Chapter 3: The Video

Two police officers entered through the front door.

Daniel kept his hands visible.

Vanessa began crying before they had even finished introducing themselves.

The transformation was astonishing.

Five minutes earlier she had been standing in the living room calm and defiant.

Now her voice trembled.

"My husband attacked me.""

Officer Matthews, the older of the two officers, looked at Daniel.

"Sir, stay where you are.""

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa pointed toward her sister.

"He attacked Vivian too.""

Vivian lifted her wrist.

A faint red mark was visible.

Daniel said nothing.

The younger officer stepped toward him.

"Do you have any weapons?""

"No.""

"Were you drinking?""

"No.""

"Did you strike your wife?""

Daniel could have lied.

Instead he said, "Yes.""

Vanessa sobbed louder.

Officer Matthews' expression hardened.

"And did you kick her?""

"Yes.""

"Daniel!"" Renee shouted from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Daniel's sister stood there with her purse still hanging from one shoulder.

Her eyes moved from the officers to Vanessa.

Then she saw Noah.

The boy had come halfway down the stairs.

Renee's face changed.

She climbed the steps.

"Baby, what happened to your neck?""

Noah covered the mark with his hand.

Vanessa answered quickly.

"He was playing with a collar.""

Daniel looked at her.

Officer Matthews noticed.

"What collar?""

Daniel pointed through the glass doors.

"On the patio.""

The officer walked outside.

A moment later he returned wearing gloves and carrying the black leather collar.

"That?""

Noah froze.

Renee wrapped an arm around him.

Officer Matthews looked at Vanessa.

"Why was this around the child's neck?""

Vanessa inhaled.

"It wasn't tight.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

"It was just discipline.""

Daniel felt Renee stiffen beside Noah.

"Discipline?"" she repeated.

Vanessa looked irritated.

"He has behavioral issues.""

"My nephew has never had behavioral issues.""

"You don't live here.""

"Neither are you going to after today.""

"Ma'am," the younger officer warned.

Renee pressed her lips together.

Officer Matthews turned to Noah.

"Can I ask you a question, buddy?""

Noah looked at Daniel first.

That glance broke his father's heart.

Not because Noah was asking permission.

Because Daniel could see fear mixed with trust.

Confusion where certainty used to be.

Daniel nodded gently.

"You can tell him the truth.""

Noah whispered, "She put it on me.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"Because he—"

"Ma'am.""

The officer's tone shut her down.

"Did you want her to put it on you?"" he asked Noah.

"No.""

"Did you ask her to stop?""

Noah nodded.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Every word felt like a knife.

Officer Matthews looked at Vivian.

"You were recording?""

Vivian's posture changed.

"I recorded what happened afterward.""

Daniel raised his head.

"She recorded before.""

"No, I didn't.""

"You were filming Vanessa putting the collar on him.""

Vivian unlocked her phone.

"I can show you.""

Vanessa looked sharply at her.

Too sharply.

Daniel saw it.

So did Officer Matthews.

Vivian opened the video.

For the next thirty seconds, nobody spoke.

The footage began with Vanessa facing Noah.

The camera angle showed the boy clearly.

It also captured Vivian's voice laughing.

Vanessa said, "If you don't know how to listen, I'll treat you like a dog.""

Noah said, "Stop.""

Vanessa tightened the collar.

Then Daniel's shout exploded from the recording.

Everything after that became chaos.

Daniel watched himself attack Vanessa.

Watching it from outside his own body was horrifying.

The rage on his face.

The speed.

No hesitation.

He understood why Noah had been frightened.

But the video also showed why it happened.

Officer Matthews watched until the end.

Then he replayed the beginning.

Vivian's face went pale.

"You said you didn't record before the assault," he said.

"I forgot.""

"You forgot the first thirty seconds of the video?""

"It happened fast.""

Matthews handed the phone back.

"I'll need that video preserved.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"You're not seriously blaming me.""

"I'm investigating what happened.""

"He attacked me!""

"And we're dealing with that.""

She pointed toward Daniel.

"He could've killed me!""

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time since the officers arrived, he spoke directly to Vanessa.

"I shouldn't have hit you.""

Everyone looked at him.

Vanessa seemed almost disappointed.

Daniel continued.

"I should have called the police.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Oh, now you're a saint?""

"No.""

His eyes moved toward Noah.

"No. That's the problem.""

He swallowed.

"I let my anger decide what happened next.""

Noah listened.

Daniel looked back at Vanessa.

"But none of that changes what you did to my son.""

Officer Matthews separated the adults.

Daniel was questioned in the kitchen.

Vanessa and Vivian remained in the living room.

Renee stayed with Noah.

Almost an hour passed.

Finally, Officer Matthews returned.

"We're going to need statements from everyone. Child services will also be contacted.""

Daniel nodded.

"Can Noah leave with my sister?""

"We'll discuss placement.""

The word placement made Daniel's stomach twist.

"This is his home.""

"For tonight, sir, we're concerned about his immediate environment.""

Daniel understood.

Both adults involved in violence lived here.

He rubbed his face.

"Let him go with Renee.""

Renee looked at him.

"Daniel—"

"Please.""

She understood.

Noah needed somewhere quiet.

Somewhere nobody was screaming.

Noah came toward his father before leaving.

Daniel didn't reach for him.

Noah stopped several feet away.

"Are you coming?""

"Not tonight.""

Noah's eyes filled.

Daniel crouched carefully.

"You'll be with Aunt Renee.""

"But—"

"You'll be safe.""

Noah stared at him.

"Are you mad at me?""

Daniel's face crumpled.

"No.""

"Because I said I was scared?""

"No, baby.""

Daniel's voice broke.

"No.""

He looked directly into his son's eyes.

"You were telling me how you felt. You never have to apologize for that.""

Noah began crying.

Daniel nearly reached for him.

Then stopped.

Noah noticed.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Noah stepped forward himself.

He wrapped his arms around Daniel's neck.

Daniel held him carefully.

Not tightly.

Not desperately.

Just enough.

When Noah left with Renee, Daniel watched from the doorway.

Then Officer Matthews approached him.

"Sir.""

Daniel turned.

"We need you to come with us.""

Vanessa stood behind the officer.

Her eyes met Daniel's.

There it was again.

That faint, satisfied smile.

May you like

Daniel understood exactly what she believed.

She believed she had won.
