Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Standing Behind My Wife
I watched the video again.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Every single time, the same thing happened.
The same moment.
The same reflection.
The same impossible truth.
Michael standing behind Sarah.
My attorney.
My friend.
The man who had sat beside me through every court hearing.
The man who had promised me he would help get Lily back.
The man who had warned me not to trust anyone.
My hands moved away from the keyboard.
The room felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing in.
“No.””
The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.
Michael didn’t move.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t shout.
That scared me more than anything.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
His face was pale.
“Let me explain.””
I stood up slowly.
“You were there.””
“Daniel—”
“You were in my house.””
“Listen to me.””
“You were behind my wife.””
My voice grew louder.
“You knew.””
Michael closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“I knew something.””
The answer made my stomach drop.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the screen.
“At the time, I didn’t know how bad it was.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael looked down.
“Because Sarah called me.””
Silence.
I stared at him.
“Why would Sarah call you?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because she thought she was running out of time.””
Three years earlier.
Before Lily was taken.
Before the fake documents.
Before the courtroom doors closed in my face.
Sarah had contacted Michael.
Not as my attorney.
Not as my friend.
As someone she thought could help protect our daughter.
“I was working late that night,” Michael said.
“Sarah called me.””
“What did she say?””
“She said she had evidence.””
I watched him carefully.
“What evidence?””
“That Rebecca was manipulating custody cases.””
I shook my head.
“So you knew.””
“I knew she suspected something.””
“You helped her?””
“I tried.””
My anger rose.
“Tried?””
Michael looked at me.
“Daniel, you need to understand something. Sarah didn’t trust anyone.””
“She didn’t trust you?””
“She trusted me enough to ask for help.””
I looked back at the video.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Because Sarah asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She said if Rebecca realized you knew, she would change her strategy.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you kept secrets from me?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“You let me believe I was crazy.””
“I never did that.””
“You let me walk into court blind.””
Michael looked away.
“I thought I could protect both of you.””
“And could you?””
He had no answer.
I wanted to hate him.
I needed to hate him.
Because anger was easier than accepting the possibility that the man who helped me fight for my daughter had been trying to help all along.
But then I remembered something.
Something Rebecca said.
She wanted me angry.
She wanted me to make mistakes.
Everyone around me had been manipulating information.
The question was no longer:
Who was lying?
The question was:
Who benefited from my believing the wrong person?
I sat down.
“Tell me everything.””
Michael looked surprised.
“What?””
“Everything you didn’t tell me.””
He slowly pulled out a chair.
Then he began.
The night Sarah died, Michael had been at the hospital.
Not because he was my attorney.
Because Sarah called him there.
“She was scared,” he said.
“She knew she was sick.””
I looked down.
“She told me she had found something.””
“What?””
“A connection.””
“Between what?””
“Rebecca and someone inside the child welfare system.””
I remembered the hidden note.
Marissa.
The reports.
The signatures.
Michael continued.
“She believed Rebecca wasn’t working alone.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who?””
“She didn’t know.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t have proof.””
I stared at him.
“You had years.””
“Yes.””
“Years.””
My voice cracked.
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to find proof.””
“By yourself?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You should have trusted me.””
Michael looked at me.
“Sarah didn’t want you involved.””
“Why?””
His eyes softened.
“Because she knew you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew you would burn everything down to protect Lily.””
I looked away.
Because he was right.
That was exactly what I wanted to do.
Michael continued.
“And she knew Rebecca wanted that.””
A knock interrupted us.
Both of us froze.
It was almost midnight.
Nobody should have been there.
Michael stood.
“Stay here.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything, you think I’m staying behind?””
We moved together.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Michael opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only an envelope on the floor.
My name was written on it.
Daniel.
I picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
My heart stopped.
It was Lily.
Not from Rebecca’s house.
From somewhere else.
She was sitting at a table.
Holding a piece of paper.
Her eyes were red.
She looked like she had been crying.
On the back of the photograph was a message.
*She found Sarah’s video.*
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“Who?””
I turned the photograph around.
The message continued.
*Rebecca knows the truth is coming out. She is moving Lily tonight.*
I immediately grabbed my phone.
“No.””
Michael stopped me.
“Daniel.””
“She’s moving my daughter.””
“We don’t know if it’s real.””
I looked at him.
“After everything?””
He had no answer.
I called the family services emergency line.
No answer.
I called Marissa.
Straight to voicemail.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
A small voice whispered:
“Daddy?””
My entire body froze.
“Lily?””
“Don’t talk loud.””
I covered my mouth.
“Where are you?””
“I don’t know.””
“Are you safe?””
Silence.
Then:
“Rebecca found the box.””
My heart stopped.
“What box?””
“The one Mommy hid.””
I looked at Michael.
“What did she do?””
Lily started crying.
“She got angry.””
“What happened?””
“She said Mommy ruined everything.””
My hands shook.
“Lily, listen to me. You need to tell me where you are.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca said if I tell you, she’ll send me away forever.””
I closed my eyes.
“She’s lying.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Because Emma told me.””
I stopped breathing.
“Emma is with you?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know Emma?””
“Because Rebecca talks about her.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What does she say?””
Lily whispered:
“She says Emma was the one child who got away.””
Michael looked at me.
My heart pounded.
“Lily, where are you?””
“I don’t know.””
“Look around.””
I heard her breathing.
“I see boxes.””
“Anything else?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daddy…”
“What?””
“There’s a picture.””
“Of what?””
“Me.””
I froze.
“A picture of you?””
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“A picture of Mommy.””
The room went silent.
“What kind of picture?””
“She’s holding a baby.””
My blood turned cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily, your mother only had one child.””
A long pause.
Then my daughter said:
“No, Daddy.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She’s holding a baby.””
A tremor moved through her voice.
“And Rebecca is standing next to her.””
I looked at Michael.
He looked just as confused.
“Lily, where is that picture?””
“I don’t know.””
“Can you describe the room?””
“I already told you.””
“Look again.””
Silence.
Then:
“There’s a door.””
“What color?””
“White.””
“Anything written on it?””
A pause.
Then Lily whispered:
“Yes.””
“What does it say?””
Her voice shook.
“It says…”
I waited.
My entire body tense.
“It says…”
The line suddenly cut.
“Lily?””
Nothing.
“Lily!””
A message appeared.
Not from Lily.
From Rebecca.
A single photograph.
I opened it.
My blood froze.
It was a picture of me and Michael standing outside the archive.
Taken minutes earlier.
Underneath it:
*You’re looking for answers in the wrong place.*
Then another message arrived.
*Ask your lawyer why Sarah never told you about the other child.*
I stared at the screen.
The words wouldn’t make sense.
Other child.
Other child.
Michael slowly stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face had lost all color.
“I know what picture Lily saw.””
My heart stopped.
“How?””
He swallowed.
“Because I’ve seen it before.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
Michael looked at the photograph on my phone.
Then whispered:
“The night Sarah died.””
I stepped back.
“What are you saying?””
Michael closed his eyes.
Then said the words that shattered everything I believed about my own family.
“Daniel…”
“Lily wasn’t your wife’s only secret.””
I stared at him.
“What secret?””
His voice barely came out.
“Sarah had another daughter.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“I wish it was.””
Then my phone buzzed again.
A final message.
From Rebecca.
*Now you know why I chose Lily.*
May you like
*She isn’t just Sarah’s daughter.*
*She is the key to finding the child Sarah lost.*
