Chapter 4 - The Lie That Reached Everyone

By Sunday morning, Veronica had begun telling her version of the story.

Alexander first learned about it when his cousin called.

“Alex, what's happening between you and Veronica?”

He was standing in the kitchen making pancakes.

Sofia sat at the counter beside Naomi, carefully arranging blueberries into a crooked smile on her plate.

“Why?”

“She's saying you attacked her.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“What exactly did she say?”

“That you came home furious, smashed a wineglass, and made her fall.”

Alexander glanced toward his daughter.

“Some of that happened,” he said quietly. “I knocked the glass from her hand. She stumbled and fell.”

His cousin hesitated.

“Did you hit her?”

“No.”

“Then you need to tell people.”

Alexander looked at Sofia.

She was trying to balance another blueberry on the edge of her pancake.

“I need to take care of my daughter first.”

By afternoon, Veronica's account had spread through several family conversations.

She described Sofia as difficult.

She claimed she had simply been teaching the child to clean up a spill.

She said Alexander's explosive anger had made her fear for her safety.

Some relatives immediately believed her.

Others called Alexander.

A few wanted the entire matter settled quietly before the wedding.

The ceremony was scheduled for six weeks later.

Invitations had been mailed.

Vendors had been paid.

A venue had been reserved for nearly two hundred guests.

Veronica had spent months planning every detail.

Alexander had once enjoyed watching her excitement.

Now the wedding plans felt like evidence of how little he'd understood about the woman he intended to bring into his daughter's life permanently.

Naomi found him staring at the guest list.

“What are you thinking?”

“That I let this go too far.”

“You didn't know everything.”

“I knew enough to ask more questions.”

Naomi pulled out a chair.

“Then don't repeat the mistake.”

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Stop worrying about what everyone thinks. Find out what Sofia needs. Start there.”

That afternoon, Alexander met with his attorney.

He gave a complete account of the confrontation, including the broken glass and Veronica's fall.

He supplied the photographs he'd taken afterward and the contact information for Denise.

The attorney explained that the child-protection process would proceed independently and warned him not to turn the situation into a public argument.

There was no benefit in trading accusations online.

There was also no reason to expose Sofia's private experiences to satisfy curious relatives.

Alexander agreed.

He canceled the wedding and notified the vendors, accepting the financial losses required under their contracts.

He removed Veronica from his household scheduling and childcare authorizations.

He arranged for her belongings to be collected at a scheduled time with another adult present.

And he informed his staff that Veronica was no longer authorized to make decisions regarding Sofia.

None of it made him feel victorious.

At home, Sofia had begun drawing again.

But she still startled whenever someone walked into a room unexpectedly.

She asked permission before taking fruit from the refrigerator.

When Naomi accidentally spilled water near the sink, Sofia rushed forward with a towel.

“I'll clean it! I'll clean it!”

Naomi immediately crouched beside her.

“Sweetheart, it's just water.”

Sofia kept wiping.

“I'm being good.”

Alexander, standing in the doorway, felt his heart break.

He crossed the kitchen slowly.

“Baby, you don't have to prove you're good.”

Sofia stared at the wet towel.

“Veronica says good girls don't make messes.”

Alexander knelt beside her.

“Everyone makes messes.”

“Even you?”

“Especially me.”

He reached for another towel.

“See? We can clean it together. Nobody needs to be scared.”

Sofia handed him the first towel.

For the next few minutes, they dried the floor in silence.

When they finished, Sofia leaned against his shoulder.

It was a small moment.

But Alexander held onto it.

The following afternoon, a child-protection worker contacted him to arrange the next steps in the assessment.

Alexander provided the requested information and agreed to cooperate.

He did not ask Sofia to rehearse anything.

He did not tell her what she needed to say.

He simply continued giving her a safe, predictable routine.

That evening, Veronica sent him a message.

You are destroying my reputation over one misunderstanding. If you don't fix this, I'll make sure everyone knows what kind of man you really are.

Alexander read it once.

Then another message arrived.

I need to collect the rest of my things. And we are going to have a conversation about this wedding.

Alexander forwarded both messages to his attorney.

He had no intention of arguing in front of Sofia again.

But he also understood that Veronica wasn't going to accept his decision quietly.

For the first time, protecting his daughter meant allowing other people to think badly of him.

And he was prepared to do exactly that.
