Chapter 5 - The Question Nicole Could Not Escape

The meeting took place the following Sunday afternoon.
Maya agreed to sit with Nicole in the kitchen, with Andre present.
She had chosen the room herself.
It was where the accusation happened.
She wanted the truth spoken in the same place.
Nicole arrived carrying nothing.
No flowers.
No gifts.
No carefully wrapped apology.
Andre had suggested that she not try to soften the conversation with presents.
Maya was already sitting at the table when Nicole entered.
Her school notebook lay closed beside her.
Nicole took the chair opposite her.
“Thank you for seeing me.”
Maya nodded.
For a moment, they sat in uncomfortable silence.
Then Nicole began.
“I bought the pregnancy test because I was late and frightened I might be pregnant again.”
Maya looked at her.
“I know.”
“Your father told you?”
“Yes.”
Nicole clasped her hands.
“I was afraid of what might happen. After losing the baby, I didn't know whether I could go through another pregnancy.”
Maya remained quiet.
Nicole took a breath.
“But being afraid didn't give me the right to lie about you.”
Maya stared at the table.
Nicole continued.
“I moved the box into the upstairs bathroom. I put it beside your things.”
Maya looked up.
“Why?”
Nicole swallowed.
“Because I thought if anyone noticed it, I could say it belonged to you.”
Maya's face tightened.
“You planned to blame me before you even came downstairs?”
Nicole nodded.
“Yes.”
Andre lowered his eyes.
Maya sat back.
She had known the facts.
Hearing Nicole admit them felt different.
“Did you think about what Dad would do?”
Nicole hesitated.
“I knew he'd question you.”
Maya's voice shook.
“Did you care?”
Nicole began crying.
“Yes.”
Maya shook her head.
“Then why did you do it?”
Nicole wiped her cheeks.
“Because I was thinking about protecting myself instead of protecting you.”
The words seemed to surprise even her.
For the first time, she wasn't calling it a misunderstanding.
She wasn't blaming the pregnancy scare.
She wasn't describing what happened as something that simply got out of control.
She was admitting that she had made a choice.
Maya looked toward her father.
“Dad, when she said I was pregnant, what were you thinking?”
Andre took a moment.
“I was worried you might be dealing with something serious and hiding it because you were afraid.”
“Did you believe me when I said I wasn't?”
Andre looked directly at her.
“No. Not the way I should have.”
Maya nodded.
“Thank you for saying that.”
Her eyes filled.
“I didn't need you to be perfect. I just needed you to know me.”
Andre's voice broke.
“I know, sweetheart.”
Nicole reached toward the tissue box but stopped.
She was beginning to understand that the conversation wasn't about finding a way to make Maya stop crying.
It was about allowing Maya to say what had happened without being interrupted or corrected.
Maya turned back to Nicole.
“Do you remember helping me with my science project?”
Nicole nodded.
“Of course.”
“You stayed up until almost midnight because the pump kept breaking.”
A faint smile appeared through Nicole's tears.
“I remember.”
Maya looked away.
“I thought you loved me.”
Nicole's expression collapsed.
“I do love you.”
“Then why was it so easy to hurt me?”
Nicole couldn't answer immediately.
“I let my fear become more important than how you would feel,” she finally said. “And that wasn't love in the way I should have shown it.”
Maya was silent.
Then she asked the question Nicole had been avoiding since the receipt appeared.
“If Grace and Jordan hadn't told Dad you bought that test, would you ever have admitted it was yours?”
Nicole looked at Andre.
He did not help her answer.
She looked back at Maya.
“I want to say yes.”
Maya waited.
Nicole took a shaky breath.
“But I don't know if I would have told the truth that night.”
A tear slid down Maya's cheek.
“That's what I thought.”
Nicole covered her face briefly.
“I'm sorry.”
Maya remained seated.
After a long silence, she said, “I don't forgive you yet.”
Nicole lowered her hands.
“I understand.”
“And I don't want you to keep asking me when I'm going to.”
“I won't.”
Maya nodded.
Then she stood.
“I need to go finish my homework.”
Nicole looked at her.
“Okay.”
Maya picked up her notebook.
At the doorway, she stopped.
“Nicole?”
“Yes?”
“I'm glad you finally told me the truth.”
Nicole's eyes filled again.
“Thank you for listening.”
Maya looked at her for another moment.
Then she left.
Andre and Nicole remained at the table.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Nicole said, “I thought if I explained why I panicked, she would understand.”
Andre looked toward the staircase.
“She does understand more now.”
Nicole turned toward him.
“Then why does it still feel like I've lost her?”
“Because understanding what hurt someone isn't the same as repairing it.”
Nicole lowered her head.
She had wanted one conversation to make everything right.
May you like
Instead, she'd been given something harder.
The opportunity to change without knowing whether forgiveness would ever follow.
