Chapter 5 - The Family Nobody Could Divide

Two days later, Noah refused to put on his soccer cleats.
Alexa found him sitting on his bedroom floor with one shoe beside him.
"Practice starts in twenty minutes," she said softly.
"I don't want to go."
She sat beside him.
"Want to tell me why?"
Noah picked at the loose end of a shoelace.
"Because Daddy Julian might not come."
"He's still in the hospital, baby. You know that."
"I know."
"And Terrence is at Uncle David's."
Noah nodded.
Then he whispered, "Who am I supposed to look for when I score?"
Alexa's heart tightened.
She pulled him into her arms.
"You don't have to score for anybody today."
He rested his forehead against her shoulder.
"Do you still love Terrence?"
"Yes."
"Does Terrence still love me?"
Alexa paused.
"He's told me he does. And I believe him."
"Then why did he leave?"
She chose her words carefully.
"Because the grown-ups are having a problem we need to work through. That problem belongs to us. Not you."
Noah stared at his sneakers.
"Is it because I have two dads?"
Alexa shook her head.
"No, baby. It's because sometimes adults don't handle their feelings the way they should."
He considered that.
Then he asked, "Can I still love both of them?"
Alexa held him tighter.
"Always."
Later that afternoon, Renee called with news from the hospital.
Julian's doctors had identified a heart-rhythm problem that likely explained his collapse. He was responding to treatment and would need follow-up testing, medication guidance, and restrictions on strenuous work until the cardiologist cleared him.
He was expected to leave the hospital soon if his monitoring remained reassuring.
For Alexa, the relief was enormous.
But Julian's medical emergency had exposed another problem they could no longer ignore.
The next day, with Renee beside him, Julian called Alexa.
"I updated my emergency contacts," he said.
"Good."
"Renee's first. My friend Curtis is second. He's close to work and knows what's going on."
Alexa smiled faintly.
"That sounds like an actual plan."
"I should've done it a long time ago."
"Yeah."
He hesitated.
"I also talked to my supervisor. I'm not going back until the doctors say I can."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Julian was quiet for a moment.
"How's Noah doing?"
"Scared."
"Because of me?"
"Because of everything."
Julian sighed.
"I want to talk to him when you think he's ready."
"You can call tonight."
Before hanging up, Julian said something unexpected.
"Alexa, tell Terrence I'm grateful for what he's done for Noah. I know I haven't said that enough."
She looked toward the empty space where Terrence usually left his work boots.
"I think he'd appreciate hearing it from you."
That evening, Terrence returned to collect more clothes.
Noah was downstairs watching television when the door opened.
He immediately stood.
"Terrence?"
"Hey, buddy."
Noah walked toward him, then stopped.
"Are you staying?"
Terrence glanced at Alexa.
"Your mom and I need to talk."
Noah's face fell.
"That means no."
Terrence crouched to his level.
"That means we're trying to figure some things out."
Noah studied him.
"Are you mad because Mommy went to help my dad?"
Terrence looked uncomfortable.
"That's grown-up business."
"But I heard you."
The room went silent.
Noah continued.
"You said she couldn't come back if she went."
Alexa felt tears prick her eyes.
Terrence slowly lowered his gaze.
"I did say that."
"Why?"
No adult answered immediately.
Noah's voice became smaller.
"If Daddy Julian had died, would you have wanted Mommy to leave him there?"
Terrence looked as though the question had physically struck him.
"No," he said finally.
"Then why were you so mad?"
Terrence opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Alexa stepped forward.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to solve this."
"I know."
Noah's eyes filled.
"But I don't want Terrence to stop being my family just because Daddy Julian is still my dad."
Terrence covered his mouth with one hand.
For three years, he had worried that Julian's presence made his own role less important.
He had never considered that Noah saw the situation differently.
To Noah, loving Julian didn't take anything away from Terrence.
Both relationships mattered because both men mattered.
Alexa looked at her husband.
"I'm willing to work on our marriage," she said quietly. "I'm willing to create healthier boundaries with Julian. I'm willing to listen when you feel hurt."
She held his gaze.
"But I am not willing to raise Noah in a home where loving one person means he's required to reject another."
Terrence nodded, his eyes wet.
Alexa continued.
"You have to decide whether you can be part of a family that includes Noah's father, even when that's uncomfortable."
Terrence looked at the boy standing between them.
Then he set his bag down.
"Noah," he said, his voice trembling, "there's something I need to tell you about that night."
May you like
Alexa stood still.
She had no idea whether her husband was about to save their family or finally admit that he couldn't remain in it.
