harris looked at Evelyn.
“Ma'am, are you Mrs. Evelyn Bennett?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Do you have identification?””
She reached into her cardigan and produced an old driver's license.
The detective examined it.
Then he looked at Richard.
“Who reported this incident?””
Richard stepped forward.
“My client, Daniel Bennett. He believes his brother may be suffering from a psychological breakdown.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Your client?””
Richard nodded.
“Daniel is deeply concerned.””
“Then tell Daniel to come here and say it to my face.””
Detective Harris raised a hand.
“Let's keep this calm.””
Richard opened his briefcase again.
“I have a sworn statement from Mrs. Bennett, dated two years ago. It states that she voluntarily abandoned her husband and child.””
Evelyn's expression changed.
“That's not my statement.””
Richard handed the document to the detective.
“It includes her signature.””
Evelyn looked at it.
Then she began shaking.
“I've never seen that.””
Marcus took the paper.
The signature looked convincing.
Even the handwriting seemed familiar.
But Evelyn had noticed something else.
“The date,” she whispered.
Marcus looked at her.
“What about it?””
“I was already locked underground when this was signed.””
Richard smiled.
“That's a serious accusation.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“You visited me.””
The smile disappeared.
Detective Harris looked up.
“Excuse me?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You came to the chamber. You brought those papers. You told me that if I signed them, they would let me see Lily.””
Richard's face hardened.
“That's absurd.””
“You told me Marcus had moved on. You said Vanessa was going to become Lily's mother.””
“Ma'am, you're clearly confused.””
Evelyn raised her voice.
“I remember your watch!””
Richard instinctively pulled his sleeve down.
Marcus noticed.
So did the detective.
“Sir,” Detective Harris said, “may I see your wrist?””
Richard looked offended.
“Excuse me?””
“Your wristwatch.””
“Is this really necessary?””
“Right now, yes.””
Richard slowly pushed back his sleeve.
A silver watch appeared.
Evelyn stared at it.
“That one.””
Detective Harris looked at Marcus.
“Do you have a reason to believe this woman was held against her will?””
Marcus pointed toward the garden entrance.
“There's an underground chamber. You'll find the lock, the medical supplies, the wheelchair, and everything else down there.””
The detective immediately called another officer.
“Secure the maintenance entrance. Nobody enters or leaves until we've checked it.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You cannot search private property without proper authorization.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“I'm responding to a reported kidnapping. We have reasonable grounds to investigate.””
As the officers moved toward the garden, Marcus's phone rang.
Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
His brother sounded furious.
“What have you done?””
Marcus laughed without humor.
“What have I done? Your wife imprisoned Evelyn!””
Daniel went silent.
Then he said:
“Bring Lily to the office.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“No.””
“Marcus, listen to me. The documents are real. You signed them.””
“I didn't authorize anyone to take my daughter.””
“You authorized me to protect her if you became incapacitated.””
“Why would I do that?””
“Because you were drinking. Because you were unstable. Because you couldn't function after Evelyn disappeared!””
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“Tell me about Dad.””
Daniel stopped talking.
Marcus continued.
“Evelyn says he was murdered. She says you and Vanessa were stealing from the company.””
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel spoke quietly.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Did you kill him?””
Daniel's voice rose.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep this family together!””
“Did you kill our father?””
“He was going to destroy us!””
The words hung in the air.
Marcus stared at the phone.
Daniel seemed to realize what he had said.
“Marcus—”
The call disconnected.
Detective Harris had heard the final sentence.
He approached.
“Who was that?””
“My brother.””
“What did he just say?””
Marcus looked at him.
“He said our father was going to destroy them.””
The detective exchanged a glance with his partner.
“Can you get him on the phone again?””
Before Marcus could answer, a commotion erupted near the garden gate.
An officer was leading Vanessa toward the terrace.
Her hands were cuffed.
Her cream-colored dress was now stained with dirt, and her hair had come loose.
She looked directly at Marcus.
“You did this.””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa turned toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, come here.””
Lily immediately hid behind Evelyn.
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“Lily, don't be afraid. I'm still your mother figure.””
Evelyn pulled her daughter closer.
“No. You're not.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think you can just come back and take everything?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You're under arrest.””
Vanessa looked at him with cold eyes.
“You don't understand. Daniel has already taken care of everything.””
“Not anymore.””
She leaned closer as the officer guided her past him.
“Ask Evelyn what happened after you left the boathouse that night.””
Marcus froze.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
Vanessa continued.
“She knows why you don't remember.””
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“Evelyn?””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“Marcus, I wanted to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
She looked toward Lily, then back at him.
“The night you disappeared from the boathouse, you weren't alone.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn took his hand.
“You were unconscious. Daniel had hit you. I tried to get you out, but Vanessa arrived with two men.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Then what happened?””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“They put you in the car. They told me you were dead.””
Marcus shook his head.
“But I'm standing here.””
“Yes. Because someone saved you.””
“Who?””
Evelyn looked toward the driveway.
A second vehicle had just entered the property.
An elderly woman stepped out.
She wore a dark coat and held a wooden walking stick.
Marcus recognized her instantly.
It was Margaret, his father's former housekeeper.
He hadn't seen her in nearly three years.
She walked slowly toward him, tears streaming down her face.
“Mr. Bennett,” she whispered.
Marcus stared.
“Margaret? What are you doing here?””
She looked at Evelyn.
Then at Lily.
Finally, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
“Your father asked me to give you this if anything ever happened to Evelyn.””
Marcus took it.
His father's handwriting was unmistakable.
On the front were four words:
*TO MY SON, MARCUS.*
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel standing beside Vanessa.
Behind them stood another man.
A man Marcus recognized from the family business.
His own father.
But the photograph had been taken six months after the date on his father's death certificate.
Marcus looked up, horrified.
“Margaret…”
The old woman nodded.
“Your father is alive, Mr. Bennett.””
May you like
Then she leaned closer and whispered:
“And he's the one who ordered Evelyn's disappearance.””
