Chapter 7: The Father Who Was Never Dead

Marcus read the photograph again.

His father.

Alive.

Standing beside Daniel and Vanessa.

The date printed beneath the image was six months after the funeral.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.

Then he grabbed Margaret's arm.

“Where is he?””

The elderly woman looked toward the mansion.

“Somewhere you were never supposed to find him.””

“Margaret, stop speaking in riddles. Where is my father?””

She swallowed.

“An estate outside Santa Barbara. He's been living there under another name.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered that Daniel had been stealing from the company. He planned to report him. But Daniel found out first.””

“And Vanessa?””

Margaret nodded.

“She helped them.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Margaret, you told me he was dead.””

“I believed he was.””

“You watched me get locked underground!””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

“You could have helped me!””

“I tried.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You tried?””

Margaret reached into her handbag and removed a second envelope.

“I was the one who brought you food during the first three months. I was the one who left blankets outside your door. I was also the person who gave you the little silver key Lily found.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You knew?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never saw her face. Someone came at night. I thought it was another guard.””

Margaret nodded.

“I couldn't openly help you. Daniel had people watching me. But I kept copies of everything.””

She handed Marcus a thick folder.

Inside were photographs, bank statements, medical reports, and handwritten notes.

Marcus flipped through the pages.

One photograph showed Daniel shaking hands with a private security contractor.

Another showed Vanessa entering a bank carrying a large suitcase.

Then he reached a document bearing his father's signature.

It was a medical certificate declaring Richard Bennett deceased.

The date was five years earlier.

Marcus looked at Margaret.

“This is forged?””

“Yes.””

“Who signed it?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Your father.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“He arranged his own disappearance after Daniel threatened him. He believed that if the world thought he was dead, Daniel would stop looking for him.””

Marcus shook his head.

“So he abandoned us?””

“He was afraid.””

“Afraid?”” Marcus's voice cracked.

“I buried an empty coffin. I watched my daughter cry because she thought she'd lost her grandfather. And he was alive?””

Margaret didn't answer.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared, your father called me.””

Marcus froze.

“Why?””

“He said he had evidence that Daniel was planning to kill him. He asked me to meet him at the boathouse.””

“And you went?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked down.

“When I arrived, I found you unconscious. Daniel was standing over you. Vanessa was holding a syringe.””

Marcus felt sick.

“What happened after that?””

“Daniel told me you had discovered the financial fraud. He said if I helped him get rid of the evidence, he would let you live.””

Marcus clenched his fists.

“So you agreed?””

“I pretended to.””

She looked at Lily.

“I was trying to save you both.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

For the first time, he understood that Evelyn hadn't simply been a victim.

She had been fighting to survive while protecting him and their daughter.

A police officer approached.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to take everyone to the station for statements.””

Marcus nodded.

But Margaret raised a hand.

“Not yet.””

Detective Harris, who had been reviewing the documents, looked up.

“Ma'am, we need to establish what's going on.””

Margaret pointed to the final page in the folder.

“Look at the transfer dates.””

Detective Harris examined the document.

His expression changed.

“What am I looking at?””

“Payments made to the company that maintained the underground chamber.””

Marcus leaned over his shoulder.

The transfers had continued every month for twenty-two months.

The last payment had been made that morning.

The recipient was listed as a company called Bennett Private Holdings.

Marcus recognized the account number.

It belonged to the family trust.

His father had created it.

“Someone has been funding this entire operation using my father's trust,” he whispered.

Margaret nodded.

“And someone has been withdrawing money from it every month.””

Detective Harris looked at the officer beside him.

“Get a warrant request started. We need financial investigators.””

Then Marcus's phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a number he hadn't seen in five years.

*DAD.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

His fingers trembled.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice came through.

“Marcus.””

His knees nearly gave way.

“Dad?””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard Bennett spoke.

“My son. I know what Margaret has told you.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you let me bury you?””

His father sighed.

“Because I had no choice.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You let them imprison my wife.””

“I didn't know where she was.””

“You funded the chamber!””

“I was trying to contain the situation.””

Marcus's voice rose.

“You knew she was alive!””

Another silence.

Then Richard said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.

“Listen to me carefully. Daniel is not the person you should be afraid of.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

His father lowered his voice.

“Vanessa has a second family. And the man she calls her husband isn't Daniel.””

Marcus felt the ground disappear beneath him.

“Then who is he?””

Richard answered.

“Your father's voice came through the phone.””

“Your brother-in-law, Marcus. The man who helped raise Lily before I disappeared.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

Evelyn slowly shook her head.

“That's impossible.””

Then a loud crash sounded from inside the mansion.

Everyone turned.

The front door had been forced open.

A man stepped into the hallway.

He was carrying a black leather folder.

And he was smiling.

It was Daniel.

But he wasn't alone.

May you like

Behind him stood a woman Marcus had never expected to see again.

His mother.
