Chapter 4: The Locked Drawer
Daniel spent the night in a holding cell.
He had never been arrested before.
Never been handcuffed.
Never heard the metal door close behind him.
He sat on the narrow bench and stared at his hands.
Every few minutes, Noah's words returned.
I'm scared of you too.
By morning, Daniel no longer felt angry.
He felt ashamed.
Not because he had protected Noah.
He would never regret stepping between his son and Vanessa.
He regretted becoming something terrifying while doing it.
His attorney, Malcolm Brooks, arrived shortly after nine.
They had known each other since college.
Malcolm sat opposite him in the interview room.
"I saw the video.""
Daniel looked up.
"How?""
"Police have it.""
Malcolm removed his glasses.
"It helps you.""
Daniel almost laughed.
"I'm in jail.""
"Temporarily.""
"I hit my wife.""
"After walking in on her physically abusing your nine-year-old son.""
"I kicked her.""
"Yes.""
"I shoved Vivian.""
"She was recording child abuse and lying about it.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't make me sound better than I was.""
Malcolm went silent.
Daniel looked down.
"I lost control.""
"Then we'll say that.""
Daniel looked at him.
Malcolm leaned forward.
"You don't need me to turn you into a hero. You need me to keep the facts intact.""
He tapped the table.
"The facts are that Vanessa abused Noah. You witnessed it. You intervened.
Your intervention became excessive. Those facts can coexist.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
That was almost exactly what he had told Noah.
Malcolm continued.
"There's another issue.""
"What?""
"Renee called me.""
Daniel straightened.
"Noah?""
"He's safe.""
Daniel exhaled.
"But apparently he told her this wasn't the first incident.""
Daniel's body tightened.
"What did he say?""
"Not much. He shuts down whenever Vanessa comes up.""
Daniel looked away.
Malcolm lowered his voice.
"We need evidence.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"There is evidence. His neck.""
"For yesterday. If this has been happening for months, we need more.""
Daniel thought.
Vanessa handled most of the household scheduling.
She had access to school messages.
Medical records.
Security systems.
Daniel had trusted her.
Then something occurred to him.
"The cameras.""
Malcolm frowned.
"What cameras?""
"We have security cameras outside.""
"Do they cover the patio?""
Daniel nodded.
"Partially.""
"Cloud storage?""
"I don't know. Vanessa manages the account.""
Malcolm leaned back.
"Then we need to preserve it before anything gets deleted.""
By afternoon, Daniel was released pending further proceedings with strict instructions not to contact Vanessa directly.
He went straight to Renee's house.
Noah was asleep upstairs.
Renee met him at the kitchen table.
She looked exhausted.
"You look terrible," she said.
"Thank you.""
Normally she would have laughed.
She didn't.
Daniel sat down.
"Tell me.""
Renee stared at him for several seconds.
"He wet the bed last night.""
Daniel looked stunned.
"He hasn't done that since he was five.""
"I know.""
She folded her hands.
"He kept asking whether Vanessa knew where he was.""
Daniel felt sick.
"What else?""
"He said she sometimes locked him in the laundry room.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Renee's voice hardened.
"Daniel.""
"I didn't know.""
"How didn't you know?""
The question hurt because he had been asking himself the same thing.
"I don't know.""
"You live there.""
"I know.""
"You're his father.""
"I know!""
The words came out louder than Daniel intended.
Renee flinched.
Daniel immediately lowered his voice.
"Sorry.""
He covered his face.
"I'm sorry.""
Renee watched him.
After a moment, she reached across the table.
"You need help too.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Noah needs me.""
"Yes. And right now Noah needs a father who can walk into hell without becoming part of it.""
Daniel stared at her.
The words landed deeply.
He nodded.
That evening Malcolm obtained permission for Daniel to retrieve essential belongings from the house while Vanessa was absent.
An officer accompanied him.
The house felt unfamiliar.
Every room contained evidence of the life Daniel thought he had.
Wedding pictures.
Vacations.
Birthday decorations.
He entered Noah's bedroom.
The room was neat.
Too neat.
Daniel opened the closet.
Soccer cleats.
School uniforms.
Books.
Then he noticed scratches near the bottom of the closet door.
Short lines.
Dozens of them.
Daniel crouched.
They looked almost like tally marks.
"What are those?"" the officer asked.
Daniel didn't answer.
He opened Noah's desk.
Nothing unusual.
Then he tried the bottom drawer.
Locked.
Daniel frowned.
Noah never locked anything.
He found a tiny key taped beneath the desk.
The drawer opened.
Inside was a spiral notebook.
Daniel recognized Noah's handwriting.
At first, the pages contained drawings.
Superheroes.
Cars.
A picture of Daniel and Noah standing beneath a giant sun.
Then the drawings changed.
Vanessa appeared with an angry face.
One picture showed Noah inside a small square.
Another showed a plate of food on one side of a door and Noah on the other.
Then Daniel turned a page and stopped.
There was a drawing of a dog collar.
Below it Noah had written:
*She said next time she would make me wear it outside so everyone could see what I am.*
Daniel's vision blurred.
The officer quietly said, "Don't touch anything else.""
Daniel stood.
His legs felt weak.
Then something slid from between two pages.
A photograph.
Daniel picked it up by the edge.
It showed Noah standing in the laundry room.
His hands were behind his back.
His face was wet with tears.
On the back, in Vanessa's handwriting, were four words:
*Maybe now he'll learn.*
Daniel stared at it.
His grief changed shape.
For months, he had been asking himself what kind of monster Vanessa was.
May you like
Now another question emerged.
How many times had his son been waiting for him to notice?
