Chapter 7: The Son Who Came Back

For five years, Henry Bellamy had avoided saying his son's name.

Not because he had forgotten him.

Because he hadn't.

Michael Bellamy stood in the doorway wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression unreadable.

He looked older than Rebecca expected.

Not old.

Just changed.

The confident young man from the photographs hanging in the corporate office had become someone harder.

Someone carrying years of anger behind his eyes.

Henry didn't move.

Neither did Michael.

The entire store seemed to hold its breath.

Then Daniel Cross stepped forward.

“Henry.””

Henry ignored him.

His eyes remained on his son.

“Why?””

Michael's jaw tightened.

That single word carried years of pain.

“That's your first question?””

Henry said nothing.

Michael laughed quietly.

“Not ‘where have you been?’”

A pause.

“Not ‘are you okay?’”

Rebecca looked away.

She suddenly felt like she was watching something far more personal than a business dispute.

Henry's face remained controlled.

“Why are you here, Michael?””

Michael stepped inside.

“Because apparently nobody was going to tell me the company I helped build was falling apart.””

Henry's eyes narrowed.

“You left.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Yes.””

The word was sharp.

“I left.””

Daniel stood beside him, watching.

Rebecca noticed something.

Daniel wasn't leading.

He was waiting.

That was important.

Michael looked around the showroom.

“Nothing changed.””

Henry looked confused.

“What?””

Michael touched the glass display case.

“Same floors. Same lights. Same people pretending everything is perfect.””

His eyes moved toward Henry.

“But underneath?””

He shook his head.

“Still broken.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Michael, this isn't the way to handle this.””

Michael looked at him.

“You still call him Mr. Bellamy?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Michael smiled sadly.

“Of course you do.””

Henry finally spoke.

“Stop.””

Michael looked at him.

“Stop what?””

“Turning this into something else.””

Michael laughed.

“Something else?””

His voice rose slightly.

“This is exactly what it is.””

Daniel quietly said, “Michael.””

Michael glanced at him.

“I know.””

Then he looked back at Henry.

“I didn't come here to fight.””

Henry looked at him.

“Then why bring Daniel?””

Michael didn't answer.

That silence told everyone enough.

Henry nodded slowly.

“So it's true.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“What is?””

“You're working with him.””

Daniel stepped in.

“Henry, let's be reasonable.””

Henry turned toward him.

“You used my son.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“No.””

He looked at Michael.

“Your son came to me.””

The words hit harder than expected.

Rebecca watched Michael's face.

For a moment, she saw something.

Regret.

Then anger replaced it.

Henry looked at Michael.

“Is that true?””

Michael looked away.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Henry closed his eyes briefly.

Just for a second.

Then he opened them.

“Why?””

Michael's hands tightened.

“Because I was tired.””

“Tired of what?””

“Being invisible.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Michael stepped closer.

“You built everything.””

He pointed around the store.

“You created the name.””

His eyes moved to the walls.

“You created the legacy.””

Then back to Henry.

“And I was always just your son.””

Henry's expression softened slightly.

“Michael.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You don't get to say my name like you understand.””

The store became silent.

Michael continued.

“When Mom died, you disappeared into this company.””

Henry looked down.

“When I needed you, you were always somewhere else.””

Rebecca noticed Henry didn't defend himself.

That was unusual.

Michael looked toward the display case.

“I spent my whole life trying to prove I belonged here.””

Daniel watched quietly.

Then Michael said the sentence that made Rebecca understand everything.

“I didn't want to take your company.””

He looked at Henry.

“I wanted you to finally notice me.””

Nobody moved.

Even Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Henry stared at his son.

“Then why work with Daniel?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because you only listen when something is about to be taken away.””

That hurt.

Rebecca could see it.

Not anger.

Pain.

Henry looked toward Eleanor.

Then Thomas.

Then Michael.

“How long?””

Michael hesitated.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been planning this?””

Michael didn't answer.

Henry nodded.

“That long.””

Michael looked away.

Daniel finally stepped forward.

“We are wasting time.””

Henry looked at him.

“Are we?””

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.””

He pulled out a folder.

“The board meeting is tomorrow.””

Thomas frowned.

“What board meeting?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You weren't informed?””

Henry's face changed.

“What meeting?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“A vote.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“A vote for what?””

Daniel smiled.

“To remove Henry Bellamy as chairman.””

The room went completely still.

Rebecca felt her heart drop.

Henry stared at Daniel.

“You arranged a board vote.””

Daniel shrugged.

“I encouraged one.””

Thomas looked furious.

“You don't have that authority.””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“But Michael does.””

Everyone looked at Michael.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

Henry understood immediately.

The signature.

The access.

The information.

Michael had been the missing piece.

“You signed it.””

Michael looked down.

“I did.””

Henry nodded slowly.

Rebecca expected anger.

A shout.

Something.

Instead, Henry looked disappointed.

And somehow that was worse.

“Why didn't you just ask me?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because you never heard me.””

That sentence silenced everyone.

Then Henry's phone rang.

Nobody expected it.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

Henry answered.

“Hello?””

He listened.

Then his face became serious.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Are you certain?””

Everyone watched him.

Then Henry slowly lowered the phone.

Thomas asked, “Sir?””

Henry looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

“The board vote isn't tomorrow.””

Daniel's smile faded.

“What?””

Henry turned the phone around.

Nobody could read the screen from where they stood.

But Henry's voice made the meaning clear.

“It already happened.””

Daniel froze.

Thomas stepped forward.

“How?””

Henry looked at him.

“An emergency vote was held this morning.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Henry looked directly at him.

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Daniel looked nervous.

Henry continued.

“Because someone on the board made a mistake.””

Daniel said nothing.

Henry stared at him.

“They voted based on information that was incomplete.””

Michael looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Henry looked toward Eleanor.

She already knew.

“The vote can be challenged.””

Daniel's confidence returned slightly.

“On what grounds?””

Henry picked up the folder.

“Fraud.””

The word changed everything.

Daniel's face hardened.

“What?””

Henry looked at him.

“You didn't just manipulate my son.””

He looked toward the agreement.

“You forged access.””

Then toward the video.

“You manipulated evidence.””

Then toward Michael.

“And you convinced him he was fighting me when he was actually helping you.””

Michael's face changed.

“Daniel?””

Daniel looked away.

Only for a second.

But Michael saw it.

Henry saw it.

Everyone saw it.

And Michael finally realized something.

May you like

He had never been Daniel's partner.

He had been Daniel's tool.
