Chapter 9: The Daughter My Wife Tried To Save
For almost a minute, I couldn’t move.
I read the message again.
Then again.
Each time, the words became more impossible.
*She isn’t just Sarah’s daughter.*
*She is the key to finding the child Sarah lost.*
My daughter.
My Lily.
The child I had raised since birth.
The child whose first steps I recorded.
Whose nightmares I held her through.
Whose tiny hand I held when we buried her mother.
And now someone was telling me there was another child.
Another daughter.
Another secret.
I looked at Michael.
The man who had carried this truth for years.
“Tell me everything.””
My voice didn’t sound like mine.
It sounded empty.
Michael sat down slowly.
“I was hoping we would never get here.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
“Then give me one.””
He looked at the photograph on my phone.
“The baby in that picture was Sarah’s daughter.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Who was the father?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
“Who?””
His eyes met mine.
“You.””
The room went completely silent.
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I stood up.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“You’re saying Sarah had another child with me?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Michael looked down.
“That’s what Sarah was trying to find.””
I felt anger explode through the confusion.
“You knew I had another daughter and you said nothing?””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
“I knew Sarah believed the child was alive.””
My hands shook.
“Alive?””
Michael nodded.
“Her name was Emma.””
I froze.
The room seemed to tilt.
“Emma?””
He nodded slowly.
“Emma Brooks.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
The name echoed in my mind.
Emma Brooks.
The missing child.
The girl Rebecca took.
The girl who sent warnings.
The girl who had been connected to everything.
“You’re telling me Emma was…”
“Yes.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“Your daughter.””
I couldn’t accept it.
Not because I didn’t believe Michael.
Because my mind couldn’t hold the weight of it.
Emma.
The little girl I had been searching for.
The child whose disappearance started exposing Rebecca.
She wasn’t just evidence.
She was family.
She was my daughter.
“How?””
I whispered.
“How did I not know?””
Michael looked away.
“Because Sarah was terrified.””
“Terrified of what?””
“Losing both children.””
I closed my eyes.
“Explain.””
Michael took a breath.
“When Emma was born, there were complications.””
“Sarah never told me she was pregnant.””
“I know.””
My heart hurt.
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca knew.””
That name again.
Always Rebecca.
“She knew about Emma?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Michael hesitated.
“Because Sarah told her.””
I looked at him.
“Why would she do that?””
“Because at first, Rebecca was family.””
The word felt bitter.
“She thought Rebecca would help.””
Michael continued.
“Sarah believed she could trust her.””
“And then?””
“Then Rebecca became obsessed.””
“With Emma?””
“Yes.””
I remembered what Thomas said.
She chooses children who remind her of something she lost.
“She wanted my daughter.””
Michael nodded.
“Sarah realized too late.””
“What happened?””
“Rebecca convinced Sarah that she could help.””
“Help how?””
“She said Sarah was overwhelmed. She said Emma needed a more stable environment.””
I clenched my fists.
“The same thing she did to everyone else.””
“Yes.””
“And Sarah fought her?””
“She tried.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because Rebecca threatened her.””
“With what?””
“With Lily.””
The answer hit harder than anything.
“Rebecca said if Sarah went public, she would make sure neither child stayed with her.””
I looked down.
“She used the system.””
“Yes.””
“And Sarah?””
“Sarah hid Lily with you.””
My eyes burned.
“And Emma?””
Michael’s face changed.
“Rebecca took her.””
The next hour felt like drowning.
Every piece of the puzzle finally connected.
Emma.
The missing records.
The symbol.
The drawings.
The box.
Sarah’s investigation.
Rebecca wasn’t collecting random children.
She was trying to recreate a family she lost.
Or a family she believed she deserved.
But one question remained.
“If Emma was my daughter…”
I looked at Michael.
“Why did everyone think she was Emma Brooks?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“Because Rebecca changed the records.””
“What?””
“After Emma disappeared, Rebecca manipulated the paperwork.””
“She changed my daughter’s name?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To hide her.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Emma.
This time, the number appeared.
I answered immediately.
“Emma?””
A quiet breath.
“Daniel?””
My heart stopped.
Hearing her voice was different from seeing documents.
Different from reading names.
This was real.
A child.
My child.
“I’m here.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know if you would believe me.””
I closed my eyes.
“I believe you.””
“I wanted to tell you sooner.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Rebecca watches everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Emma.””
“I know.””
Her voice shook.
“But if I tell you, she’ll find me.””
“Then tell me what you need.””
Silence.
Then:
“I need you to find Lily.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca moved her.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Emma sounded frightened.
“You don’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“She isn’t moving Lily because she’s scared of the investigation.””
“Then why?””
A pause.
“She’s moving her because she found the last piece.””
“What piece?””
“The one Sarah hid.””
I looked at Michael.
“What is it?””
Emma whispered:
“Proof of what happened to me.””
Michael and I drove through the night.
Emma had given us one clue.
Not an address.
A place.
A building abandoned five years ago.
A former family services storage center.
A place where old case files were kept before being transferred.
A place Rebecca would never expect us to search.
When we arrived, the building looked empty.
Broken windows.
Rusting doors.
No lights.
But someone had been there recently.
A fresh tire mark cut through the dirt.
Michael noticed it too.
“She’s been here.””
We entered carefully.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Thousands of files.
Children’s names.
Families.
Lives reduced to paper.
Then I saw it.
A small drawing taped to one box.
A house.
Four figures holding hands.
My breath caught.
“Emma.””
I opened the box.
Inside was a folder.
Sarah’s handwriting.
My hands shook.
She had found it.
The truth.
Inside were photographs.
Not just of Emma.
Of Rebecca.
With children.
Different children.
Always the same pattern.
Always the same smile.
Always the same promise.
Then I found the final document.
A confession.
Not signed.
But written in Rebecca’s handwriting.
My eyes moved across the page.
*I know what people think of me. They think I take children.*
*They don’t understand.*
*I save what others abandon.*
I kept reading.
My blood ran cold.
*Emma was the first.*
*Lily will be the last.*
Michael looked over my shoulder.
“Daniel.””
I read the final line.
*Once Lily knows the truth about Sarah, she will choose me.*
A noise came from behind us.
We turned.
Rebecca stood in the doorway.
Holding a phone.
And smiling.
“You finally found it.””
I stepped forward.
“You knew we would.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at the folder.
“Because Sarah always believed the truth would save her.””
Rebecca walked inside.
“But she never understood something.””
“What?””
Her smile faded.
“The truth only matters if people believe it.””
I held up the document.
“They will.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No, Daniel.””
She looked at me.
“They won’t.””
Then she pressed a button on her phone.
A video started playing.
My blood froze.
It was Lily.
Sitting in a room.
Crying.
And someone was standing beside her.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who should have been helping us.
Someone who had been searching for the truth with me.
Michael whispered:
“No…”
Because on the screen, Lily looked up and said:
May you like
“Daddy…”
“Why did you let Uncle Michael take me away?””
