THE GHOST CHILD / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Child Before Emily

The name on the back of the photograph seemed to burn into my mind.

*Lily Carter.*

I stared at the words.

I looked at my father.

And for the first time since I had uncovered the truth, Richard Carter looked completely defeated.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Not calculating.

Defeated.

“Who is Lily?””

Nobody answered.

The police officers stood nearby, waiting.

Thomas looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

“You found it.””

I turned toward him.

“You know this name?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because everyone in that house had become an expert at hiding the truth.

Every pause.

Every glance.

Every hesitation.

It meant something.

“Thomas.””

He looked at me.

“Lily was the first.””

My heart sank.

“The first what?””

He looked toward Emily.

“The first child your father tried to erase.””

The room became silent.

Emily stepped closer to me.

I felt her small hand grab mine.

A child who had already suffered enough.

And now there was another child.

Another secret.

Another life destroyed.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Richard said nothing.

“Dad.””

His eyes stayed on the photograph.

That was his answer.

I felt sick.

“You did this before.””

My father finally spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

I laughed.

The same words.

Always the same words.

“You keep saying that.””

His expression hardened.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“It’s an excuse.””

Richard looked at me.

“You think everything is simple.””

“You made it simple.””

I held up the photograph.

“A child disappeared.””

My voice shook.

“Again.””

Emily looked at me.

I immediately softened.

“I’m sorry.””

She nodded slowly.

But I saw the fear.

The fear that there were more children.

More rooms.

More locked doors.

Thomas took a breath.

“Lily was your father’s granddaughter.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked confused.

“Impossible.””

Thomas nodded.

“She was born before Emily.””

I looked at my father.

“Another daughter?””

Richard looked away.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

I watched him carefully.

“Then who was she?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my mother stepped forward.

Her face was full of shame.

“She was my daughter’s child.””

I stared.

“What?””

My mother’s voice trembled.

“Before you.””

Before me.

The words didn’t make sense.

I looked between my parents.

“You had another child?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The mansion suddenly felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in around us.

“Where is she?””

My mother began crying.

“I don’t know.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t know?””

She covered her mouth.

“Your father made sure nobody knew.””

I turned toward Richard.

“How many?””

He didn’t answer.

“How many people did you erase?””

The police officers watched silently.

Even they seemed shocked.

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I almost smiled.

“Actually, I think I finally do.””

I looked at Emily.

“I’m finding every person you buried.””

My father’s expression changed.

A flash of panic.

Only for a second.

But enough.

Thomas noticed too.

“There are more records.””

My eyes moved to him.

“What?””

Thomas opened the folder.

“I didn’t bring everything.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew?””

“I needed protection.””

“You needed protection?””

I stepped forward.

“My daughter spent eleven years alone.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t.””

I looked at Emily.

“You don’t know what she lost.””

Thomas nodded.

“You’re right.””

The honesty stopped me.

Then he said:

“And that is why we have to find Lily.””

The police officer finally stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, we need to understand what’s happening.””

I looked at him.

“There are more victims.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Do not believe them.””

The officer turned.

“Mr. Carter, you are not in a position to give instructions.””

For once, my father had no response.

The officer looked at the photograph.

“Who is Lily Carter?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily spoke.

Quietly.

“She was scared.””

Everyone turned.

My heart stopped.

“Emily?””

She looked at the picture.

“I remember her.””

My breathing stopped.

“How?””

She touched the photograph.

“She was in the other room.””

I crouched beside her.

“What other room?””

She swallowed.

“The room before mine.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“There was another room?””

She nodded.

“Grandpa told me never to talk about it.””

I looked at Richard.

“You knew.””

Emily continued.

“She cried at night.””

Her voice became smaller.

“She called for someone.””

“Who?””

Emily looked at me.

“She called for Grandma.””

My mother covered her mouth.

A broken sound escaped her.

I looked at her.

“You heard her?””

My mother nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed whatever remained.

“You heard a child crying.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

My mother collapsed into a chair.

“I was afraid.””

I stared.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“And Richard used that fear.””

I looked at my father.

“How did Lily disappear?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

My brother looked like he had aged ten years.

“I know what happened.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

Michael swallowed.

“When Lily was born, Grandpa believed she was a problem.””

“Why?””

“Because she was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Michael looked at my father.

“Of something he wanted hidden.””

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“Michael.””

My brother ignored him.

“Lily’s mother discovered the foundation accounts.””

The room went silent.

“Another investigator?””

Michael nodded.

“She found the same thing Thomas found.””

Illegal money.

Fraud.

Secrets.

I looked at the photograph.

“And Lily?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“She saw something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Again?””

He nodded.

“Again.””

I felt sick.

A pattern.

My father didn’t just hide problems.

He erased witnesses.

Children.

Families.

Anyone who threatened him.

The officer looked at Richard.

“Is there somewhere we can find records of this?””

My father laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

“You think records matter?””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Records can be changed.””

My blood went cold.

Because that was the lesson.

That was his entire world.

Paper.

Documents.

Names.

He believed if he controlled the records, he controlled reality.

But he forgot one thing.

People remember.

Emily remembered.

Thomas remembered.

Sarah remembered.

And now I remembered.

The officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He turned toward me.

“Mr. Carter.””

“Yes?””

“We found another vehicle near the old Carter property.””

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

The officer hesitated.

Then:

“There was someone inside.””

“Who?””

He looked at the report.

“A woman.””

My stomach dropped.

“Sarah?””

The officer shook his head.

“No.””

I felt confused.

“Then who?””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then at my father.

“An older woman matching the description of Lily Carter’s mother.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother stood suddenly.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer frowned.

“Why?””

My mother’s face went white.

“Because she died.””

Silence.

I looked at Richard.

He looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that told me everything.

Someone else was alive.

Someone else had returned.

The officer continued:

“She asked for Daniel Carter.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why?””

The officer looked at me.

“She said she has proof that Emily was never supposed to survive.””

I felt Emily’s hand tighten around mine.

Then the officer added:

“And she says Richard Carter is not the only person who knows where the missing children went.””

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the floor.

For once, he looked powerless.

Then he whispered something so quietly that only I heard it.

“She wasn’t supposed to come back.””

I turned.

“Who?””

My father looked up.

His eyes filled with fear.

May you like

And he said:

“Your grandmother.””
