Chapter 1 - The Pregnancy Test on the Counter

“WHEN WERE YOU GOING TO TELL YOUR FATHER YOU'RE PREGNANT?”

Nicole slammed a pregnancy test box onto the kitchen counter.

Seventeen-year-old Maya Bennett stopped halfway through pouring herself a glass of orange juice.

For a moment, she thought she had misunderstood.

“What?”

Nicole folded her arms.

“Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.”

Maya looked at the box.

Two pink lines were printed on its bright blue packaging.

Her stomach tightened.

“Nicole, that's not mine.”

“Really? Because I found it in the upstairs bathroom, right beside your things.”

Maya stared at her stepmother.

The accusation made no sense.

She had spent the afternoon at school, stayed late for a robotics club meeting, and come home less than twenty minutes earlier.

Now she was being accused of hiding a pregnancy.

“I'm not pregnant,” Maya said. “I swear.”

Nicole gave a sharp laugh.

“Then explain why this was sitting next to your makeup bag.”

“I don't know! I've never seen it before!”

Andre Bennett stepped into the kitchen from the hallway.

At forty-three, Andre had always considered himself a patient father. He worked long hours managing a construction supply company, but he tried to make time for his three children.

His oldest, Maya, was from his first marriage.

Ten-year-old Jordan was Nicole's son from a previous relationship, and six-year-old Grace was the youngest child Andre and Nicole shared.

Andre looked from his daughter to his wife.

“What's going on?”

Nicole immediately picked up the box.

“Your daughter has something she needs to tell you.”

Maya felt her chest tighten.

“Dad, she's accusing me of being pregnant.”

Andre frowned.

“Nicole, what are you talking about?”

“I found a pregnancy test in her bathroom.”

“It's not mine!” Maya protested.

Andre examined the box.

Then he turned toward his daughter.

“Maya, if there's something going on, I need you to tell me the truth.”

The words struck her harder than she expected.

“You think I'm lying?”

“I'm asking you to be honest.”

“I am being honest!”

Nicole shook her head.

“See? This is exactly what she does. She gets defensive instead of answering simple questions.”

Maya stepped backward.

She had never felt so exposed inside her own home.

Her father was studying her face, searching for evidence that she was hiding something.

Nicole stood beside him, looking increasingly certain of her accusation.

Then a little voice interrupted.

“Mommy?”

Grace entered the kitchen holding a stuffed rabbit.

She pointed at the box.

“Isn't that the thing you bought yesterday?”

Nicole froze.

“What?”

Grace walked closer.

“The blue box. At the store. Remember?”

Nicole's expression tightened.

“Sweetheart, go play in the living room.”

But Jordan, who had been sitting at the dining table doing homework, looked up.

“Mom, Grace is right.”

Nicole turned sharply.

“Jordan.”

“I saw it in your shopping bag yesterday.”

The room became silent.

Andre slowly looked toward his wife.

“Nicole?”

She gave a nervous laugh.

“Kids get confused. They probably saw something similar.”

Jordan shook his head.

“No, Mom. It was that exact box. It fell out when you were putting the groceries away.”

Andre turned toward the grocery bag still sitting beside the microwave.

Nicole had used the same reusable bag for another shopping trip that morning. Several receipts remained inside its side pocket.

Andre reached in.

He unfolded the longest one.

His eyes moved down the list of purchases.

Milk.

Bread.

Dish soap.

Pregnancy test kit.

His hand stopped.

The receipt showed the store address, the purchase date, and the last four digits of Nicole's payment card.

Andre looked up.

“Nicole. You bought this.”

Nicole opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Answer me.”

She swallowed.

“Yes.”

Maya felt the room tilt around her.

“You bought it?”

Nicole looked away.

“Yes, Maya.”

Maya's voice began trembling.

“Then why did you say it was mine?”

Nicole pressed a hand against the counter.

“I panicked.”

Maya stared at her.

“Panicked?”

“I didn't know what else to do.”

Andre placed the receipt beside the pregnancy test box.

“You accused my daughter of something you knew wasn't true?”

Nicole wiped her forehead.

“I can explain.”

But Maya was already crying.

She looked toward her father.

“You asked me to tell the truth.”

Andre's face changed.

Maya continued.

“I told you the truth three times, Dad. And you still looked at me like I was lying.”

Nobody spoke.

Grace clutched her rabbit.

Jordan lowered his head toward his homework.

Maya picked up her school backpack.

As she turned toward the stairs, Nicole called after her.

“Maya, please. I really was scared.”

Maya stopped.

Then she looked back.

“Whatever you were scared of, why did you decide I should be the one who got punished for it?”

May you like

Nicole had no answer.

And for the first time that evening, Andre understood that the pregnancy test was not the only thing his wife had been hiding.
