Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Final Order

I watched the video again.

Then again.

And again.

Every time, the same words echoed in my mind.

“Don’t let me remember.””

My own voice.

My own face.

My own decision.

But I didn’t remember making it.

That terrified me more than any enemy ever had.

I looked at Ryan.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The answer cut deeper than I expected.

“You knew I had gaps in my memory.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone changed what I remembered.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Because you asked me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Sarah looked down.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Explain.””

He took a slow breath.

“The night you woke up in the hospital, you were different.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

Ryan’s voice was quiet.

“You remembered enough to know something had happened. You knew someone had betrayed the team. But every time you got close to the truth, you panicked.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t panic.””

“You did then.””

The words bothered me because I knew Ryan.

He wasn’t trying to insult me.

He was telling me something painful.

“You begged me to hide your memories.””

I looked away.

“No.””

“You told me if you ever tried to uncover Nightfall again, I had to stop you.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Why would I say that?””

Ryan looked at Sarah.

She answered.

“Because you discovered what happened.””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Sarah walked toward the table and opened the folder again.

Inside were pages of notes.

Handwritten notes.

My handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

The first page had a sentence at the top.

*Nightfall was never an operation. It was a filter.*

I read the next lines.

They were my words.

My thoughts.

My investigation.

“The people behind Nightfall weren’t looking for information,” I whispered.

Ryan nodded.

“They were looking for people.””

I looked up.

“What people?””

“People who would follow orders without questioning.””

Sarah continued.

“They created impossible situations. They watched who obeyed. Who sacrificed others.

Who protected civilians. Who broke.””

I turned the page.

The notes continued.

*The mission wasn’t compromised by one person. The entire command structure was.*

My hands became cold.

I looked at Ryan.

“So you weren’t the traitor.””

“No.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Neither were you.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Nobody spoke.

The answer was already there.

The person controlling Nightfall wasn’t one of us.

It was someone above us.

Someone with access to everything.

The colonel’s voice suddenly came through the communication device on the desk.

“Captain Carter.””

I grabbed it.

“Colonel.””

His voice sounded tense.

“We have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“Someone accessed the classified archive.””

My expression changed.

“When?””

“Five minutes ago.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Who?””

The colonel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your access code.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

“Emily, your credentials opened the archive.””

I looked at my hands.

Someone had been using my identity.

Again.

The colonel continued.

“Security footage shows someone entering the archive room.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Captain Carter.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“The person on camera is you.””

The line went quiet.

I looked at Ryan.

At Sarah.

Neither looked surprised.

That scared me.

“You think I did this?””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why does everyone keep seeing me?””

Sarah spoke softly.

“Because that’s what they want.””

I closed my eyes.

A pattern.

A carefully built pattern.

Every clue pointed toward me.

Every piece of evidence blamed me.

Someone wasn’t hiding the truth.

They were rewriting it.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where is the archive?””

Ryan stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“This is exactly what they want.””

“I know.””

“Then why go alone?””

I looked at him.

“Because if someone is using my identity, I need to see what they’re trying to make me find.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Emily.””

I looked at her.

“Be careful.””

The concern in her voice surprised me.

For a moment, I saw the old Sarah.

The one who saved people.

The one I remembered.

Then she added:

“Because the person who set this up knows you better than anyone.””

I walked out.

The archive building was empty.

Too empty.

The security cameras followed my movement.

I entered the restricted room.

My access worked.

That alone disturbed me.

Inside was a single file waiting on the table.

No lock.

No protection.

Like someone wanted me to open it.

The folder had my name.

*CARTER, EMILY — NIGHTFALL FINAL REPORT*

My hands trembled slightly.

Because I had never seen this report.

I opened it.

The first page contained one sentence.

*Final subject evaluation: Emily Carter exceeded expectations.*

Subject.

Not soldier.

Not captain.

Subject.

I turned the page.

The next line made my entire body freeze.

*Phase One complete. Subject believes she survived.*

I stopped.

The word repeated in my mind.

Subject.

Believes.

I kept reading.

*Phase Two begins when subject returns to Fort Grayson.*

A noise came from behind me.

I turned.

The colonel stood in the doorway.

But his face wasn’t angry.

It was afraid.

“Emily.””

I held up the file.

“What is this?””

He looked at the pages.

Then whispered:

“You were never investigating Nightfall.””

My grip tightened.

“Then what was I doing?””

May you like

The colonel stared at me.

“You were finishing it.””
