Chapter 7: The Friend Who Became the Enemy
For six years, I had replayed Sarah Mitchell’s final moments in my mind.
The explosion.
The smoke.
The desperate radio calls.
The last time I heard her voice.
I remembered the way Ryan had shouted her name.
I remembered believing she was gone.
I remembered carrying the guilt of surviving when she didn’t.
But she was standing ten feet away from me.
Alive.
Calm.
And looking at me like we had simply crossed paths after a long weekend.
“You’re alive,” I whispered.
Sarah smiled faintly.
“So are you.””
The words felt heavier than they should have.
Ryan moved slightly in front of me.
A protective instinct.
Something I hadn’t seen from him in years.
“Sarah.””
She looked at him.
“Ryan.””
There was no surprise in her voice.
No anger.
No relief.
Only cold calculation.
I noticed that immediately.
The Sarah I knew had always been emotional.
She cared too much.
She argued too loudly.
She refused to leave anyone behind.
This woman was different.
“What happened to you?”” I asked.
Sarah looked at me.
“That’s what you want to ask?””
“Yes.””
She tilted her head.
“Not why I survived?””
I said nothing.
Because that was exactly what I wanted to know.
Ryan stepped forward.
“You were working with them.””
Sarah’s expression barely changed.
“Still blaming everyone except yourself?””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“I watched you disappear.””
“And you left me.””
The room became silent.
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Sarah laughed quietly.
“Of course he didn’t tell you.””
Ryan looked away.
I felt something inside me shift.
The truth was always like that.
It never arrived as one clean answer.
It came in pieces.
Sharp pieces.
Sarah walked toward the center of the training floor.
“Do you remember the extraction point?””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
“We were supposed to leave together.””
“Yes.””
She looked at Ryan.
“But the order changed.””
Ryan’s face hardened.
“Because the building was compromised.””
“No.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Because someone told you to leave me behind.””
My eyes moved to Ryan.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“Ryan.””
His voice lowered.
“Emily, listen—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Answer the question.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
“You left her?””
“I thought she was already gone.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“That’s convenient.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I went back.””
“After twenty minutes.””
“I had to get the team out.””
“You mean you had to protect the mission.””
The tension between them filled the room.
I hated that I understood both sides.
Because Nightfall had always been about impossible choices.
But something still didn’t make sense.
“If Sarah survived, why didn’t she return?””
Neither answered.
I looked at Sarah.
“Why?””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something human.
Pain.
“They didn’t let me.””
“Who?””
Sarah looked at Ryan.
“Ask him.””
I turned.
Ryan stayed silent.
My frustration grew.
“Everyone keeps giving me pieces of this story.””
I stepped closer.
“I deserve the whole truth.””
Sarah looked at me.
“Do you?””
That question bothered me.
Because it sounded like a warning.
She reached into the folder she carried.
Inside were documents.
Old reports.
Photographs.
Records.
She threw them onto a nearby table.
“You want the truth?””
I looked down.
The first page was a classified Nightfall document.
But the signature at the bottom made my heart stop.
My own name.
My authorization code.
My approval.
I stared at it.
“That’s impossible.””
Sarah watched me.
“You signed the order.””
“No.””
“You sent the team into that building.””
“No.””
“You killed them.””
The words echoed.
My hands tightened.
“I would never.””
Sarah’s expression softened slightly.
“That’s what I believed too.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“Don’t do this.””
Sarah ignored him.
“Emily, your memories of Nightfall are incomplete.””
My breathing slowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone altered the records.””
I looked at the papers.
“Why would they do that?””
Sarah stared directly at me.
“To make you think you were the victim.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“She’s manipulating you.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Am I?””
The room went quiet.
Because neither of them sounded like the person I remembered.
Both sounded like survivors.
Both sounded like they had been hurt.
And both believed they were telling the truth.
Then my phone vibrated.
I pulled it out.
Another message.
This time, from the same unknown number.
But the words were different.
*“Good. They are finally telling you enough.””*
My blood ran cold.
A second message appeared.
*“Now ask them why you survived.””*
I looked up.
Sarah and Ryan were watching me.
Neither looked surprised.
That scared me more than anything.
“Who sent this?”” I asked.
Ryan looked at Sarah.
Sarah looked at Ryan.
Then Sarah quietly said:
“You already know.””
I froze.
“No.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
The next words left me completely unprepared.
“The person sending those messages…”
May you like
She paused.
“Is you.””
