Chapter 3 - The Name He Never Removed

Julian looked smaller in the hospital bed.

Alexa had known him for more than a decade.

She remembered him as the loudest person at family cookouts, the man who danced badly at weddings, the father who could turn a grocery-store trip into an adventure for a five-year-old.

Now he lay beneath a white hospital blanket, an IV line taped to his hand.

His eyes opened when she approached.

"Alexa?"

"Hey."

He looked toward the clock.

"What time is it?"

"Almost two."

He frowned.

"In the morning?"

"Yes."

Julian closed his eyes.

"Man."

Alexa pulled a chair beside the bed.

"You scared everybody."

"I didn't mean to."

"Renee told me you've been having dizzy spells."

He turned his head.

"She talks too much."

"Julian."

He looked back at her.

The weak smile disappeared.

"I've been having these episodes for a few weeks," he admitted. "My heart starts pounding. Sometimes I feel lightheaded. I figured it was stress."

"And you didn't see a doctor?"

"I kept putting it off."

"Why?"

Julian stared at the ceiling.

"They were considering me for a day-shift opening. Better hours. More weekends free."

Alexa understood immediately.

"For Noah."

He nodded.

"I was tired of being the father who missed everything."

The words softened her anger but did not erase it.

"Getting yourself killed trying to prove you're a better father doesn't help him."

"I know that now."

He rubbed his eyes.

"I remember being at work. Everything went blurry. Somebody asked if I was okay. Next thing I knew, I was here."

Alexa looked at the monitor beside him.

"The doctors are still figuring out what happened. You need to take this seriously."

"I will."

He hesitated.

"How did you know to come?"

"Your job's clinic called me. Apparently, I'm still listed as your emergency contact."

Julian looked embarrassed.

"I never changed it."

"Why not?"

He took a slow breath.

"Because every time something went wrong when we were married, you were the person who answered."

Alexa looked down.

Their divorce hadn't happened because they stopped caring whether the other person lived.

It happened because too many responsibilities had fallen on one person, until love began to feel like constant exhaustion.

"You can't keep depending on me that way," she said gently.

"I know."

"You have Renee. You have friends. You need a real plan."

He nodded.

Then he noticed her bare left hand.

"Where's your ring?"

Alexa looked at her fingers.

She had removed it earlier while washing dishes and forgotten to put it back on before the call.

"It's at home."

Julian watched her expression.

"Did Terrence get upset about you coming?"

She didn't answer.

Julian sighed.

"Alexa."

"He told me if I came here, I shouldn't come home."

Julian stared at her.

"For coming to a hospital?"

"He thinks I'm choosing you over him."

A painful silence followed.

"I didn't call you myself," Julian said.

"I know."

"I wouldn't have asked you to risk your marriage for me."

"This isn't about what you asked."

Alexa leaned forward.

"It's about Noah. He heard us fighting. He thinks helping you might cost him Terrence."

Julian's face changed.

"Aw, hell."

"He loves both of you. And somehow the adults in his life keep making that feel complicated."

Julian looked away.

For years, the two men had existed in separate compartments of Noah's life.

Julian was his father.

Terrence was the man who helped raise him.

Neither had wanted to acknowledge how much the other mattered.

"I used to hate hearing him talk about Terrence," Julian admitted.

Alexa looked up.

"Why?"

"Because he'd tell me Terrence taught him something, or took him somewhere, and all I could think was that another man was doing things I should've done."

He swallowed.

"But Noah wasn't trying to hurt me. He was just telling me about somebody who showed up."

Alexa felt tears gather.

Julian continued quietly.

"I finally realized he wasn't asking me to be jealous. He was asking me to be there too."

A knock sounded.

Renee entered carrying a purse and a half-buttoned cardigan.

She hurried to Julian's bedside.

"Don't you ever scare me like this again."

He managed a tired smile.

"No promises about being annoying."

She touched his forehead and began asking the questions Alexa had been too frightened to ask.

As the siblings spoke, Alexa recognized that she no longer needed to remain at Julian's bedside.

He had family there.

He had medical professionals caring for him.

And she had a son waiting at home.

Before she left, Julian reached for her hand.

"Thank you for coming."

Alexa squeezed his fingers briefly.

"Get better. Noah needs you."

Outside, she found another message from Terrence.

He asked whether you were coming home.

I told him I didn't know.

Alexa read it twice.

Then she wrote:

You should have told him the truth. I'm his mother. I am coming home.

She slipped the phone into her coat pocket.

Until that moment, Alexa had been afraid of losing her marriage.

But driving toward home, she realized something more important.

May you like

She could not allow her son to grow up believing that love was something adults could withdraw whenever they felt threatened.

And this time, she would not remain silent just to keep the peace.
