Chapter 9: The Betrayal That Started Before My Wedding

I couldn't move.

I knew the person walking toward us.

I had known him my entire life.

He was the man who attended my father's birthday dinners.

The man who helped me choose my first car.

The man who stood beside my father at business events and called him his brother.

The man who hugged me at my father's funeral and told me:

"Your father loved you more than anything in this world.""

Daniel Hayes.

My father's closest friend.

My father's business partner.

My father's second family.

And now he was walking toward us with two men behind him.

My father stepped in front of me.

A protective instinct.

The same one he had always had.

"Elena, stay behind me.""

I stared at Daniel.

My voice barely worked.

"Why?""

Daniel stopped several feet away.

His face looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Something else.

Like carrying a secret for two years had changed him.

"Thomas.""

My father's expression hardened.

"You shouldn't have come.""

Daniel looked at him sadly.

"You always did make things more difficult than they needed to be.""

My stomach turned.

Because those weren't the words of a friend.

Those were the words of someone who believed he was in control.

I stepped forward.

"Daniel.""

His eyes moved to me.

For a second, I saw regret.

Then it disappeared.

"Elena.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He looked confused.

"No?""

"You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.""

Silence.

The wind moved across the empty platform.

My father looked at me.

"Elena, listen to me.""

But I couldn't look away from Daniel.

"You knew.""

Daniel didn't answer.

"You knew my father was alive.""

A pause.

Then:

"Yes.""

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Because some part of me hoped he would deny it.

Some part of me wanted him to give me a reason.

But he didn't.

He simply admitted it.

"Why?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because I had to.""

My father's voice became cold.

"No.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You still don't understand.""

"I understand perfectly.""

My father stepped forward.

"You sold out everything we built.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You think I wanted this?""

"Yes.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice rose.

For the first time, I saw emotion.

Not guilt.

Anger.

"You think you were the only one trying to save people?""

My father stared.

Daniel continued.

"You built a company. You became successful. You protected everyone around you.""

His voice cracked.

"But you never saw what happened when things fell apart.""

I looked between them.

"What are you talking about?""

Neither answered.

I felt something inside me breaking.

Because everyone had pieces of the truth.

Everyone had conversations I wasn't part of.

Everyone knew a version of my life that I didn't.

"Someone explain.""

My voice echoed across the empty station.

My father looked at me.

"Daniel worked with Richard Whitmore.""

I looked at Daniel.

He didn't deny it.

"Why?""

Daniel looked away.

"Because I had no choice.""

I almost laughed.

"No choice?""

He looked at me.

"You have no idea what Richard did.""

"Then tell me.""

His face tightened.

"He threatened my family.""

The words silenced me.

"My daughter.""

I froze.

Daniel continued.

"When I refused to help him, he made it clear that my family would suffer.""

My father shook his head.

"You could have come to me.""

"I did.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You weren't listening.""

"I was investigating.""

"You were risking everything.""

My father stared.

"Because it was the right thing to do.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That's exactly what I hated about you, Thomas.""

My father looked hurt.

"You always believed doing the right thing would protect you.""

The words stayed in the air.

Because they revealed something.

Daniel wasn't just a villain.

He was someone who made a terrible choice.

But a terrible choice was still a choice.

"What did you do?""

I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"I gave Richard information.""

My heart dropped.

"What information?""

"Your father's investigation.""

The world became quiet.

"You told him?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

My father closed his eyes.

Like hearing it again still hurt.

"Did you tell him about me?""

Daniel looked away.

"No.""

My father opened his eyes.

"Then how did he find out?""

Daniel didn't answer.

And again, the silence told me everything.

I looked at my father.

"What happened?""

My father's expression changed.

The pain returned.

"He found out because of someone else.""

My heart started racing.

Someone else.

Another person.

Another secret.

Daniel looked at me.

"Elena, there is something you need to understand.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"The Whitmores weren't the only ones hiding things.""

My father looked at him sharply.

"Don't.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Your father didn't disappear because Richard found him.""

My breath stopped.

"What?""

"He disappeared because he realized the investigation had reached someone closer.""

I felt cold.

"Who?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

Then he said:

"Your mother.""

The world stopped.

My mother.

A woman who died when I was nineteen.

A woman I remembered as gentle.

Kind.

The person who taught me to believe people had good hearts.

"No.""

My father looked away.

And that was enough.

I turned to him.

"Dad.""

He didn't speak.

"Dad, tell me he's lying.""

My father's silence destroyed me.

"Please.""

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

The words were worse than anything else.

Because they meant it was true.

I stepped back.

"No.""

My father reached for me.

"Elena.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"My mother?""

He nodded slowly.

"Not the way you think.""

I laughed through tears.

"How else am I supposed to think?""

My father looked broken.

"Your mother wasn't working against me.""

"Then what?""

"She was protecting you.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel answered.

"Your mother discovered Richard's operation years ago.""

I looked at him.

"Before my father?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she expose him?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Because she found out something worse.""

"What?""

He looked at me.

"Richard had someone inside our family.""

I felt sick.

Again.

Always another secret.

Always another person.

"Who?""

My father hesitated.

Then:

"Someone who had access to everything.""

My mind raced.

My family.

My father's company.

The Whitmores.

Who could connect all of it?

Then I remembered.

A name.

A person who had always been there.

A person who handled my father's business affairs.

A person who knew every account.

Every document.

Every meeting.

I whispered:

"No.""

My father looked at me.

"You know.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What?""

I turned toward my father.

"You're talking about...""

I couldn't say it.

Because saying it would make it real.

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

The person who betrayed us.

The person who connected my father to Richard.

The person who knew everything.

Was someone I had never suspected.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping me search for the truth.

My stomach dropped.

Because suddenly, every conversation made sense.

Every warning.

Every piece of information.

Every time they were one step ahead.

I whispered the name.

"Laura.""

Nobody spoke.

Because they didn't need to.

Their silence was enough.

My lawyer.

The woman I called when I needed protection.

The woman who helped me investigate the Whitmores.

The woman who knew every document I had.

Every move I made.

My father looked at me.

"Elena, you have to listen carefully.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because if Laura knows you're here...""

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Not mine.

Not Grant's.

My father's.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

"What is it?""

He didn't answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message.

From Laura.

One sentence.

*I told you she would find the truth eventually.*

My blood went cold.

Another message appeared.

*Now I need to know what Thomas told her.*

I stared at the screen.

Because Laura wasn't searching for the truth.

She was searching for what I knew.

And before I could process it, my father's phone received one final message.

A photograph.

Of us standing on the train platform.

Taken moments earlier.

The message underneath was simple.

*You have ten minutes.*

My father grabbed my hand.

Grant moved closer.

Daniel looked terrified.

And for the first time, I understood the real danger.

The Whitmores were never trying to hide the truth forever.

They were trying to control who discovered it.

May you like

And now that I knew everything...

they were coming for all of us.
