Chapter 1: The Collar

Daniel Carter knew something was wrong before he saw his son.

It was the laughter.

He had just stepped through the glass doors leading from the kitchen to the backyard when a woman's laugh floated across the patio—sharp, delighted, cruel in a way that made his stomach tighten.

Daniel stopped.

For half a second, his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.

His nine-year-old son, Noah, stood beside the outdoor dining table with his shoulders hunched and his chin pressed toward his chest.

Vanessa had both hands around his neck.

No.

Not around his neck.

Around a black leather dog collar.

Silver spikes circled the outside.

Daniel's briefcase slipped from his fingers.

Vanessa pulled the strap tighter.

Noah clawed desperately at it.

"Stop," the boy whimpered.

"It's hurting me.""

Vanessa slapped his hands away.

Beside her, Vivian—Vanessa's older sister—held up her phone and recorded everything.

She was laughing.

Actually laughing.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

He had left the house that morning believing Noah would spend the afternoon doing homework before his soccer practice. Vanessa had texted him two hours earlier saying everything was fine.

Everything was not fine.

"If you don't know how to listen," Vanessa said, leaning toward Noah's face, "I'll treat you like a dog.""

The buckle clicked shut.

Something inside Daniel broke.

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SON!""

Three heads turned.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"D-Daniel—"

He was already moving.

He crossed the patio before he even remembered crossing it.

His only clear image was Noah's terrified face.

Daniel reached Vanessa and struck her hard enough to send her stumbling sideways into the buffet table.

The table collapsed beneath her.

A vase tipped over.

White flowers scattered across the stone patio.

Platters of fruit and food crashed to the ground as Vanessa fell among them, her expensive green dress smeared with sauce and frosting.

Vivian screamed.

Daniel grabbed Noah and pulled him behind his body.

"Are you okay?""

Noah couldn't answer.

He kept touching the collar.

His breathing came in short, panicked bursts.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

"What the hell is wrong with you?""

Vanessa sat up.

Shock covered her face.

Then rage replaced it.

"You hit me!""

"You put a dog collar on my child!""

"It was a joke!""

"A joke?""

Daniel's voice shook.

He looked at Noah.

There were tears running down the boy's cheeks.

"Does he look like he's laughing?""

Vivian stepped forward with her phone still raised.

"Oh, please, Daniel. Stop acting like somebody tried to kill him.""

Daniel turned.

Vivian gave him the same mocking smile she used whenever she thought someone was being too sensitive.

"You've always spoiled that boy," she said.

"Vanessa was teaching him some discipline.""

"Put the phone down.""

Vivian smirked.

"Or what?""

Daniel reached for her wrist and forced the phone downward.

Vivian jerked away.

"Don't touch me!""

She stumbled backward into a narrow shelf displaying framed family photographs.

The first frame fell.

Then another.

Then all of them.

Glass shattered across the patio.

Daniel stared at the pictures scattered near his shoes.

His wedding photograph.

Noah's kindergarten picture.

A Christmas portrait of the three of them smiling beneath matching red sweaters.

For one strange second, Daniel saw his entire family lying broken on the ground.

Then Vanessa screamed.

"You think you can put your hands on me?""

She charged toward him and slapped him across the face.

Daniel staggered half a step.

Noah gasped behind him.

Vanessa tried to move around Daniel.

Toward Noah.

Daniel blocked her.

"Don't go near him.""

"Move!""

"No.""

"This is my house too!""

"And that's my son.""

Vanessa lunged again.

Daniel reacted.

His foot struck her hard enough to send her backward into a row of patio chairs.

Metal clattered against metal.

Vanessa collapsed among them.

Then everything became silent.

Daniel stood frozen.

His chest rose and fell.

His hands shook.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at Vivian.

Then at Noah.

The fury that had carried him across the patio disappeared as suddenly as it had arrived.

He turned immediately.

"Noah.""

His son flinched.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

He knelt slowly.

"It's okay. Daddy's here.""

Noah's lips trembled.

Daniel forced himself to move gently.

He found the buckle beneath the boy's chin and loosened it.

The collar fell open.

A red mark circled Noah's neck.

Daniel felt sick.

He removed the collar completely and tossed it onto the patio.

Then he opened his arms.

For one moment, Noah allowed himself to be pulled forward.

Daniel held him tightly.

"I got you," he whispered.

Noah began crying harder.

"I'm sorry," Daniel said.

"I'm so sorry.""

Then Noah pushed against his chest.

Not violently.

Just enough to separate them.

Daniel looked at him.

Noah stared past his father toward Vanessa lying among the fallen chairs.

Then toward Vivian clutching her wrist.

Then down at Daniel's hands.

The same hands that had just struck two people.

Noah stepped backward.

"Dad…"

Daniel reached toward him.

Noah moved farther away.

His voice cracked.

"Now I'm scared of you too.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

His hand remained suspended between them.

The dog collar dropped from the edge of the table and landed on the stone with a soft slap.

Behind Daniel, Vanessa slowly raised her head.

She looked at Noah.

Then at her husband.

A strange smile spread across her face.

Not happiness.

Opportunity.

Daniel saw it.

And in that terrible moment, he understood something worse than rage.

Vanessa knew exactly what Noah's words had done.

She had hurt his son.

Daniel had tried to protect him.

But somehow, she had found a way to make Daniel look like the monster too.

May you like

And Noah was standing between them.

Terrified of both.
