Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

Five days after Alexander returned home early, Veronica came back to collect her belongings.

Sofia was spending the afternoon with Denise, who had agreed to help Naomi provide familiar childcare while the family established a new routine.

Naomi remained at the house as a witness.

Veronica arrived with her older sister, Camille.

She wore a tailored cream suit and carried a designer handbag.

Her appearance was immaculate.

Alexander remembered how much that polished image had impressed him when they first met.

Veronica had been charming, accomplished, and confident.

She handled complicated social occasions effortlessly.

She remembered birthdays.

She organized charity events.

She knew exactly how to make guests feel welcome.

With Alexander, she had always presented herself as patient and affectionate toward Sofia.

At least when he was watching.

Now he wondered how many moments he'd mistaken for kindness because he wanted his engagement to succeed.

“Alexander,” Veronica said, entering the foyer.

He stepped aside.

“Your things are in the upstairs bedroom and guest closet. Naomi can show you.”

Veronica looked toward the living room.

“Can we at least talk like adults?”

“We can talk calmly.”

Camille shifted uncomfortably beside her sister.

Veronica lowered her voice.

“I can't believe you're humiliating me like this.”

Alexander looked at her.

“I'm not interested in humiliating you.”

“Then why cancel our wedding?”

“Because I don't trust you around my daughter.”

Veronica gave a bitter laugh.

“Unbelievable.”

Naomi remained near the hallway.

Veronica noticed her.

“Does your entire family need to supervise me now?”

“No one's stopping you from collecting your property,” Alexander replied.

Veronica looked toward the staircase.

“Where's Sofia?”

“She's safe.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“You don't need to know where she is today.”

Camille raised a hand.

“Ronnie, just get your things. We don't need another scene.”

But Veronica wasn't finished.

She turned toward Alexander.

“You're letting a four-year-old ruin our future.”

Alexander studied her face.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“Oh, don't start.”

“You just blamed a child for our relationship ending.”

“She has been acting out for months.”

“And your answer was to make her kneel at your feet?”

“She stained my shoes!”

The words came out sharply.

Camille looked at her sister.

“Veronica.”

“What? They're expensive shoes!”

Alexander stared.

“Do you understand that you're talking about a four-year-old girl?”

Veronica's expression hardened.

“Someone needed to teach her consequences.”

“Cleaning up an accidental spill is one thing. Humiliating a frightened child is another.”

Veronica crossed her arms.

Alexander took a breath.

“I want to understand something. Sofia told me you said I would send her away if she was bad.”

Veronica looked away.

“Children misunderstand things.”

“Did you tell her that?”

No answer.

“Veronica.”

She turned back.

“I told her that if she kept making trouble, you might decide she should stay with Naomi for a while.”

Naomi made a small sound.

Alexander felt his stomach twist.

“Why would you tell her that?”

“Because she wouldn't listen to me!”

“She believed you.”

Veronica shrugged.

“Then maybe it worked.”

The room fell silent.

Camille looked at her younger sister as though seeing her for the first time.

Alexander stepped back.

He had spent years learning how to read people in difficult business negotiations.

He could recognize deflection.

He could recognize someone protecting their reputation.

But he had never expected to hear his future wife justify frightening a child into obedience.

He asked one final question.

“How did Sofia get those bruises?”

Veronica exhaled sharply.

“I already told you. She fell.”

“Denise witnessed you grabbing her arm weeks ago.”

Veronica's eyes narrowed.

“That woman had no business interfering in my home.”

Alexander waited.

“What happened to Sofia's face?”

“I didn't hit her.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Veronica looked toward Camille.

Then she spoke with obvious irritation.

“She was crying in the hallway. I took her by the arm to move her along. She bumped into the doorframe.”

Camille went still.

Alexander felt his hands tighten.

He forced himself to relax them.

“When was that?”

“Earlier in the week. I don't remember exactly.”

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

“Did you arrange for her to be checked?”

Veronica said nothing.

Alexander lowered his voice.

“You knew she had been hurt. You saw her crying. And you kept it from me.”

Veronica's face flushed.

“You weren't even here, Alexander!”

He looked at her.

“You were always at work. Always traveling. Always telling me to handle everything.”

Her voice rose.

“You wanted the perfect home and the perfect family, but you left me to manage all the difficult parts!”

Alexander stood very still.

There was truth inside her accusation.

He had been absent more often than he should have been.

He had ignored warnings.

He had trusted appearances instead of paying attention.

But Veronica was using those failures to excuse what she'd done.

“You made this easy,” she said coldly. “You weren't here to see any of it.”

Alexander stared at the woman he had once planned to marry.

He could no longer deny his own part in creating the circumstances that allowed Sofia's suffering to go unnoticed.

But accepting responsibility for his absence did not mean accepting Veronica's cruelty.

And he was finally ready to make that distinction clear.
