Chapter 8: The Family Secret Behind the Disappearance

Marcus couldn't move.

His mother, Eleanor Bennett, had supposedly died twelve years earlier from complications following surgery.

He remembered the hospital room.

He remembered holding her hand.

He remembered the funeral.

Yet there she stood, wearing a white coat, her dark hair streaked with silver.

“Hello, Marcus,” she said.

His phone slipped from his fingers.

“Mom?””

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“It's been a long time.””

Marcus looked at Margaret.

The old housekeeper's face had turned pale.

“You knew?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No. I swear.””

Daniel closed the front door behind him.

“Let's stop pretending. We all know this family has never been very good at telling the truth.””

Detective Harris immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel Bennett, stay where you are.””

Daniel raised both hands.

“Of course, Detective.””

Eleanor walked toward Marcus.

He instinctively stepped backward.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

“Marcus, I understand you're confused.””

“Confused?””

His voice broke.

“I buried you.””

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead!””

“I had to disappear.””

“Everyone in this family seems to have a reason for disappearing!””

Daniel laughed.

“That's because some people know when to leave before the consequences arrive.””

Detective Harris moved between them.

“Both of you will need to explain yourselves at the station.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Certainly. But first, Marcus deserves to know why his wife was kept alive.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I already know why. Because I found the recording.””

Eleanor's expression changed.

For the first time, the calm mask slipped.

“What recording?””

Evelyn held up the black device.

“The one Richard made before he died.””

Daniel's smile vanished.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

He took a step toward her.

The detective immediately drew his weapon.

“Stop!””

Daniel froze.

Eleanor looked at Evelyn.

“You shouldn't have kept that.””

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Why? Because it proves what happened to Richard?””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Dad said you were dead. Margaret said he was dead. Now everyone is alive except the man who actually died.””

Eleanor lowered her head.

“Your father was a complicated man.””

“What happened to him?””

She looked at Daniel.

He gave a slight nod.

Then Eleanor began speaking.

“Richard discovered that Daniel was using the family company to move money through illegal offshore accounts. He threatened to report him. Your father wanted to protect you, Marcus, but he was also afraid that the scandal would destroy the Bennett name.””

Marcus frowned.

“So he faked his death?””

“Yes.””

“And yours?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I helped him.””

Marcus looked disgusted.

“Why?””

“Because I knew Daniel was dangerous.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That's enough, Mother.””

Eleanor ignored him.

“Richard arranged for me to disappear. He believed that if Daniel thought both parents were dead, he would stop searching for us.””

Marcus laughed.

“But Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“And instead of telling me, you let me live with a woman who imprisoned my wife?””

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“I didn't know about Vanessa until much later.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I saw her.””

Eleanor frowned.

“When?””

“Three months after I was locked underground. You came to the chamber with Daniel.””

Eleanor's face went pale.

“You were unconscious.””

“No. I was awake.””

Evelyn's voice grew stronger.

“You told Daniel that the girl was beginning to ask questions. You told him Lily needed to be sent away.””

Marcus turned toward his mother.

“What girl?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Lily.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What were you planning to do to my daughter?””

Eleanor began crying.

“I wanted to protect her.””

“From what?””

“From this family!””

The words came out louder than she intended.

She covered her mouth.

Then she continued.

“Your father had hidden documents inside the house. Documents that could destroy everyone. Daniel wanted them.

Vanessa wanted them. And Evelyn had discovered where they were.””

Marcus stared.

“Where?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father's study.””

Marcus remembered the room.

It had remained untouched since Richard's supposed death.

Nobody had been allowed inside.

Even the housekeepers had been instructed to keep the door locked.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know if the documents were still there.””

Daniel suddenly laughed.

“You're all wasting your time.””

He reached into his leather folder and removed a single sheet of paper.

“Here's the truth.””

He held it up.

It was a birth certificate.

Marcus took one look at it.

Then his face changed.

The document listed Lily's biological parents.

Marcus Bennett.

And Vanessa Cole.

He looked at Evelyn.

She began crying.

“No…”

Daniel smiled.

“Congratulations, Marcus. You've spent five years raising a child who isn't yours.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

Eleanor spoke quietly.

“It's true.””

Evelyn grabbed Marcus's arm.

“Don't listen to them.””

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn was pregnant when she disappeared. But the baby wasn't yours.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“Is that true?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

“No.””

Daniel held up another document.

“This is a DNA report.””

Marcus stared at the page.

A result was circled in red.

PARENTAGE EXCLUSION.

He looked at Lily.

The little girl was standing beside Margaret, clutching her pink rabbit.

His daughter.

The child he had raised.

The child who had run to him beside the swimming pool.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Now do you understand why Evelyn had to disappear?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Lily's real mother.””

Evelyn suddenly shouted.

“THAT IS A LIE!””

The detective moved toward Daniel.

But before anyone could stop him, Daniel pulled a second document from the folder.

He placed it in front of Marcus.

It was a hospital record.

The date matched Lily's birth.

And beside the infant's name was a handwritten note:

*BABY TRANSFERRED TO PRIVATE ADOPTION UNIT.*

Marcus felt dizzy.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Where did Lily come from?””

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Then the little girl spoke.

“Daddy?””

Marcus turned.

Lily was crying.

“Am I not your daughter anymore?””

His heart shattered.

He immediately dropped to his knees and opened his arms.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Lily ran into him.

He held her tightly.

“You will always be my daughter. Do you hear me?””

Daniel watched them.

Then he leaned toward Marcus.

“That's touching. But there's one more thing you should know.””

Marcus looked up.

Daniel smiled.

“Lily's biological mother is standing right here.””

He pointed at Vanessa's empty place on the police report.

May you like

Then he looked directly at Eleanor.

And Marcus understood that the biggest secret in his family had not yet been revealed.
