Chapter 7: The Phone Call From The Dead
For five seconds, neither of us moved.
The phone continued ringing.
My father's name glowed on Grant's screen.
*Thomas Hayes.*
My father's name.
My father's number.
A number that should have been disconnected two years ago.
A number that belonged to a man who had been buried.
I looked at Grant.
He looked more terrified than I had ever seen him.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Terrified.
"Answer it," I whispered.
He didn't move.
"Grant.""
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"Elena...""
"Answer it.""
The ringing stopped.
The screen went dark.
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
Then, almost immediately, the phone rang again.
Same name.
Same number.
My father.
Grant looked at me.
"I don't understand.""
I stared at him.
"Neither do I.""
He slowly pressed the answer button.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Grant said:
"Hello?""
Nothing.
Only static.
A faint crackling sound.
Then a voice.
A man's voice.
Weak.
Distorted.
But familiar.
"Grant.""
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Even after two years.
Even through the static.
Even through the impossible.
I knew.
"Dad?""
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Grant looked at me.
The person on the other end became silent.
Then the voice spoke again.
"Elena.""
My knees nearly gave out.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
"No.""
It couldn't be.
It wasn't possible.
People didn't come back from the dead.
But my father's voice was there.
Speaking my name.
"Who is this?"" Grant asked.
The voice ignored him.
"Elena, listen carefully.""
My eyes filled.
"Dad?""
"Do not trust anyone in that house.""
I stopped breathing.
The house.
The Whitmore estate.
The same house where I had been slapped.
The same house where my father warned me never to go.
"Where are you?"" I asked.
The line crackled.
"I don't have much time.""
My heart pounded.
"Are you alive?""
Silence.
A painful, terrifying silence.
Then:
"Yes.""
I covered my mouth.
Grant stepped closer.
But I raised my hand.
Stop.
Because this moment belonged to me.
"Dad, where have you been?""
Another pause.
"I tried to tell you.""
My voice broke.
"You left me.""
"I know.""
"You died.""
"No.""
The word came softly.
"I disappeared.""
I felt dizzy.
Everything I knew was falling apart.
"Why?""
The voice became quieter.
"Because Richard Whitmore wanted me gone.""
Grant immediately looked away.
I noticed.
And that told me something.
He knew more than he admitted.
My hands shook.
"Did he hurt you?""
"No.""
Another pause.
"Not directly.""
My father's old warning echoed in my mind.
Men like him rarely do. They use other people to send messages.
I looked at Grant.
He looked sick.
"Dad, Grant is here.""
The line went silent.
Then my father's voice changed.
"Elena.""
A warning.
"Listen to me.""
"What?""
"Do not let him convince you he is innocent.""
I looked at Grant.
His face fell.
My father continued.
"He loved you.""
The words surprised me.
"But fear made him weak.""
Grant closed his eyes.
My father knew.
"Your husband is not the person who planned this.""
My heart stopped.
"But he helped them.""
Grant looked down.
The words hurt him because they were true.
"Dad, what happened?""
The static became louder.
"I found evidence that Richard and Meredith were moving money through illegal accounts.""
I looked at Grant.
His mother.
His father.
The entire family.
"I was going to expose them.""
"Then why didn't you?""
My father's voice became distant.
"Because I discovered something worse.""
"What?""
A pause.
"The money wasn't the real secret.""
The room went silent.
"What was it?""
Before he could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A woman's voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
"Who are you talking to?""
Grant's face changed instantly.
He grabbed the phone.
"Father?""
I looked at him.
No.
Not his father.
Someone else.
Someone was there.
My father's voice returned.
"Elena, run.""
The line disconnected.
I stared at the phone.
Then at Grant.
"What just happened?""
He didn't answer.
His face had lost all color.
"Grant.""
He looked at me.
"That was my mother.""
My stomach dropped.
"Meredith?""
He nodded.
"She found him.""
The room became completely still.
"Found him where?""
Grant didn't answer.
Because he knew.
He knew something.
Something he had been hiding.
I stepped closer.
"Where is my father?""
His eyes filled.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"I'm not.""
"You just spoke to him.""
"I know.""
"Then how can you not know?""
He looked broken.
"Because I thought he was dead.""
The anger inside me exploded.
"You thought?""
He flinched.
"Elena—"
"You thought my father was dead while you married me?""
"No.""
"While your family watched me walk into that house?""
"No.""
"While your father destroyed everything he touched?""
"No!""
His voice cracked.
The first real emotion I had heard from him.
Not anger.
Pain.
"I was told he died.""
I stared.
"By who?""
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
"Your father?""
He nodded.
"Richard told me.""
My chest tightened.
"When?""
"Two years ago.""
The same time my father disappeared.
The same time Grant suddenly became closer to his family.
The same time everything changed.
I sat down.
Because my body couldn't process any more.
Grant stood across from me.
"I need to tell you everything.""
I looked up.
"Now.""
He nodded.
"My father found out your father was investigating.""
I listened.
"He told me Thomas was dangerous.""
My jaw tightened.
"My father?""
"He said your father was going to destroy everything.""
Grant looked ashamed.
"I believed him.""
"Why?""
"Because I was young. Because I trusted him. Because I had spent my entire life believing my father was the person who protected us.""
His voice broke.
"Then I met you.""
I looked away.
"Don't.""
"I'm not saying it excuses anything.""
"Good.""
"I'm saying I should have listened to you instead of him.""
The honesty almost hurt more.
Because I remembered the man I fell in love with.
He was still somewhere inside this person.
But that didn't erase what he did.
"What happened after my father disappeared?""
Grant swallowed.
"My father told everyone he had died.""
"Everyone?""
"Yes.""
"But there was no body?""
He hesitated.
"No.""
I stood.
"What?""
"I didn't know.""
I stared at him.
"You didn't know if my father was dead?""
"I was told there was an accident.""
"What kind?""
"Car accident.""
My blood went cold.
"My father's car was found?""
Grant nodded.
"Near a highway.""
"But?""
He looked away.
"But there was no body.""
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
For two years, I had mourned a death that never happened.
A funeral without a body.
A goodbye without truth.
My father wasn't gone.
He had been hidden.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
My breath stopped.
It was my father.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Standing beside a window.
And beneath the picture was a message.
*You wanted the truth. Now you have it.*
Another message appeared.
*But ask yourself why your father never came home.*
I stared.
Then the final message arrived.
*Because he was protecting you from the person closest to you.*
Slowly, I turned toward Grant.
His face had changed.
Because he knew what the message meant.
"What does that mean?""
He didn't answer.
"Grant.""
His voice was barely a whisper.
"Elena...""
"What?""
He looked at me.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
"Your father wasn't hiding from my family.""
I waited.
"Your father was hiding from someone inside yours.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Inside mine?""
Grant nodded.
Then he said the one thing I never expected.
"The person your father was protecting you from...""
He looked at the photograph.
"...wasn't Richard Whitmore.""
A pause.
"It was someone you trusted more than anyone.""
I stared at him.
May you like
Because suddenly, the greatest betrayal wasn't coming from the family I married into.
It was coming from the person I thought had always protected me.
