Chapter 5: The People Who Wanted Her Found
The vehicles outside the mansion stopped one by one.
Black SUVs.
No license plates visible from where I stood.
No ordinary people.
No police.
No ambulance.
Just a line of expensive cars sitting in the driveway like they had been invited.
My father looked almost relieved.
That scared me more than anything else.
A guilty man runs.
A desperate man hides.
But Richard Carter?
He opened the front door.
He welcomed them.
“Daniel,” he said calmly, “you should have listened.””
I kept my phone hidden in my hand.
The recording was still running.
Every word mattered.
Every confession.
Every piece of evidence.
I looked at Emily.
She was pressed against my side, holding onto my jacket.
She had spent eleven years behind a locked door.
And now strangers were arriving because of her.
I bent down.
“Stay close to me.””
She nodded.
“Don’t let them take me.””
The fear in her voice nearly destroyed me.
I looked into her eyes.
“No one is taking you anywhere.””
My father heard that.
He smiled.
“You always make promises you cannot keep.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re wrong.””
He shook his head.
“That was your problem, Daniel. You always believed love was stronger than power.””
I stepped forward.
“And yours was believing power could replace love.””
For a moment, something flashed across his face.
Anger.
Then the front doors opened.
Three people entered.
The first was a tall man wearing a dark coat.
Maybe in his fifties.
His expression was emotionless.
Behind him was a woman carrying a tablet.
The third person was younger.
A man who looked like he had barely slept in days.
The tall man looked directly at Emily.
Not at me.
Not at Richard.
At Emily.
“There she is.””
The words made Emily hide behind me.
I immediately noticed.
She wasn’t afraid of everyone.
She was afraid of people who looked at her like she belonged to them.
I stepped between them.
“Who are you?””
The tall man looked at my father.
“Is this the son?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
The man looked back at me.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
“I didn’t ask.””
A slight smile appeared on his face.
“You have your father’s attitude.””
“I’m nothing like him.””
Victor looked around the room.
“That remains to be seen.””
I hated how comfortable he was.
Like he owned the place.
Like this was not my family home.
Like he had walked into a meeting.
I pointed toward the door.
“Get out.””
Nobody moved.
Victor glanced at my father.
“Did you explain the situation?””
My father nodded.
“Not completely.””
Victor sighed.
“Of course not.””
I looked between them.
“What situation?””
Victor ignored me.
He walked closer to Emily.
I moved immediately.
“Stop.””
He paused.
“Daniel.””
The way he said my name bothered me.
Like he had known me for years.
“I understand your instinct.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
He looked at Emily.
“But your instinct is exactly why she is in danger.””
My hands tightened.
“Explain.””
Victor looked at my father.
Richard nodded.
“Tell him.””
I felt sick.
My father and this stranger were working together.
Still.
After everything.
Victor opened his tablet.
“Eleven years ago, Richard Carter discovered that his granddaughter had witnessed an incident involving a financial crime.””
I interrupted.
“She witnessed a murder.””
Victor looked at me.
“That is one interpretation.””
One interpretation.
My anger exploded.
“A man died.””
“And that man was involved in illegal activities.””
I stared at him.
“So you’re defending my father?””
“No.””
Victor’s answer came quickly.
“I am explaining why things happened.””
I laughed.
“You all use the same language.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“You talk about people like they’re problems to solve.””
Silence.
Then Victor looked at Emily.
“She was never supposed to remain hidden this long.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
My mother spoke quietly.
“She was supposed to be moved.””
I turned.
“Moved where?””
Nobody answered.
That was enough.
I looked at my father.
“You were going to send her away.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
“She needed protection.””
“She needed her father.””
His face hardened.
“You disappeared.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
My father stepped closer.
“You were unstable after her disappearance.””
I stared at him.
“You drugged me.””
Nobody spoke.
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Michael looked down.
My mother closed her eyes.
I looked at my brother.
“You knew.””
Michael whispered:
“Daniel…”
“You knew.””
He didn’t answer.
The truth was becoming unbearable.
They didn’t just hide Emily.
They destroyed my ability to find her.
My father continued.
“You were given time to recover.””
“Recover?””
I laughed.
“You made me believe my child died.””
“You were grieving.””
“You caused the grief.””
For the first time, Victor looked uncomfortable.
Like even he understood that line had been crossed.
I turned toward him.
“What are you?””
He studied me.
“A representative.””
“For who?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation mattered.
“Who?””
Victor looked at Richard.
My father answered.
“The Carter Foundation.””
I almost laughed.
The Carter Foundation.
The charity organization my family had built.
The organization people praised.
The organization that funded schools and hospitals.
The organization that appeared perfect from the outside.
But inside this mansion?
They locked children away.
They erased names.
They buried crimes.
“You used the foundation.””
My father’s face changed.
“Careful.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I finally understand.””
I looked at Victor.
“You’re not here to save Emily.””
Victor said nothing.
“You’re here because Emily is evidence.””
The room went silent.
And that silence told me I was right.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
She was staring at the woman with the tablet.
“Her.””
I followed her gaze.
The woman looked surprised.
“What?””
Emily’s face became pale.
“I know her.””
The woman froze.
Victor turned.
“What did you say?””
Emily pointed.
“She was there.””
The woman’s expression changed.
Immediately.
A tiny reaction.
But I saw it.
“What does she mean?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Emily’s breathing became faster.
“She came with Grandpa.””
The woman slowly lowered the tablet.
“Emily.””
My body went cold.
She knew my daughter’s name.
Not from today.
Before.
“You were there that night.””
The woman looked at my father.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Enough.””
Emily stepped backward.
“She told me to be quiet.””
My eyes locked onto the woman.
“What did you do?””
The woman said nothing.
Victor looked irritated.
“Clara.””
The woman looked at him.
“We need to leave.””
That was when I understood.
They were not here because they just found Emily.
They already knew where she was.
They had always known.
My father had not been hiding Emily from the world.
He had been hiding her from me.
I moved closer to Clara.
“You helped him.””
Her face showed no emotion.
“You don’t understand.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed at Emily.
“She was a child.””
Clara looked away.
That was the first human reaction I saw from her.
Guilt.
But guilt was not enough.
Not anymore.
I lifted my phone slightly.
My father noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“Give me that.””
I smiled.
“No.””
He moved toward me.
Victor immediately stepped in.
“Richard.””
My father stopped.
A strange moment passed.
Because Richard Carter listened.
Not to my mother.
Not to Michael.
To Victor.
That told me Victor was more powerful than my father.
And I wanted to know why.
Then Victor looked at me.
“You need to understand something, Daniel.””
“What?””
“Your daughter is not the only person who disappeared eleven years ago.””
My heart slowed.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor looked toward the hallway.
“The man your daughter saw die…”
He paused.
“Was not the only secret your father buried.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What else?””
Victor’s eyes moved to Emily.
Then back to me.
“The night she vanished…”
The lights flickered.
Again.
Victor lowered his voice.
“Someone else saw everything.””
I felt Emily’s hand tighten around mine.
“Who?””
Victor looked toward my father.
And my father looked terrified.
May you like
Then Victor said:
“Your wife.””
